Good way to combat depression and anxiety?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 09:28 AM PST

I'm asking for myself, as its something I've been dealing with for almost 6 years now and I'm at a point where I'm ready to be accepting and open to ways in which I can heal and was wondering if yoga is a good stepping stone towards that.

    Too old for YTT?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 09:35 AM PST

I started a regular practice just over a year ago and fell quickly in love with it. I now get on the mat every day (although honestly sometimes it's only for 20 mins) and have undertaken a short 'foundations' teacher training course (2 days, face-to-face) and am currently also doing an online 'history of yoga' course. I feel as if yoga has become an incredibly important part of my life and I'd like to learn more and eventually teach. I've found a YTT which is 300 hours over 18 months and focuses on pre-natal and postnatal yoga, which is my specific area of interest as I work in women's health for my day job. I also already teach practical / physical skills to small groups in my job so I think I would be ok with teaching class and the practicalities of cueing, sequencing etc.

Thing is...I'm late-40s, I don't have much / any strength, can't do inversions, fall out of my standing balances most days. I do have decent flexibility but I still feel everyday like a complete beginner, really. If I was younger I'd spend another 10 years practising and then maybe seek out a YTT, but I feel as if the clock is ticking and I really want to do this now!

Is this just a mid-life crisis? What would you think of a 40-something teacher who couldn't even get into crow, let alone hold it?!

    Tips for a beginner

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 01:02 PM PST

I tried to try out yoga again but after the first 8 minutes I decided to stop since my feet and inner thighs were killing me, I couldn't sit straight and relax.

I also could not lift my arms all the way up because I have rounded shoulders and was not able to fully replicate the moves.

Should I just go through it next time? Or work on my posture?

Also what is the best yoga for spirituality?

    Thank you.

Can y'all do the ashtanga yoga primary series?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 04:21 PM PST

Here is the video for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hW9mu7rEfQ4

This is by far the hardest yoga sequence I've done. I sweat like a pig whenever I do it and I can only do like half the poses. Someday I want to be able to do wheel pose like her as well as headstand. I'd also love to be able to go from downward dog to seated fold like she does but I feel like I'd have to be able to handstand to do that. The arm strength of this woman is just incredible. Also I really suck at the pose at 22:24 but I think I need to stretch out my hamstrings in order to get better at that one.

I used to do this class at my university's fitness center but I graduated now and it's closed anyway :/ The teachers were really good and would give pointers and adjustments but now I'm just doing this on my own with the video whenever I get a chance. I have made a lot of progress since when I first started doing it so I know change is possible.

Help identifying phrase at end of practice

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 01:32 PM PST

Ive heard a phrase that sounds something like "adiome tatzat" at the end of some yoga nidra practices does anyone know what this is and/or how the Sanskrit is actually spelled. I can not find anything in the ways I am trying to spell it. Thanks!

My joints are killing me. Any suggestions?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 08:49 AM PST

I have been doing yoga here and there for a few years but got serious right before Covid hit. I practice daily at a studio in a class with like 20+ students, so there's not any one-on-one time or really any "coaching" in terms of how my postures look or if I am holding my weight correctly. I have always assumed I do fine, but just never been sure.

My knees and shoulders are killing me! Just for context, I am 35f, about 108 lbs, 5'4... I am a tiny thing, so this shouldn't be about weight really, right? Could it be that I need to build strength in these areas as well as yoga?

I truly love to practice yoga! It has been great for me but it's been painful lately because of this and I would love some advice. Thank you all so much!

Should i let my hamstrings rest or keep pushing?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 02:31 AM PST

Hi, i've started yoga at the end of April 2020 and i have to date, 160 individual 30 min. sessions, out of which the last 40 sessions were in consecutive days. I'm very proud of my achievement so far, however the main barrier of progress is the hamstrings. I am pushing on the hamstrings as far as i can but below pain levels, as all instructors agree on this. However, this puts me in a position of having constant hamstring muscle fever. I've grown accustomed to it and can leave with it daily.

I'm questioning wether i should take a break for the hamstrings and continue with relaxing stretching sessions across other muscle groups for a while or keep fighting against hamstring dictatorship!

How to keep core engaged while stomach breathing

    Posted: 19 Nov 2020 09:26 PM PST

So I'm having trouble with this. And maybe I'm just not thinking about it right. But how do you keep your core engaged while also stomach breathing? Should I not actually let my stomach relax in any way?

    Thanks!
