Anyone else fold their mat in half before rolling it up?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 02:51 PM PST

I fold my mat over in half (long ways, making the shape closer to a square than a rectangle) before i roll'er up. This means the bottom never contacts the top side; no cross contamination of floor grit and/or cooties. I've never noticed anyone else do this and frankly I'm shocked its not standard practice 😐 ...✌🏽🧘‍♀️

From daily practice to no practice indefinitely-- visualizing the road to recovery after a bad injury

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 02:33 PM PST

Hi folks! Longtime lurker, first time poster.

I've (22F) been practicing yoga daily for 2 years, normally both day and night as a way to start and end my day. However, I recently received news that I fractured my patella and irritated a few ligaments around it, which could mean anywhere from 6 weeks - 6 months of no physical activity, depending on the severity.

My knee is in an immobilizer and I'm set to see an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow to get the full details on my recovery process. I'm heartbroken that I'll no longer get to practice full body yoga daily-- it was a huge mood stabilizer for me, and the ego-driven part of me took great pride in my physical strength/aesthetic. I'm having a lot of trouble reckoning with the fact that yoga, as I once knew it, will not be part of my life until my knee is healthy again.

Yogis, have any of you had to cope with a traumatic injury? How did you balance the desire to heal with the desire to get back on the mat? It's so hard not to feel FOMO and worry about the state of my physical health since I won't be able to practice for a while. Seeking words of wisdom, ideas for how to modify my practice to account for an injured knee, or anything that could be helpful.

    Thank you and take care!

    Forward fold not stretching hamstrings?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 07:15 PM PST

I heard to not bend your back, especially your lower back, and you ll get a much better stretch that way. Now instead of being close to a pancake I'm at a 90 degree angle and have to pull myself down, but with no hamstring stretch. Am I doing this wrong now?? It's very frustrating to me :(

I'm not new to training but I'm relatively new to taking flexibility very seriously

    Beginner Yin Yoga Video Recommendations

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 06:53 PM PST

    Hi /r/yoga!

I've always had terrible flexibility on my lower body, and have had a handful of knee/hamstring sports related injuries. After researching and really trying to determine what practice would be best for me and my needs, I've decided to give Yin Yoga a shot.

I'd love to get your thoughts and advice on a particular video/channel to start with. Any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.

    Poses for muscle knots

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 06:19 PM PST

Hello everyone, I haven't been consistent with yoga since my studio shut down due to COVID (I'm trying to do better). Now, I have a muscle knot at the very top of back. Does anyone have links/pictures to poses and/or practices that could help loosen up the knot? Thank you!

    Never worked out before

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 12:15 PM PST

I'm 33F and have never worked out before. I wonder if yoga is a good way of working out ? I'm looking at building muscle, toning and gaining some strength ( as well as confidence ). I went to a gym before and really didn't like it. Thank you.

    Pet hair and yoga mats

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 09:44 AM PST

I purchased a Jade yoga mat after reading lots of positive reviews about the way it maintains its stickiness in the face of sweat and it is exactly as advertised.

The problem I'm having is how it grips... Everything else. Particularly the hair from my constantly shedding dog. The texture of the mat makes it all but impossible to get clean and it's driving me crazy.

Any cleaning tips or tricks from other Jade mat users? Or recommendations for a mat with a smoother (i.e. easier to wipe down) surface that still provides plenty of 'stick' during sweaty workouts?

Feelings akin to orgasm in certain poses?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 01:21 PM PST

I have noticed that when I do yin yoga sequences, certain postures trigger feelings of almost climaxing sexually. These usually happen in pigeon, where the stretch is in the glute, or in butterfly, where the stretch is in the hips. Does this happen to anyone else and any insight as to what it might mean? I can name the feeling for sure too; it definitely feels like that moment just before orgasm, or the moments leading up to it (not as intense, but it's very similar)

Anybody got a favourite teacher/videos from MyYogaWorks?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 03:40 PM PST

It's going to be my thirds year purchasing the membership from them, and up until now I basically only stuck to one instructor - Vytas. In fact I first purchased themembership because I wanted more of his videos (saw a couple elsewhere and his vibe really appealed to me).

Now thinking maybe I ought to explore a little more, but random attempts at different videos result in me even just turning off the video frequently. Figured I'd ask here if anyone has their favourites :)

FWIW my favourite from Vytas is Strong Back Healthy Back video; I'm following that routine like once a week. It has done wonders for my back health and flexibility.

Should I buy a manduka pro?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 02:38 PM PST

I currently use a cheap $10 yoga mat but I think it's causing my wrist issues. It's very thin (4mm) and has almost no give. I've been doing yoga for around 6 months.

Do you think it will improve my practice?

    Yoga and Spiritual Experience

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 05:39 AM PST

    Good morning,

I have lately been meditating and practicing yoga in a quiet space before everyone in the house is awake. I have experienced the last two times visions of someone laying over me with something in her hand almost like healing and then I start crying but I'm not sad. It's refreshing almost like a release. Has anyone remotely experienced this. I also vision dancing with people almost like spirits or ancestors. It's like I'm at total peace in this sacred space and moment.

I hope this is not too far out there.

    thank you

    Skandasana help

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 08:29 AM PST

Hi guys! I'm curious if anyone here has some tips to help me work my heel towards the ground in skandasana. When I have my butt lowered to my heel I'm still on the ball of my foot and I feel myself starting to hunch in towards my bent leg (balance issue?). Should I work on staying higher in the squat with a flat foot instead and gradually work towards lowering my hips? Are there any helpful modifications I might be missing out on? This pose always looks like it feels SO GOOD in a flow and I'd love to be able to appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hey fellow yogis of reddit, what do you think about inversion tables as a substitute for shirshasana ?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 04:35 AM PST

New lurker here. I'm slightly overweight to do conventional headstands. Do you think its a good idea for me to buy the inversion table? Does anybody here own them? What do you feel about it?

    Can I teach donation classes??

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 08:08 AM PST

I don't have a certification, but would it be wrong to teach yoga via zoom/Instagram lives solely for service to others?? My friend said that this is illegal to do, but if I know the moves, is it really that wrong? It would be solely voluntary as a service to whomever wants to tune in. I feel like I need to contribute something to the world during this time.
