    Leg Hold strength

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 08:00 PM PST

    Hey everyone!

So long story short, I'm an athlete for taekwondo with experience stretching. I have my front splits and I am currently trying to gain the strength to hold my leg above my head (think like front split standing up).

Are leg weights the best way to go? That's what we used for Taekwondo High kicks.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Some of my favourite exercises for strengthening the knees over toes position (these are great for beginners). Don't try these if they cause any pain though.

    Timing for daily practice?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 04:46 AM PST

Does anyone have any advice for how to get the most out of ~10-15 minutes of daily stretching practice? I'm working towards both front and middle splits and have a handful of poses I'm using but I'm not sure what time of day is best.

It's easiest for me to set consistent time aside when I wake up or before I go to bed but I feel like those might not be the best times since my muscles are cold. Is it much better to do a quick routine like this after a more intense exercice or at least a walk?

If you're an athlete interested in flexibility, this video is for you! It focuses on the hamstrings, calves, and quads in order to gain flexibility and release tightness. (GAA is a collection of Irish sports, so this video was created with athletes in mind.)

    Just wondering

I am wondering how long it will take for me to see a big like actually big improvement in my flexibility and how many times per week should I stretch to see improvement

    143 days in a row

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 09:17 AM PST

So I have been stretching for at least 15 minutes per day 143 days in a row but now I have stopped. I've stopped so I can start again but try to change my approach to what I do and how I stretch.
My stretching has been only static and I have focused on hips and hamstrings as those are my stiffest parts by far.
Stretching gave me a few scares where some muscles felt a bit torn and treated them more careful. Now I want to start again but do it every second day but do it a bit longer/harder and also cover more of my back as well as overall mobility to see if I can increase my results.
How often do you stretch? How long do you stretch? How long do you stretch per position? Do you focus on an area (like splits) at a time or always do "full body" stretching?

    Any free alternative to Romwod?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 05:05 AM PST

    Hi there,

I am looking for a flexibility routine to follow during the Christmas break as I will have plenty of time available.
I tried ROmwod for a week, it was good but I don't think is worth the price tag.
    Is there any good alternative?

    thanks

Everyday Stretching for Men ( 28M, 5'9", 210 lbs) Probably experienced more muscle cramps than anyone you know

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 08:31 AM PST

    Hi Reddit,

I come to you humbly seeking help for a problem that I have been dealing with my whole life. I frequently experience muscle cramps and they obviously get more severe after I do physical exercise. I have experienced more than a handful of times when my whole body would be cramping up and it would be so painful that I am praying to pass out.

I once started cramping in the middle of a hot shower (after just walking for 8 hrs on a golf course) literally everywhere. My hamstring on my right leg would cramp on then my left quad and then my left hamstring joined the party and invited my right quad. From trying to switch back and forth of stretching those out in the shower, my abdominals started craping very hard (MY ABS CRAMP SO MUCH) and that causes me to start stretching my abs which then causes my back/Lats to start cramping. This leads to a longer sequence of switching poses (naked and wet) to stretch out my legs/back and abs out which soon my toes/fingers/ inner groins/ foot/hips and neck all started to cramp as well. I was in the shower at a Days Inn by myself for almost 2 hrs dealing with this before I was able to actually put clothes on and then continued dealing with this for another 3 hrs everytime i even used a muscle. I literally chugged table salt/pickle juice and yellow mustard to battle the cramps (not the best methods but many friends i have that were pro athletes taught those to me to help my situation).

Those methods have worked sometimes immediately and other times not as effectively but its all I had that helped my body "relax". Weed/ Hypervolt/ epsom salt and hot water didnt help me at all. Im tired of being scared to exercise because I know what pain awaits me when I do "exercise" as simple as getting out of the car or reaching forward to tie my shoes because they lead to painful muscle cramps.

Water I know hydration is a huge factor in this and I will be the first to admit that I definitely do not drink enough EVERYDAY. I will work to do better at this for sure but that cramp attack that i described above happened after drinking a full 64oz hydroflask of water twice including another refill with water/beet juice/ and pedialyte all mixed together.

I guess what I hope I get from this post are helpful comments that can help me understand whats happening to me (whether science or experience), and how i can practice better habits to avoid these cramp attacks.

    THINGS I WANT TO KNOW:

-Is there a stretching routine that I (M28) can follow everyday to help avoid these attacks?

-Can you recommend a video/routine to help me with my super tight hamstrings that could be the main culprit in causing my abs and back to cramp?

-Im a huge fan of David Goggins and am aware he practices a stretching routine like it's a part time job everyday because it is like 3-4 hrs long and also cost him I believe almost $1,000. Is this something I desperately should be pursuing or is there other resources that may help me more effectively?

-Is there a medical condition that I should be aware of that is known to cause muscle cramps like this?

All in all even if you can't help, I appreciate if you read this and also related to it. Please leave a comment whether it hurts me or helps me.

    Thank you Reddit

Best hip opening stretches for splits?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 07:02 AM PST

Hi all. I've been training my front and middle splits for around a year and a half now. I train my splits around 1-3 times per week, sometimes more. I've gotten pretty flexible in my hamstrings, quads, and calves. However, whenever I try to get into any split, the only tightness I feel is in my hips, leading me to believe that I need to focus on opening my hips more: I train frog, butterfly, straddle, pigeon, etc. but I feel like those aren't opening up my hips as much as they need. Do I need to practice those stretches more or does anyone have any more effective hip stretches? Thank you!
