Something tragic at the same time beautiful happened today

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 02:28 PM PST

I've been meditating for 4 years and have always wanted my disabled grandpa (77M) to meditate. 4 years ago, my grandpa tripped on the parking lot and hit his neck causing permanent nerve damage. Due to the accident, he lost most of his mobility. I personally wasn't there but when my mom visited him in the hospital, grandpa started crying due to his physical and mental pain.Fast forward 4 years, he has recovered a little bit. Now, he can slowly walk with a cane but can barley do his daily needs such as putting on clothes, taking shower, going to bathroom etc. His mental and physical pain due to the disability still continues.

Just a few hours ago (1 AM), when he was walking on his own, he tripped on something and fell on the floor. He screamed for help and grandma and I rushed to him. He looked like he was in so much pain from falling. We grabbed him and carried his body back to bed. We tried to get him back to sleep but he said his waist and back was in too much pain. He struggled for couple of hours trying to find a comfortable position which he eventually does.

At 5 AM, he calls for help again. He wanted me to turn off the heater. Long story short, after he injured his nerves, his body can no longer properly regulate his body temperature causing him to overheat or become too cold. While I was turning off the heater, he tells me whenever his thoughts ran wild, pain ran down from his neck to the waist, causing him enormous pain. He then told me that, he decided to do some deep breathing to alleviate the pain. I was honestly shocked that he decided to meditate. My grandpa thinks meditation is a hoax. He thinks it is some religious nonsense that people do. He is also very stubborn and lashes out to others due to his constant physical and mental pain. Whenever I mentioned meditation which I barley did, he kind of shrugged it off. But he told me he did some deep breathing. So I told him to bring back his attention to the deep breathing whenever his mind wanders.

For the first time, when I was telling him the tips to meditate, he was willingly listening to me and immediately applied the remedies. Yes he got hurt but he decided to meditate because of it. Hopefully it will help alleviate his physical and mental pain. Hopefully, it will help him mitigate lashing out to others.

Sorry for the rant but thanks for listening:)

I feel like meditating and mindfulness would help me tremendously, but it gives me anxiety

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 11:36 AM PST

Meditating and mindfulness cause me so much anxiety. Whenever I try, I end up spiraling and putting myself in a worse place than I was before. I become much more aware of my thoughts, my body, and everything around me. I become very tense.

I am 20 years old, a very depressed and anxious person, and have been that way all my life. In the beginning of the year I tried to practice meditation, yoga, and mindfulness, but ended up going through more anxiety than I ever had before. I think this is because I go about my life trying to avoid confrontation with myself and my thoughts. I used to always dissociate as a child, and now I don't do that so much but I always feel disconnected somehow.

Anyways, if you read through all of this, have any of you been in a similar place as me and pushed through their meditation practice?

    Profound state while meditating

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 09:30 AM PST

I've recently been trying to get a solid daily meditation practice down with the goal of, well anything growth related, working through issues/fears and AP if it comes to it.

Twice now, about 35-40 mins into meditating while using binaural beats, I've gotten into a state which is quite different to anything I've experienced; the blackness of my closed eyes suddenly turned a bright white which was perceived by what felt like something other than my physical eyes. This was accompanied by the sensation that I was 'out of my mind' - I felt a shift away from the analysing/thinking mind and was just existing 'in the void'. I also experienced a mild feeling of bliss as though all my worries had melted away.

As I mentioned this has happened twice now and lasted only about 5-10 seconds each time until my analysing mind jumped back saying 'Wow, this is cool!' and distracted me back to physical reality.

I would like to be able to experience this more frequently and see where it goes. Any similar experiences or insights from you guys as to what could be occurring?

Pre-Breath Ritual for Deepening Your Meditative Practices

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 06:44 AM PST

    Good "Moon-Day" fellow Travelers!

I often hear many meditators complain that they simply can't start to meditate. They are always "thinking". I have had a few folks who told me, "I have tried, but I just can't seem to sit still" or "I have ADHD and I can't meditate" - which are all valid in their own way.

It's always okay to admit we struggle in one area or another. What isn't okay is to accept it as "true" without doing anything to test your hypothesis.

What I have found in my 20+ years of meditating was that utilizing the breath is 'a key' to going deeper into your own unconscious mind.

Most experienced meditators would say, "Simply sit still and focus on the breath - that's it!" however, someone with hyper attention deficit disorder could find focusing on your breath to be challenging.

When they fail to achieve what these experienced meditators say they should do - they become demotivated from the practice of meditation and many times abandon it altogether.

I found that doing some minor "breathwork" prior to a meditative session helps in banishing rogue thoughts aimed at occupying your awareness. The more you meditate, the easier it becomes to identify and release our awareness from these "distractors".

To help people - I created this Free Somatic Meditation Exercise entitled "Step Into Gnosis" which will help you slow down your breath, and your thoughts - allowing you to start your meditation at an advantage.

This is the way I use it.

    1. Use the Slow-down breathing technique - This essentially will slow down your breath every few cycles. Use the video to learn, then you can always do it by yourself. Very simple technique. Simply add a second to both inhale/exhale after every cycle. For example; 4-seconds in and 4 - seconds out, then 5-seconds in and 5-seconds out, until you reach at least 8-in/8-out.
    2. Start your Meditation - now that you're slow breathing, you'll probably not have too many thoughts floating in your head. It's a good time to start your meditation session. I have a timer set usually, so this is when I start the countdown.
    3. Use the Recovery Breath - at the end of the "Step Into Gnosis" video there's a "recovery breath" which essentially does the reverse of the "breath slow down" and speeds up the breath with 1-second until you reach 4-in/4-out.

    That's it.

Of course, you don't have to do this - but since I have been implementing this, I have been able to go deeper in my meditation sessions because I start off with a large portion of my "unprocessed subliminal thoughtforms" banished. I'm already relaxed, my mind is focused - all I need to do at this point is simply "Let Go, Let Be" which in the Gnosis video I use a Mantra "GRATINOS" to achieve.

Anyhow, I thought I would share this trick with those who may be struggling with these issues. I make these somatic meditation sessions because I want to make breathwork/meditation accessible to people who typically can't afford it - and arguably needs it the most.

If you try it and it helps you, please let me know. The feedback helps me shape these experiences even further.

Thanks & be well in today's adventure called - "YOUR LIFE!"

    I keep pushing away thoughts?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 07:06 PM PST

I'm five sessions into the basics course on headspace and Andy mentions the importance of simply watching your thoughts. Not following them or pushing them away but simply watching them. Every time I try to simply acknowledge a thoughts presence it fades away on the spot, am I doing something wrong or is this normal? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Music and meditation

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 10:49 PM PST

I was wondering about music and meditation. Meditation in some forms seems to be focus of the mind on a particular thing. Would focusing on a piece of music intently, a hearing meditation if you will, be beneficial? Are there studies done on this?

best meditation posture with prostate problems

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 10:31 PM PST

I used to sit down in lotus posture, but I can't anymore because of my prostate problems.

I tried laying down, but I don't know if it's because I'm not used to it yet but it doesn't feel the same.

I prefer doing static meditation instead of walking around. Is there any alternative posture for people like me?

    Meditation on Dec 21st

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 10:19 PM PST

Most people by now are probably aware that for the first time in thousands of years all of the planets will align, but I'm not sure how to describe it. I have this intense feeling that I need to meditate while its happening. I saw something about mass meditations and it keeps tugging at me so I suppose I need to know, will anyone be joining me?

    Running Meditation

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 05:19 PM PST

Today I experimented with incorporating mantra meditation into my daily run. I struggle with sitting meditation, but am an avid runner. Part of what draws me to running is the mental bath aspect a good run does for me. So today I added the mantra soham to my run. So on the in, ham on the out. Anyone else try anything like this?

Does anyone on here use the "AWARE" app? Having some issues

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 12:04 AM PST

Some time ago, someone (I think a developer or someone involved with the app) did a lifetime free giveaway for this app in a reddit post.

I hadn't used it in a while, but have recently started working on my mental health, one of the ways being meditation. It seems to be really working for me this time, however, this app has given me issues everytime which really takes me out of the meditation. Basically what happens is that the guided track just stops playing at some point throughout the meditation. Sometimes close to the end, sometimes half way through. Even when it plays through, I'm thinking during the silences if it's glitched or not, which really isn't helping.

I've really been enjoying this app and have some anxieties thinking about having to subscribe to a new one, or generally finding a new guidance I am comfortable with and all the what have yous. Does anyone know why this is happening? Anyone else who uses this app encounter similar issues and has fixed them? Or does anyone have any other recommendations of guided meditations I can go through? Even youtube or other free ones where I can do a short course over a month to really set up the foundation for further practices in the future? I am very much at the beginning phase of meditating, so any advice would be appreciated around this.

Has anyone here gotten lucid to a point of meditating in a dream?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 05:18 AM PST

I've recently started to get lucid in some of my dreams where I realise I'm dreaming, but my mind still bends to the reality of said dream, while getting a certain amount of freedom. This has happened only twice so far, maybe 3 times that I can remember recently and is really fucking trippy.

So I was thinking, has anyone here ever gotten to a point of such lucidity that they know they're dreaming and decided to meditate?

If so what was your experience like?

    New experience

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 05:53 PM PST

I've been meditating regularly for a few months now and just has a new experience for myself. After a few minutes of breathing, I started to see these waves of light that appeared like static at first.

The longer I focused on them, though, they changed and smoothed out until they looked like clouds, but moved like waves. My inhales would draw the lights away from the center and towards the edges and my exhales released them.

This also ended up being the longest I've meditated thus far along my journey and I came out feeling different than I usually do (in a good way) after I end my meditation.

It would be cool to see if this symbolizes anything in my life and also to see if anyone else has experienced something like this!
