Everyone was new at some point, how did you build yoga into your regular routine? Posted: 02 Dec 2020 10:30 PM PST I'm very new, started a few weeks ago as a way to help cope with anxiety. I love when I do practice but making it a part of my regular routine has been challenging. I've been doing online classes (Glo, prerecorded, not scheduled) at my house. I really like the time and money savings, convenience, and covid safety of being at home but it seems I'm always distracted by random house chores. "After I start this load of laundry, I'll do yoga." Next thing I know it's bedtime, I've done 8 loads of laundry but, "I'll start my day with yoga tomorrow." And the cycle repeats... I realize this is more my own time management or prioritizing issue but I'd still love to hear any tips or thoughts! I also work 12 hour night shifts, 7pm-7am, 3 varying nights a week so I usually just sleep, eat, and work those days. It's a weird schedule and has little consistency but I enjoy it and make it work. I love seeing everyone's progress pics, and really think this is a lovely encouraging community so keep that up! [link] [comments] |
I took my first class ever yesterday. Posted: 02 Dec 2020 05:39 AM PST 27 year old male here. Earlier this year I experienced the second panic attack of my life and my anxiety has been bothering me. Finally decided to see a doctor and found I have hypothyroidism, which is manageable. A few weeks later my gf got into a pretty bad car accident, she walked out okay but the car was totaled. She's a fitness instructor so being hurt is extremely detrimental let alone us only having one car, but we made it work. The following week my company lost the project that I've been managing for 3 years, which I put a lot of blood and sweat into. It was no fault of my mine, just business. But that took a personal tole on me since I gave multiple presentations to our clients on why we were best suited for the jobs. All of that weighed heavily on my mind, I was drinking a lot, lost a lot of interest in my job and just wanted to feel normal. I read about meditation and decided to try it but just felt uncomfortable trying to stop my thoughts. Life overall got better, gf got a promotion and a new car. I'm still really good at my job, earlier this year we bought a house. But my anxiety still plagued me, even with antidepressants. yesterday I took my first yoga class after talking to a friend about it. Once I felt the flow (If that's the right word) I immediately saw the appeal. My body felt like it was communicating with my mind for the first time in who knows how long. Towards the end, as you just lay there relaxing the instructor said to think about the upcoming week and who you want to be. Well, tomorrow is our 3 year anniversary, Saturday we celebrate it and suddenly the thought of the rest of our lives together just flooded my head. Going into the fetal position I started tearing up. It felt so cathartic, like I finally found what I needed to get my mind at ease with itself. It was therapeutic, I think about all the times you see people doing yoga on the beach and how insanely relaxing that must be. So I'm on board, I have wanted a new hobby and there's so much for me to learn from this. Best night of sleep I've had in years Edit : guess I just wanted to add in that we looked at rings for the first time this past Saturday. We've basically known since we met that we would get married, and have talked about it a few times. But now that everything is in a good place it's basically the next step! [link] [comments] |

Did my first dancer pose today after difficulty starting a regular practice due to hyper-mobility! Posted: 02 Dec 2020 09:19 PM PST I'm not quite confident enough to take photos/video yet, but after a difficult journey through PT and having to relearn proper form due my newly diagnosed hyper extension, today I did my first dancer pose and was able to hold it through all 10 breaths with the teacher in class! I'm pretty proud, and just wanted to share :3 [link] [comments] |

Back inflexibility and competitive attitudes in yoga Posted: 02 Dec 2020 07:19 PM PST This post is part question and part vent. Actually, let's change that to part question and part joke. My wife's a yoga teacher. She's put a lot of work into getting where she has. But there's a 'problem'. Her lower back is inflexible. This limits her ability in many poses. Although we haven't confirmed it, a fused vertebrae is possible. For me, this is a benefit! That part of the body is vulnerable and having this small area rigid at the key point seems stronger to me. AFAIK, It doesn't cause her any problem in any other area of life but yoga. Unfortunately, there's this spandex, show off, competitive toxic Instagram stuff getting to her. She can't do certain poses. As she advances we discover more and more poses that she can't do. Every day she's pushing this area of her back hard to try to loosen it up. It's become an insecurity for her. So... Other than screw Instagram yoga culture!, what can I do for her? I thought about getting a scan done on the area, confirm things and then if there's no physical reason, work in it with acupuncture... but is this really the right attitude? I don't have any problem with other people since I know it's how I respond to things that is what matters, since that is what I control and there's no point paying any attention to anything else. Posted: 02 Dec 2020 10:38 PM PST Hello all, I've recently have gotten into frog pose (been doing it at least every other day for the past three months) and I love it! BUT any advice for people with bunions??? My feet start to get uncomfortable when in it for more than five minutes. Is there anything I can do to prevent this unconformableness? [link] [comments] |
Online yoga courses (not teacher trainings)? Posted: 02 Dec 2020 05:09 PM PST I'm a casual yogi, and I mostly use yoga as a form of physical therapy/tension release. Since COVID I've been practicing through a combination of Youtube videos and live Zoom classes. I'm interested in learning more about the specifics of the poses that I'm doing, particularly from a physiology standpoint (though I also enjoy learning about the spiritual/emotional side of things as well). I want to deepen my practice and add more structure to it, so I thought an online yoga course would be cool to try out (I'm imagining some amount of homework-style learning + yoga classes), but from the searching around I've done it seems like the only thing available that's close to what I want is Yoga Teacher Training courses. I'm not interested in teaching yoga, and the YTT courses seem like a ton of commitment and effort (and money). I know I could just google around and learn things as needed, but I like the idea of having the structure of a course to deepen my knowledge and pace my learning. Does anyone know of any courses that are somewhere in between casually doing yoga videos at home with no structure and YTT courses? Or any tips for searching for something like this (since all my google searches end up yielding 200-hr YTT courses)? [link] [comments] |
Best stretches for below shoulder blades? Posted: 02 Dec 2020 08:05 PM PST Hey everyone - Since switching to distanced learning, I'm on a computer 8+ hours a day. I've been practicing tai chi for a few years now, but the stretches and techniques I've learned doesn't seem to be quite right for this spot and I was wondering if the yoga community had any recommendations. The worst spot is my right shoulder blade just beneath the scapula, between that and the spine. It's been like this for a month now and it's really distracting and painful. Ive done shoulder blade squeezes/rolls as well as a few other basic stretches but nothing has worked. Any advice? Thank you so much in advance [link] [comments] |
Need some advice regarding bad knee pain in some positions. (Beginner) Posted: 02 Dec 2020 04:58 PM PST I've been doing the same yoga video for two weeks and I'm a complete beginner to yoga (I have no flexibility or prior fitness experience) I heard a lot of people liked the 30 days of yoga with adrienne challenge so I decided to pursue it and on the day two video my knees are in seering pain; I couldn't complete the last ten minutes because the constant movement between my knees being bent in a forward fold, planking and downward dog was too much on me . I feel bad I gave up but my knees were in too much pain than what was comfortable for me to continue going. If it adds any context to why my knees could be having so much trouble I was in a car accident awhile back and one of my knees has an extreme amount of trouble than my other one when I do positions that depend on my left knee. Hope this isn't super rambly or nonsensical I just feel a little discouraged that I'm not very strong to do these things. [link] [comments] |
Need help stretching my trapezius Posted: 02 Dec 2020 01:20 PM PST I have been neglecting stretching properly the last four weeks before lifting weights and now I've pushed myself into injury. I'm probably gonna lift light for a few weeks now but I would appreciate any advice on good poses and stretches for my trap. Its tense/injured to the point where my shoulders are not symmetrical and my left shoulder sits about 1-2 inches higher than my right. I feel the pain in my right trap when looking right and not so much when looking left. Sorry if this is the wrong sub for this type of question, I can delete the post if it is. Thank you for your time. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Dec 2020 06:26 AM PST Hi! sorry if this has been asked before but I wished to ask if there was any suggested yoga routine for 3-4 days a week for absolute beginners. I skimmed through the FAQ but it seems like it's meant for people who want to tailor a program around their needs. I just want a simple routine which I can follow for 20-30 minutes per session. If it helps, I'm in my early twenties and been moderately underweight all my life. [link] [comments] |
Wheel pose with reversed hands Posted: 02 Dec 2020 08:45 AM PST Hi, due to a wrist injuries I started doing wheel pose with the hands reversed (basically with the fingers pointing in the opposite direction and the thumbs pointing out, then I realized that is never thought in that way.. is there a reason? Is it dangerous for shoulders or some are there any other negative aspects? Thx in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Dec 2020 08:22 PM PST I'm asking this question because I saw from an article where it says "Men are more likely than women to sustain major injuries from yoga". Is this true? Does gender affect flexibility? Articles like this: https://cdn.citl.illinois.edu/courses/KIN122/week2/chapter6/web_data/file8.htm truly makes me anxious... The reason I want to follow female Yoga videos is because there's this Korean Female YouTuber who makes Yoga videos in Korean (my native language) so I understand more in depth context. Hope thos helps and look forward to seeing your responses. Thanks 😍 [link] [comments] |
