CorePower - Legit or MLM in disguise?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 06:28 PM PST

I LOVE CorePower - have been going 6x per week for the last two years. It's my jam.

I was approached by an instructor that I adore about taking TT. I've always wanted to teach and was pretty committed to the idea... until I found out that there was a required extension class (not mentioned and upwards of $500). That was NOT mentioned in any of the half dozen interactions I've had. The more research I do, it seems the fisher it gets. It seems like a LOT of money is being made off of TT.

I'm an active member, so it feels like I just might have been an easy mark. My heart is broken because I love CorePower and the community that lives in it.

Has anyone done CP TT? What has your experience been like? Any guidance is appreciated.

Is there a way to do a sound bath at home?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 06:08 PM PST

I did a sound bath last year after a 45 minute yoga session (they were combined into 1 class) and had the most relaxing time of my life. Would there be a nice way to recreate this feeling in my own space/

After a decade of doing yoga, I just did my first “real” chaturanga.

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 09:10 PM PST

I've doing yoga off and on for over a decade. I am overweight and have never had much strength in my upper body. Yoga always felt suited to me because I have a pretty flexible lower body, but chaturanga has basically been my nemesis. Here are the stages of my chaturangas:

    1. Attempting to do them on my feet like everyone else. Not nearly enough strength. Flopping on the ground.

    2. Moving to my knees. Still not enough strength. Flopping on the ground but this time from my knees.

    3. Then I had a breakthrough. I had a teacher demonstrate bending at the hips while on my knees. This puts more weight into the lower body and less into the arms, which makes it easier to actually have a controlled descent and pull through into up dog.

    4. Sun Salutation B happened to me. I started doing ashtanga about a month ago. For anyone unfamiliar, you don't a fuckton of chaturangas in ashtanga, particularly during sun salutations B. At first I hated this part because even on my knees, I couldn't get through the fifteen chaturangas with good form. But I just kept at it, and after about three weeks of consistent practice, was able to have good form on my knees throughout.

    5. Last week I tried doing a chaturanga on my feet instead of on my knees. I couldn't do it. I flopped onto the ground. Then I tried again tonight and I did three in a row! I am still working on fluid pull throughs to up dog, but just the fact that I am able to lower down and hover feels like a miracle.

TL;DR: Chubby, weak-armed girl did her first chaturanga.

As a male, for some reason, I've always avoided yoga. Now that I have a bit of issues with my knees, I'm wondering, can yoga help?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 03:36 PM PST

So recently, my knees started sounding like this...until I see a physical therapist I want to avoid any strenuous exercise. I'm a 30 yo male by the way.

I was wondering, in terms of Yoga, I had a few question such as:

    1) Could I burn as many calories as I could jogging on a treadmill or using an elliptical for an hour? If so, how long would it take?

    2) Would it in any way have an impact on my knees? I'm literally afraid of bending my knee much and worried so want something where I don't have to as much. When I used the elliptical for example my knees would be used every rotation.

    Recommendations for knee friendly yoga

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 11:47 AM PST

I know I can always modify just about anything, but does anyone have any online instructors who have very knee friendly workouts?? I am in PT in an attempt to strengthen my leg to assist my patella tracking pre surgery sometime in 2021 when COVID hopefully isn't so in the way. My providers encourage yoga and activity, and I'd love to find an online instructor who doesn't do a ton of stuff like squats. Thank you!!

How to prevent knee pain in Utthan Pristhasana (lizard pose)?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 12:55 PM PST

I love the stretch in this pose, however whichever knee is on the ground always hurts. I can't stay in the pose long because of it. I'm not sure if it's because I have super bony knees or if I'm doing something wrong.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!! :)

To all my yoga instructors... how did you do it?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 12:00 PM PST

I would love to become a yoga instructor one day. The first time I watched Rachel Brathen I was in love with the flows. Then, I got on the mat... I was convinced it would be my dream to get certified and do this forever and to teach others who feel the same way. I am a beginner. I don't have my headstands or handstands, I can't do the splits. BUT, life is a project and this will be mine for a while. I'm hoping I'll be able to master these things by next year within flows. But how did you do it? What postures should I know before taking the certification class? Any books you recommend? Teach me your wayyysss ❤️πŸ’›πŸ’š

Brief “Electric” string sensation while doing boat pose.

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 01:55 PM PST

Whenever I do boat pose, and only during this time, I get what feels like a tiny burst of electricity on the side of my thigh, and only on the right one.

There is no pain, but it startles me and feels slightly uncomfortable. It feels like there's a string going down my leg that I never feel at any other time, and that it is "catching" onto something and the whole string "electrifies" for a fraction of a second.

This only happens when I do boat pose.

It does not hurt, and my leg does not get numb.

Does anyone know what this could be?

My guess is that I'm activating some severely underused muscle, or I'm catching a nerve somehow, or I'm releasing some perpetually spasmed or tight muscle.

I also think it might have something to do with the fact that I almost always cross my right leg over my left when I sit down (possibly causing a very tight hip).

It almost feels like it's connected to a muscle in my lower back or right glute.

I don't want to damage myself or get hurt, so I'm asking what this is and if I should be worried.

    Thanks!

    Breathing difficulty in certain postures

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 05:46 AM PST

I practiced yoga for years up until a year ago. Last year, I got sick and stopped practicing. I've been getting back into it the last 2 weeks. I'm doing daily for 20-40 minutes roughly. My biggest issue right now, some positions are SO hard to breathe in. I know this is huge, the breathing, and I don't ever remember this being any issue before. Certain twists for example, I cannot get my breath deep, it's short and choppy. Do any of you have any tips for this?

I'm surprised at how much strength and flexibility I've lost. It's going to take a while to get it back, but gah, my body feels better already.

    Holding Space

    Posted: 23 Dec 2020 07:25 AM PST

    What does this mean?

Please forgive my somewhat cynical attitude towards this phrase. I mean, you can hold a baby or a glass of water or an umbrella. You can hold stocks in a portfolio or horses in a corral or a prisoner in jail. You can hold a Christmas party or a memorial service. But holding space? What in the world does this mean?

I get the impression that the person using the phrase wants to create a sense of gravitas. Other than that, the meaning escapes me. What do you think?

Edit: the downvoting and negative comments reinforce my belief that using this kind of language is a cult-like behavior. The cool kids know what it means. If you question it, watch out.

How do I know if I’m pushing myself too far or not?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 11:29 PM PST

I started doing stretching before going to bed. I mostly want to work on my back and hamstrings.

I'm trying mostly the head to knee pose and standing forward bend. How do I know if i'm stretching it or hurting myself? I'm not really sure the difference of hurt that will help or hurt that will do damage.

Also, should I bend my knees when doing the standing forward bend? I want to do it with my knees straight but I was told otherwise.

I heard that sleeping on the floor helps your back. Is that true?
