I forced myself to do a big old workout for my non-existant booty & then did a delicious little yoga flow. As I was laying on my mat in shavasana just soaking it in I felt SO GOOD. I always feel good after yoga but since I've been in such a funk lately and haven't been "bothering" with movement of any kind, this burst of movement felt EXTRA great. My body feels awake and alive. I popped an iron pill (lol) and chugged water 🙏 My goal for tomorrow is to get up early & get some yoga in. I don't want to fall back into a funky funk ♡ [link] [comments] |
| Affordable Online Yoga Classes Posted: 14 Jan 2021 11:25 AM PST Hi all! I recently branched out and started teaching affordable and accessible online yoga classes. I felt there was a real need to build an uplifting yoga community that wasn't out of reach for the majority financially. Classes are only $5 each for a drop in, and there are class passes available. I'm offering Blue (slow flow) and Purple (vinyasa) classes, both live and recorded - practice on your own time. Right now, the schedule is only 3 classes/per week, but if the demand is there, I can always add more! [link] [comments] |
| two questions from a beginner yogi Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:14 PM PST hey beautiful people!! so I've been practising for a while and have two major issues I'm hoping some more experienced yogis can help advise on: 1) any poses to strengthen my triceps for rising from chaturanga to upward dog? right now I can go from plank down to chaturanga, but lack the strength to raise back up from chaturanga ;_; 2) what's happening/what should I work on if in Navasana/boat pose, my hips (I think it's the external rotators) ache instead of my core, and this stops me from bringing my knees from bent 90deg to straight? thanks so much everyone xx hope 2021 has been treating you all kindly, in yoga practice and in life! | Let go of the things that no longer serve you Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:36 AM PST I've gone through a major change over the past few months thanks to yoga, both the physical and spiritual practice. I first encountered the saying "Let go of the things that no longer serve you" in the first yoga video I ever saved on my Youtube account back when I first tried yoga years ago. It never really meant anything to me. Sure, I could intellectually understand that holding onto things that has stopped benefiting you just out of habit, or fear of letting go, can keep you from moving forward. There's a difference between knowing something, and Knowing something. Over the years I've gradually come to understand another idea, that in my practice I'm never trying to achieve something which is not already present within my being. Be it physically, mentally, or spiritually. Everything I could ever need is already within me, within my body, all I have to do is identify the blockage and work to soften and overcome it. The primary work on internalizing this idea came first in my physical practice where it became clear to me, after identifying and overcoming blockages within my body, that the capacity to perform physical feats are inherit within me. Then came the same realization in my meditative practice. The meditative state is not something foreign that I'm trying to achieve, all I have to do is strip away the blockages and it's there in all of its serene glory. Once I understood, really understood, that everything is already within me it hit me. The primary thing that was holding me back, the biggest blockage, was everything I held onto that no longer served me. In that moment I Knew what that meant. The profound change that took place within me as I came to see the simple truth hiding in plain sight caused a major shift in how I viewed myself and how I related to the rest of existence. I've only experienced a similarly powerful personality change after drinking Ayahuasca, and now it happened on the mat on a weekday as I was doing my daily practice. I haven't been especially materialistic for years, or so I thought. I had perceived a distinction between me and others based on the idea that they were slaves to consumption, and I had at least partially broken free of what ailed so many others. When I realized what it really meant to let go of things I realized just how attached I was. This realization didn't free me from attachment, but it did illuminate a way forward. I might not hold onto a lot of material things, but I'm attached to a lot of my baggage, I carry my history with me and it's keeping me from moving forward. Letting go isn't as simple as just realizing one day that it'd be a good idea to let go, it's a practice. And by now I know what it really means to practice something. Just as consistency is key in my yoga practice I now see it being key to my process of letting go. And just as my yoga practice has a spiritual and physical side maybe my letting go practice should as well. So I started letting go of physical things. This has been the story of how I stepped off the mat one day with the realization that a minimalist lifestyle was my way forward. | Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:26 PM PST Hi all not sure if asking for advice is allowed here so apologies if it's not. A little bit of my back ground first off, I am 34 male I have been in labourer intensive jobs my whole life and it is not an option for to change my way of making an income to something less physical. I suffer from many aches and pains mostly on the right side of my body I am now aware I need to balance out my tasks to using both left and right hands etc. I have been practicing yoga for two years I have spent thousands of dollars at doctors osteopaths physio acupuncture etc wile all these things help to a degree they are all temporary and yoga has proven to be the most affective. I have been working on opening my hip flexor because this area seems to affect the sternomastoid muscle which is where most of my pain is situated also my trap and everything between the neck and hip flexor holds untold amount of tension. What I am asking you good people is aside from constant practice any tips on nailing forward splits as this seems to really help but I am literally stuck in the lunge position and cannot progress past this point my goal is to have forward and side splits completely nailed this year the sooner the better. | Posted: 14 Jan 2021 05:40 PM PST I was a bit hesitant to buy the Manduka Pro mat due to concern about the difficult break-in process and slipperiness but decided to splurge on it anyway. Well, after salting it and leaving it in the sun in my backyard for a few hours I decided to wash it off with my pressure washer, which I was using earlier in the day on the concrete. This seemed to do a really good job at quickly removing the residual coating and the mat now seems to be very grippy. It seemed to work for me, but attempt at your own risk! Cheers! I used to lift and run quite a bit but that seems so unappealing to me now. I am wondering if there are people out there that stay in decent shape by only practicing yoga? I am not doing it for my appearance but I do want to stay physically fit. I understand the strength yoga provides which is why I feel it could but just wanting to see what others think! She's my age, we grew up in same city etc. I have to make confirmation of my seats thru Instagram since that's how this yoga studio does it, you have to DM the instructor. So I follow her on IG, sometimes I'll comment on her stories like "oh that's cool" or something very neutral. Recently she made a story and I want to reply to it to try to start a short convo. However, I kinda want to get to know her more but I'm worried cuz I know it's because I feel like I have no friends in my city since moving from college. Idk what to do because the power dynamic and I don't wanna make her uncomfortable. I don't want to stop going to yoga either since this is the only open yoga studio for miles and I can't do yoga at home cuz my family is not respectable of privacy. [link] [comments] |

I love that I'm getting better and better but I have so many things I still want to master. I'll practice my balancing in the shower and currently I'm cooking dinner messing around with poses off the top of my head working on my form. How about you? [link] [comments] |

| Where do I travel to for a meditation retreat? Posted: 14 Jan 2021 09:19 AM PST Long story short: I heard a guy tell me that he spent a year meditating for an hour each day. It felt great. That's until he went on a 10 day silent retreat (vipassana). He learned what meditation was really about and learned techniques that made his old meditation seem like just wasting time with your legs crossed. I work in sales, a pretty stressful environment, and I am looking to take a short getaway for about a week, ten days very soon. I don't just want the ordinary pool-hotel vacation, but preferably somewhere with alot of nature and hopefully some buddhists or monks or traditional meditation teachers. I'm looking to go to the roots of it, to be able to go deeper within myself. What places can you recommend I travel to? And how do I get around this with just a low budget? I'm willing to just travel with my backpack and go stay somewhere, where I'd be welcome for some days. I'm not looking for commercial meditation retreats or anything of that sort, but rather something unique and original. A place of true vibrance. Let me know your suggestions and/or travel stories. | Yoga mat still smells like garlic Posted: 14 Jan 2021 10:05 AM PST Looking for cleaning tips. So I made the mistake of leaving my manduka mat out while I was cooking (I love garlic) and now my mat has smelled ever since then. I've tried spraying with an apple cider vinegar mix (1:1 water), letting it soak over night, then showering with it to rinse off, and air drying over night. Now it smells like apple cider vinegar and garlic 😩 I've only had the mat for a couple years. Will the smell linger forever or is there something else I could try? [link] [comments] |
| How to build forearm strength for handstand? Posted: 14 Jan 2021 04:47 AM PST This post is the result of months of frustration. I have been trying to learn the handstand for a looong time now and the forearm strength is holding me back. I have decent enough overhead shoulder mobility (can touch the wall with the back of my palms with my hands straight overhead and my lower back straight against the wall), good wrist mobility (no pain even if I don't warm up), good core strength (can't really be too sure about this as I can't hold the handstand yet but my hollow body hold is really good) and decent enough scapula elevation strength. What lacks is the forearm strength. When I started, for the first few months I didn't even know that you needed to push that hard with your fingers to stop yourself from falling into overbalance. I can balance chest to wall for 2-3 seconds but as soon as I go into slight over balance I fall forward. No matter how hard to push through my fingers. I did my little research before writing this post. It's like my last resort at this point. I came across the execrise heel pulls and it seemed like the perfect execrise for me because it strengthens the forearms in a way that's most specific to the handstand. But the problem is, I can't do it. I just can't! Trust me I have been trying this for the last three weeks almost every day but no matter how much I push, my heels just won't come off the wall, even an inch. It's not helping at all. I have also come across some exercises like finger extension, palm lift (but your fingers stay on the ground); but I have the similar problem with them as well. Either I can do them (the easy variations) or I just can't. So I can do like 10-15 finger extensions on my knees but as soon as I go into the harder progression I just can't lift my fucking palms! I don't know what to do. I am ready to start training for handstand push up (can do 5+ wall handstand push up) but the balance is holding me back. Please help me because I'm starting to lose hope and thinking of giving up on handstand permanently (which of course would mean I would never be able to most advance movements). Thank you!
