[COMP] Headstand - how I slowly progressed with the 'king' of the asanas

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 10:28 AM PST

What do these phrases actually mean?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 04:04 PM PST

I've been practicing yoga consistently for about three months now using the Down Dog app, and I love it! Looking forward to joining classes in person when there's not a pandemic to worry about.

That said, there are some barriers to understanding for me with some of the words/phrases used in the app, so I thought I'd ask here. I did do several searches to try to find the answers first but didn't see anything--please forgive me if I overlooked (or simply couldn't find) old posts that may already answer this. I promise I tried!

Also, I am autistic and am asking these questions with the utmost sincerity. I struggle mightily to understand things that aren't literal, and I suspect that's what's going on here. Once I gain clarity, then I can remember the colloquial/metaphorical usage of the word, but otherwise I'm lost.

    Root
"Root through your sit bones," or "Root through your feet." What does this mean, physically? Does it mean PUSH through my feet? How do I push if I'm standing? I don't understand. I'm not partially levitating; I can't add more weight onto my feet than my body's weight unless I pick up an object. I find this one especially frustrating and opaque to understand.

    Breathe into...
"Breathe into your side body," for example. How do I breathe into a specific part of my body? I fill my lungs with breath. I can't make the breath go somewhere other than my lungs. The side of my body doesn't have extra lungs I can breathe into.

Slide your shoulders down your back
I can't slide them down my back, it's not physiologically possible, so I'm sure it means something else. When I hear this, I pull my shoulders back and down as far as humanly possible. Is that all it means?

Thank you so much if you read this, and thank you especially if you have insight. Again, I'm sorry if I missed anything already posted about this!

Transitioning from Downward Dog to Low Lunge

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:21 PM PST

Hello! I've been practicing yoga regularly for a year now! I have finally been noticing a lot of improvement in my strength, flexibility, and form. However, since I've been practicing I've struggled to bring either leg from downward dog up and into a low lunge without adjusting. My legs cannot make it all the way and I'm having to adjust an entire foot length. Does anyone have suggestions or advice? Will I eventually be able to bring my legs up into a low lunge and maybe I'm just being impatient?

Just started stretching/yoga to help back pain. Now all my joints are popping/squeaking way more than they used to. Is this normal?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 04:19 PM PST

I started going to a physical therapist a few weeks ago due to low/mid back pain. She put me on a stretching regiment with some light yoga as well. I now notice all of my joins (mostly knees/shoulders/ankles) pop constantly or feel "squeaky" when I move them. The back pain hasn't really improved and the popping/squeaking has me concerned. My physical therapist/doctor don't seem super worried. Have you guys experienced this?

How do you find time for/incorporate exercise around yoga?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 07:52 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

I love my daily yoga practice, and I've been very dedicated to it this year. It has made me much more aware of my overall health, and as a result I have been eating better and enjoying more activities.

I am thinking about doing some basic strength training, but I don't want to overwork myself or detract too much from my practice. I am curious what you all do and how you fit it into your schedule. I am currently following a yoga 30 day challenge, and the practices are fairly short at 20-30 minutes each. I also add another 20-30 minutes of a sun salutation practice or flexibility work a few days week.

Thanks everyone! I'm interested to hear your responses.

How do I exit Halasana plow pose without rolling over?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 08:23 PM PST

I'm alright somewhat with putting my legs over my head but to slowly lift them back and have them on the mat...I end up doing a roll...

Why does low back feel like it is going to snap in seal?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 03:23 PM PST

I am new to yoga. Working on correcting stiffness, imbalances and general inflexibility. I have apt, not sure of this contributes, but anytime I do Sphinx or seal poses, I barely feel a stretch in my abdomen, and it always feels like my low back is bearing all the weight? Any tips or tricks? I know it probably is a combo of me being new, and my imbalances.

Tough because I know my abs are tight and this seems like the best stretch for them. Catch 22

    Yoga philosophy reading recs

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 11:26 AM PST

Does anyone have any recommendations for books that relate yoga philosophy to science, or is just a little more digestible for someone who isn't heavily spiritual? (Without losing the history or whitewashing! Which maybe isn't possible?) Thanks!

How easy is to keep Manduka (prolite) in lighter colours free from stains especially when practicing outside?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 02:45 PM PST

Initially I meant to get the black mat, but I'm worried about it getting really hot in the summer, even with a towel. Potential next choice is Black Sage, does anyone have experience with a Manduka mat in this colour or any of the lighter ones? I'll take any tips for lighter coloured mats!

Yoga for seniors with limited mobility.

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 07:59 AM PST

I'm wondering if anyone know of any online yoga programmes for those with injuries and limited mobility, in this case for someone senior.

For context: My mum up until the pandemic was doing yoga classes in her local village hall with a few other people from the village, all mostly senior, once a week. As it was a small group all of a similar age the teacher was able to shout out substitution poses for those with injuries/aches/pains, and my mom loved her classes and found great benefit from them and was making great progress with strength, balance and mobility.

Obviously with the pandemic classes have stopped face to face but she's struggled to find an online substitution. Due to an old wrist injury (her right wrist is mostly metal) and arthritis she cannot perform planks/downward dog etc, and for example cannot perform pigeon poses due to old age hips/arthritis. Adapting existing videos isn't really an option as she doesn't have enough knowledge of substitute poses to know what to do instead.

It might not exist but does anyone know of any online programmes/practitioners I could refer her to? I've looked through Adriene's videos and there are a few standing videos and the odd video for seniors but they are only short videos or one off's. I would love to find a programme with a different practice for her each week. I've also looked at simply searching 'wrist free yoga' into YouTube, but the videos that come up might not use the wrists but would still be too fast and contain poses like gomukhasana which there's no way on this earth she's getting her legs into.

`Thank you for any help :)

    Nauseous during backbend poses

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 06:33 AM PST

Hi all. I've noticed lately that in poses where I arch my back, lean my head back, or any other pose that causes my chest and/or abdominal muscles to stretch, I get a strange feeling like being nauseous. I don't feel dizzy or anything, but this feeling keeps me from getting into depth with many poses. Anyone who has a similar experience or has any idea why is this happening? I'm not sure whether this is normal or not.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    Alo yoga pants

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 04:18 AM PST

    Hi all!

I have been always a lulelemon leggings lover, all my leggings are Align 25 ( size 4 ) in different colors, recently I've been hearing a lot of good reviews of Alo yoga pants so I just got a 7/8 high-waist airbrush legging (size small) online, however, after wearing it today, I realized it is not that "high-waisted", it was all okay when I pulled it up to cover my belly button, but after I walked or moved a little, it will slightly drop and then my belly button will be exposed, I really prefer my yoga pants to be really high waisted, I don't have this kind of problem when I wear lululemon (it doesn't drop). My question is, is 7/8 high- waist airbrush leggings was designed to not cover up belly button, or should I size up if I plan to buy another pair?

    Thanks!

Does anyone know the name of the pose where you're in a deep lunge while you're in a back bend and grab your ankle? Thanks :)

    Shortcomings of YWA ?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:30 AM PST

What are shortcomming of Adrienne's practice ?

I've been doing yoga at home off and on for a couple of years, and never went to a studio for reasons. I've tried a couple of other free yoga video on Youtube and found them too challenging for me.

This year I started her 30 days challenge again, but as a beginner that never talked about his practice with anyone I don't have the maturity to see what she does well and what she doesn't.

So I'm asking you, more experienced yogis out there: what should I be aware of, following only Adrienne's video?

    Sweet sweet therapeutic release!

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 10:36 PM PST

I haven't been practicing consistently lately. I know I should be practicing really everyday- but with some anxiety and covid and lack of private space in my living situation I have found excuses not to keep it regular.

Further, I have been dealing with some really unfortunate digestive issues- I think that's where I hold my anxiety, there and my throat.

ANYWAYS, got out the mat tonight, soaked in the tub for about ten minutes so I was really warm when I got to the mat. Turned on a favorite session of YWA- Day 8: Meditate. Hearing her first word, I immediately heard the rumbling inside my ears when the tears start forming. With the first breaths of the practice all the tears just came out, slowly but steadily, for atleast the first ~5 minutes. FELT SO GOOD. I needed that!

Also a little digestive discomfort followed but I think it's the good kind of discomfort working itself out in a way after the bodywork... Hopefully this can encourage someone to hit the mat tonight :)

What is Baptiste Yoga and is it a style or is it a way to do Power Yoga? And how do I do it?

    Posted: 21 Jan 2021 06:30 AM PST

22 days ago, I wrote a post writing about my updated Yoga routine. I asked what type/style of Yoga it was and if I could add more stuff or better some things.

I got one reply saying to me (a summary):

"You've got your own Vinyasa flow (which is great). Based on your current routine, you might look into Baptiste Yoga. It is pretty similar and has more poses."

Btw, my goal for doing Yoga is to:

    1. Grow muscle mass (I'm skinny).
    2. Increase flexibility.
    3. Better my balance.

I want to accomplish these goals in a relaxed, mindfull manner.

I searched for Baptiste Yoga and it relates to both Baron Baptise(the founder of "Baptiste Yoga") and Power Yoga (a Yoga style, based on Viyansa, but more athletic).

If Baptiste Yoga a style of Yoga or is it based on Power Yoga? Either case, how do I do both Baptiste Yoga and Power Yoga?

My current routine was (after a couple of days):

This is my updated yoga routine:

    1. 8-10 Sun salutations (for the moment).

    2. Warrior position. I start with Warrior 1. Then do warrior 2. When I'm finishing warrior 2, I do angle (found out it wasn't pyramids). Then I do triangle. After this, I stand up and eventually pass to try Warrior 3. I repeat step 2 on the other leg.

    3. Once I finish step 2, I do pin pose. Then I pass to plank.

    4. I pass to half-cobra, then do cobra.

    5. I do child, then pass to table to do cow and cat.

    6. After doing normal cow and cat, I pass to balancing table and do cow and cat at the same time (my knee being forward to cat). I do this on both arms and legs.

    7. I do child pose to rest a bit. Then do downward dog (I move my legs back and forth, helps my flexibility on the pose and the balance). Later, I go back to pin pose, stand up and end the exercise (not the yoga).

    8. I rest a bit, then move to dancer's pose (both legs). Later, I pass to tree pose (both legs).

    9. I sit on the mat/floor. I flex both of my legs, then move to reverse tabletop pose. Later, I do bridge pose a couple of times.

    10. I rest on the mat/floor. I flex both of my legs up. Then, I pass and end the yoga with corpse pose.

I want to add/try more poses like pigeon, half moon, balance plank, sphinx, between others.

I stopped doing Yoga for a while because I have online school, however, I got back to it (to do yoga).

I'm going to see if I wake up earlier to do Yoga "at time". My Yoga routine takes like 40 minutes to 1 hour to complete.

Btw, today I woke up at 5:30 am (I already have experience with waking up early). My classes start at 8:00 a.m. I entered at 8:02-3 a.m.
