| Posted: 05 Jan 2021 06:39 AM PST I've always enjoyed smoking and I smoked a lot. Like every addict, I found ways to justify it: it's my only vice, I could be run over by a bus tomorrow, I don't drink, etc etc.. I never even considered quitting. I started doing yoga 2.5 years ago, by "accident". I was looking at ways to ease my back pain, I was never interested in the practice. Came across a video from Adriene in a google search and gave it a go. I was hooked within a week. After about 6 months, I had switched to ashtanga & had started to learn about the 8 limbs and while I'm not a very spiritual person, I liked many of the guiding principles, especially the yamas. I couldn't practice ahimsa (non-violence) by slowly poisoning myself every day. By that stage, yoga had already helped me better control my anxiety and panic disorders. After a year, I finally felt calm for the first time in over 4 decades, and I knew I'd never stop practising yoga. It's hard to sustain ujjayi breath as a smoker, and I wanted my practice to go beyond just the physical aspect, so I decided smoking didn't fit my life anymore. I didn't need it anymore, I had yoga now. :) This is the time of the year many ponder new resolutions. It's never too late :) I'll be 50 this year. I wished I stopped sooner, but it's still better then not stopping at all. If anyone is considering starting yoga late in life or quitting smoking, do it! In a year's time you'll be so happy you did. | Posted: 05 Jan 2021 04:57 PM PST I've attempt a 30 day Yoga challenge a few different times in the past and didn't even get fully through it. I feel pretty confident that I will make it through this current challenge despite wanting to give up during the practice itself at times. I think it's because I find the poses intimidating (especially for my size, I'm not thin). So I start judging if I'm doing them right, or want to quit when I feel I'm not strong/ flexible enough. What I've noticed this go round?
I've decided to feel less threatened by the poses and instead look at them as something I will grow into, and how good it will feel to finally achieve certain poses. Yes, I know, this will take more than the 30 days to achieve, so I would like to make Yoga a daily practice after the challenge. One thing I have noticed is that my lower abdomen has been crampy off and on. I'm blessed to not get period cramps so to have this soreness there is kinda making we wonder if I'm doing something wrong or if it's just the muscles I've not used in who knows how long, being stretched and flexed, it's not painful, as it is more so a soreness. I've also been dedicating 30 mins to a seated meditation and wonder if that may also be what's causing the soreness as I'm not used to sitting in that seated position for that long at all... I'm not asking nor inquiring medical advice, just wondering if anyone has experienced similar things when starting Yoga. Overall, I am enjoying the practice, and the newfound appreciation for my body as it endures new poses and look forward to further differences in flexibility and strength. [link] [comments] |
| Encouragement and advice needed for a 200RYT grad who feels like she got nothing from her class Posted: 05 Jan 2021 06:06 PM PST Hello everyone! I have been practicing since 2013. In 2019, I received my 200 hour certification. I spent a decent amount of money but this class itself wasn't very good. This surprised me because it had a lot of really great reviews online and from a few yoga teachers I spoke with (turns out they had some some of his specialty classes like Ayurvedic medicine or meditation -- short classes, not his full YTT). There really was no curriculum, the teacher told us to Google a lot of questions that we had regarding asanas and alignment (yes, he literally told us to google some of this stuff) and said that his style of teaching didn't include him actually prepping for a class, he said he just walked in, saw what he had written in the "Syllabus" and would teach off of the top of his head...and he certainly did. He ended up doing a lot of rambling (and we ended up hearing a lot of "well you guys can Google this later"). To me, this resulted in a lot of really messy and unrefined lessons. I didn't feel all that confident coming out of that class. I did learn a few things here and there regarding gods and goddesses within Hinduism, but nothing about asanas and sequencing of real substance (he told us yet again to Google a lot of the poses he said he'd teach us to do and once said he didn't care about alignment). I thought this was just my insecurities talking but I felt like I truly suffered for it. He even spelled my name wrong on my certification. It wasn't a malicious thing. It just felt like he wasn't all there for the class. He even told us to look at other yoga teacher's websites and "copy what they have" and that was the "business" portion of the class. I taught a few classes afterward but again, I never felt like I did the best I could have done with "proper" (I use quotes because I'm sure his style had suited a lot of people and maybe I'm also trying to be kind about this) training. As such I sort of gave up on teaching because I felt scammed. But I still want to teach. This is something that I really feel like I should do, and has been something I have wanted to do since I took my first class. Lately I've been seeing people have some good experiences doing online YTT. Fellow yogis I'm asking for some suggestions and advice. Do you recommend any particular course? I have been teaching my mom and my boyfriend and a few of my friends throughout the pandemic but I would absolutely love a refresher. I was planning on doing another YTT last year but with multiple deaths in the family, including my father, hindered that. I've read the Mark Stephens books and I loved them, but I feel some guidance (I've seen programs where they ask you to record yourself teaching so they can give feedback) would also be valuable. I love yoga and want to share it — but I want to feel like I have a good teaching foundation in it. Sorry for the lengthy post. To a degree I suppose I'm venting, but I would LOVE some recommendations (and encouragement). [link] [comments] |

| A simple yet effective insight to assist with enlivening your practice ♀️♂️ Posted: 05 Jan 2021 05:23 PM PST "Where you are is where it's at." Unsettled energy, perturbed by vritti, adrift in the kalachakra, seeks to assuage restlessness and desire by pursing exogenous stimulation. It's natural: our CNS is wired in such a way. The alchemical and yogic inversion is turning the instrument back upon itself, akin to modifying and accentuating the instrument of a microscope or telescope and thereby improving the energetic resolution of bodymind perception and facility. Because we spend much of our lives directed towards the origin of novel input, the vast dimensions of stillness, concentration, and body movement are dampened and muted, primarily through desensitization and familiarity. It is often believed to be a non-traversable foundation; that is, the terrain to explore is "out there" in the world. Yes, the realm of form and energy is inviting, beautiful, and complex - yet so too is the mahabindu that processes it. To our joyful realization, with equal parts grace and serendipity, it might be realized and appreciated that your spine (djed pillar) itself is a mountain to lovingly climb, that breath is a syncopated friend of rhythmic time, that our sinews, tendons, muscles, organs, and bloodflow can be connected to and interfaced with mindfully. Send love to the seldom appreciated nuances of your being that encase your passenger ride of cosmic consciousness, feel the Sun holding the Earth as you sing the Gayatri to Surya, emit energies of gratitude and recognition to the waters that flows throughout your activated reservoir of awareness. As the title to a Shpongle song goes, "Nothing is Something Worth Doing." Much love, thank you for reading, and good luck with your practice. 🔱 [link] [comments] |
| Anyone got any good mom hacks for districting your child for yoga time? Posted: 05 Jan 2021 11:18 AM PST I have it pretty good with just one child - a four year old boy. I like to see if he wants to take a shower and give him the works - the best toys, the crayons, the tub paint, and a small bucket for his color changing drops. Keeps him in there for about 30 minutes and I'll do yoga with the door open right outside. Another great one we did today was make playdoh - it's usually a once a month occurrence and the playdoh usually dries up within a few days or crumbles a part and makes a huge mess and I end up tossing it so that definitely keeps him busy for a bit. Other sensory bins are great too, kinetic sand, dried chickpeas ect. Sometimes I'll do yoga with my son when he's into it but normally he just wants to jump all over me...if you want to get your kids into yoga I recommend cosmic kids on YouTube - it's definitely more for them than for you but she does a great job of engaging my son with storytelling and basic poses or plays on poses within the story. Any other yoga moms got some good yoga-mom tips? Can be anything! [link] [comments] |

| Posted: 05 Jan 2021 08:21 PM PST I am confused as to whether this is a beautiful syncretism of two religions, or the cultural appropriation of a Hindu practice. It definitely seems harmless and provides great results, but stripping it of its original meaning and adding another puts it in a different light, and I don't know which is right. What do yall think? | Lower back hurts in Shavasana?? Posted: 05 Jan 2021 12:46 PM PST I recently restarted my yoga practice after a long break, and Shavasana is now causing a lot of pain in my lower back when it didn't used to. My lower back kind of hollows out in the pose and it's an intense pain along my lower spine. I have to do ball instead and kind of rock back and forth to massage the area. I used to love ending my practice with Shavasana because it's so zen, and now it just hurts! Any insight or advice from instructors or someone who dealt with the same issue? TIA! [link] [comments] |

| Triangle Pose - Wobbly Knee Issue Posted: 05 Jan 2021 06:35 PM PST I'm trying out yoga seriously for the first time (I say seriously because I've tried it here and there over the years). I'm doing Fightmaster Yoga's 30-day beginner challenge and Day 5 introduces triangle pose. I know from the video that I'm not supposed to lock my knee in this pose, but try as I must my knee just wobbles between locked and completely bent. The whole pose I'm just forcing my knee to unlock, trying to soften the bend a bit so that my leg is straight landing back in locked. Any advice on how to soften my pose so that my knee doesn't lock while keeping a straight leg? It's not causing any pain or anything (yet) I just want to make sure I'm moving in the right direction. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
| I’m considering buying an ompractice membership... does anyone have any experience or advice for me? Posted: 05 Jan 2021 06:07 PM PST My yoga studio is closed, and I'm unmotivated with using YouTube yoga classes for months now (mostly yoga with Adrienne). Does anyone have any good or bad experience with ompractice, which has live zoom yoga classes? [link] [comments] |
| Need advice for mat becoming too smooth where I put palms / feet Posted: 05 Jan 2021 02:06 PM PST I practice yoga on a manduka eko mat. After each practice I spray it with water/vinegar mix and wipe it with a sponge. However, I noticed that the front and back of the mat, where I usually place my feet and hand (like in downward facing dog) become much smoother than the rest of the mat and do not provide enough grip for some asanas. How can I make all of the mat surface have good grip again? [link] [comments] |
| Any advice for working on presence? Posted: 05 Jan 2021 05:13 PM PST Hi everyone, I've been practicing for a few years now and have recently been trying to work on remaining present and focused during my practice. I find my mind wanders A LOT recently especially during slower and more restorative flows. Any advice on how to keep me more present and aware of my movement and breath? Thank you so much in advance! | Recommendations for LONG yoga pants with pockets on Amazon Posted: 05 Jan 2021 01:14 PM PST I got a couple of yoga pants on Amazon, they are supposed to be long but they still go a couple inches above my ankle bone. I get it's a bit trendy nowadays but it gives me flashbacks for when I was the tallest kid and all my pants were too short. Any recommendation for fully long yoga pants, with pockets? I'm 5 ft 6in size small. I'm looking for non cotton so I can use them for running/hiking as well. Edit: not on Amazon but looks like Athleta has leggings with pockets and with a tall sizing 30" inseam option (as well as regular and short) [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 05 Jan 2021 06:13 AM PST All in the title. I am just a bit curious. For me, all begin 5/6 years ago. I began master's degree and my best friend ask me to go with her to a yoga classroom. I fall in love with yoga and since I practice in an irregular way. [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 05 Jan 2021 08:56 AM PST Hi people! I've recently started stretching out again in the evenings, with a lot of work on my hip flexors and general lower body flexibility, think pigeons pose and forward fold variations The issue is that I've gotten pretty kind of sore and shaky over the last couple of days and I'm wondering if it might be best to stop completely for a while or if I just should tone it down a notch (I do also try to do 1km runs twice a week and lunges, squats and burpees on the days between runs) Hope someone could give some advice! Kind regards [link] [comments] |
| Any advice on how to take my practice to the next level? Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:06 AM PST Do you guys have any tips on how I can take my yoga practice to the next level? I've practiced the basics last year, almost every day, and I can even sometimes hold a crow or wheel pose now. But I would love to do things like a headstand, handstand and split this year, and become more flexible. How did you guys get there? How often do I need to practice and what are the steps to work towards a goal? [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 05 Jan 2021 02:29 PM PST I got back into a regular yoga routine about 2 months ago and this has been my really on my mind lately. I am a 27 year old woman in decent shape but I swear I have the wrists of a 60-70 year old. Right before I started doing yoga again, I had a chronic pain in my left wrist, likely due to my job as a graphic designer. Luckily this went away quickly with regular yoga practice. However, since then I haven't seen much real improvement in my wrists. I can barely bend them to 45 degrees in prayer and they crack constantly. I assume this will have an effect on my ability to practise arm balances and handstands as well—not that this is the biggest deal as I get a lot of benefits from yoga without those. But I am also worried about aging and my wrists getting much worse than they currently are. Has anyone had a similar issue as me and were able to find significant ways to strengthen wrists or am I doomed? [link] [comments] |
