Question about cultural appropriation Posted: 24 Mar 2021 02:27 PM PDT Some background info about myself: Im a white dude in my early twenties, i started a daily practice about six months ago and im loving it! Due to the pandemic im not comfortable/able to go to classes so I watch Adriene videos and do solo practice. My question (mainly aimed towards Desi practitioners) is how can I avoid being culturally appropriative with my practice? I've seen Desi practitioners bring up this issue fairly often and I wouldnt ever want to make someone feel that I am misusing or profitting from a practice which doesnt belong to my culture. Im currently reading the Upanishads and am planning to read Patanjali's Yoga Sutras afterwards, but is there anything more that I should be doing other than educating myself on the spiritual practices of Yoga & the philosophical systems it grew out of? And are there any Desi teachers with online practices that I could follow as well? Sorry for the bombardnent of questions, I simply want to be as respectful as possible and give credit where it is due. With peace and love. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 05:50 PM PDT Hi I'm looking for exercise to do and follow, I'm wondering if yoga can make you lose weight? I'm looking to lose weight and get fit, is yoga the right exercise to do? Also is there an easy exercise app for yoga or youtube to follow for daily workout? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:44 PM PDT I've been doing yoga for two years now, and thanks to the pandemic, I've developed a nice at-home practice. I mostly just do my own thing based on what my body and mind need any given day rather than relying on videos that don't quite suit what I want. I dabble in yin, slow flow, or some kind of combination of the two the most consistently. I do use Down Dog on occasion when I don't want to think or plan too hard, or when I'm looking for something more specific. One thing I miss about one of the yoga classes I used to attend is how my teacher would often frame classes around the different seasons. Now that spring is upon me, I'm feeling the desire to move differently, but I feel like I'd benefit from some resources. I know I can Google it, but I'm curious if anyone feels similarly or has any seasonal ideas that work for them. Videos, poses, general principles, long personal ramblings all are welcome! Wife has horrible balance, wants to try yoga Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:38 PM PDT My wife wants to try yoga to help with her balance issues. Her feet end up in so much pain from trying to keep her balance. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |

Lower back cramps in Supine Twist? Posted: 24 Mar 2021 03:41 PM PDT Hi everyone, i'm new to yoga (3 weeks in) and I noticed that when I hold the supine twist to my left side I cramp towards the right side of my lower back. I dont get this on the other side and it happens without fail. Anyone else experience this or know what the cause may be?? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Wrist pain with reverse prayer Posted: 24 Mar 2021 11:52 AM PDT I've been working on my shoulder/arm flexibility for months, but still can't do the reverse prayer pose. The moment my palms connect, I immediately feel a stabbing pain in my right wrist and have to drop it. I want to be able to do this pose. How do I ease myself into it? [link] [comments] |
Concern over camel pose head positioning. Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:49 PM PDT I'm currently reading The Science of Yoga because I find the explinations of how all the muscles work together, anatomical views and such really cool! I went from enjoying it to being paranoid after this part regarding camel: "Dropping head back increases risk of vertebral artery damage and stroke." I've been guilty of doing this because I thought I was supposed to when instructors say relax your head back. Will I suffer any conseqeunces from it? I've only done variations of camel poses about 20 times now maybe or should I just avoid camel if I'm at a high risk for strokes and clotting? sorry for the dumb question, It just made me feel panicy and I'm still very new to yoga so I'm not too savy on everything. Can I create a vinyasa flow even if I'm still a beginner? Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:23 AM PDT Hello! I started practicing vinyasa yoga around a week ago and I really like it. For practice I use Youtube and the app Down Dog (students have free access to the premium version until July); the app is great but although it has some nice sequences and I'm guided through every moment, I'd like to experiment and incorporate something more creative and challenging (I'd also like to feel like the practice "belongs" to me). I was wondering, do I need to be on a intermediate/advanced level to try creating a flow? If not, is there a method I need to follow? Feel free to drop some tips, thank you in advance and have a great day! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Mar 2021 07:51 AM PDT I have been practicing yoga for a couple of months now and really getting into the swing of things. I bought a Jade Yoga mat which is super grippy (and I love)-but I'm finding that only during downward dog my hands begin to slip forward, no matter how much I send my weight back or fill the "space" between my shoulders. It may just be that I am a sweaty yogi but would like to invest in gloves. Those who wear them-which brand would you recommend? My wrist support is fine, I just want to stop sliding forward during positions. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:53 AM PDT When doing back bending poses where you grab your feet/ankles (bow, dancer, sugarcane, etc.) do you grab the inside of your foot or the outside? Do you do it differently for different poses, or the same? Why? For reference: I tend to flex my foot and grab my ankles. [link] [comments] |
Beginner question about forward flow and halfway lift Posted: 24 Mar 2021 06:35 AM PDT I started Yoga for the first time 3 days ago through the Down Dog app. I have never practised Yoga before and for now my body is not very flexible. Due to this, I am not able to bend a lot during the Forward Flow or Halfway Lift poses. So I wanted to know how I should practise these poses till my flexibility improves. Should I bend my knees to touch my feet or should I keep my legs straight and just bend as much as I can? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
