Ashtanga yoga: Are we supposed to practice in total silence? |
| Are we supposed to practice in total silence? Posted: 09 Apr 2021 05:46 AM PDT I realize this is a method that has been established and it seems like during all the led sequences I've watched, the practice is always conducted in silence. I know that both asana as well as the concepts of silence and stillness are important for cultivating the yogic state as well as helping push different forms of energy throughout the body and heal different chakras. However, as I have no teacher (the only available certified one in my city closed due to COVID), I almost always practice alone. When I do, the energy in the room feels different when there is music vs no music. I have done the practice silent before and tbh, I didn't enjoy it as much, but maybe that's the point! I know one of the eight limbs deals with overstimulation of the senses, so maybe this is Ashtanga's way of trying to teach me something? At the same time, I practice much better with music (they're always instrumentals) and I feel more in tune with my body. This is especially helpful when I practice late in the day (I tend to have less energy and move slower) or days when I'm sluggish. I'm curious as to how others practice and what you all think. I'm constantly learning, so I'm definitely open to the thought I'm doing this wrong and need to sit with the silence. What are your thoughts on this? [link] [comments] |
