32M slightly overweight and highly inflexible, where do I start with basic mobility exercises?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 10:30 AM PDT

I have always been very inflexible due to tight muscles, having a hard time relaxing them. While I attended Yoga classes a few years ago it slightly helped my flexibility (not more flexible, but less pain during Yoga poses).. I now really want to learn how to get more flexible to do daily things without too much trouble. I'm currently already working out 3 days a week so overcoming the (slight) overweight part in the upcoming 6 months. Where do I start with core mobility exercises?

probably 12 inches from toe touch

    Posted: 29 May 2021 10:05 PM PDT

I remember in 2009 a PT telling me my hamstrings are stupid tight / short. I can't straighten my leg past 45 degrees really. I don't even think is can do a sit and reach test since my back wouldn't sit straight (or bent) if my legs are straight... thus zero ability to reach.

I tried to stretch in college once but felt odd back pain after a few nights.I over did something and stopped. Is it reasonable to believe I can lengthen my hamstrings, how long to gain 12 inches in proper form. Or am I taking on risk? What's the risk of having a ridiculously tight back?

    Cheers

    Backbend training with prolapsed discs

    Posted: 29 May 2021 07:23 AM PDT

I got diagnosed with three lumbar prolapsed discs about 3 years ago (?). I've never really stretched or worked on my backbend beyond some mild conditioning exercises right now because I'm just a little scared. I'm also a pretty advanced pole dancer, but now the backbendless state I'm in is really hampering my progress. The pole dancing has actually given me enough core strength that I haven't gotten those crippling pain that I used to get when I was just beginning.

Has anyone had experience in training their backbend flexibility after being diagnosed with prolapsed discs? If so, what are the resources I should look for? I'm not looking to be ultra flexible, but some more flexibility than I have now will be much welcomed. I'm currently stretching shoulders so I can pretend my backbend looks better.

    Thanks!

Is it a "normal" pain: pancake trainning

Is it a "normal" pain: pancake trainning

    Hi :)

I've been trainning for achiving a "perfect pancake" for some time now

I usually do it sitting on a yoga block to encourage anterior pelvic tilt. Cause a block is a bit stiff and high, when I do the pancake exercices, my buttocks aren't touching the floor, which is obvisouly normal).

BUUUT I wanted to improve the how far foward I could go and tought of sitting on something smaller (I chose sand bags straps you can attached to the wrists/ankles) So I am still slightly raised but my buttocks are now touching the floor

The exercice went like usual. However once done with it and during the rest of the day, if I were to do specific moves (especially those which are involving posterior pelvic tilt such as bending over), I felt tender there: (red dots)

It is not a "pain" but it quite inconfortable. Also when I sliding frog, middle splits etc... I feel like it "blocks" at the location too, like I cannot spread wider.

So my question is, is this a "normal" stretching kind of "pain" regarding the location

Or is this a sign that I did it wrong (aka my anterior pelvic tilt was not enough) ?

    Thanks

Hello to whoever reading this! I've never been able to cross my legs as long as I can remember (8yr old). I have extremely tight hamstrings. I basically have a pretty sedentary lifestyle ( tech guy ) This has been a insecurity all my life because this is something I've seen a lot of ppl do and I couldnt with them. I've been mocked that I've become old and whatnot. I'm saving up to meet a physio. Please advise if I can correct this myself. Would be grateful!!

Who are the best mobility people on youtube/internet?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 01:07 PM PDT

I have been out of the game for many years and want to get back to being mobile. I am not trying to be able to do like scorpions or anything like that. I am looking more for sport mobility type stuff. Back when I was training hard Kelly Starrett was the king of this stuff. Is he still highly respected? Are there better people out there? Thank you.

Pain in groin during pancake / Side splits impossible?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 11:25 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I hope this doesn't go against the rules but it's not medical advice per say, I obtained the injury from stretching and it only bothers me whilst I am trying to stretch.

Some back story, I pulled my groin muscle (i think? The inside of my thigh) many years ago whilst doing some sort of side split stretch (cant remember as so long ago). Before it went ping I used to have a flat pancake.

Throughout the years I have pretty much given up with obtaining my side splits. Sometimes I would go for massages to see if that helps and I think it may have helped but flash forward to now and I am wanting to get serious with my flexibility again however I cannot do any side extensions without pain. I can barely sit in a straddle, doing front splits on the bad leg is a no go.

Does anyone have any experience or relate to this at all? Any suggestions or advice on getting some form of flexibility back when it comes to side split related things (sorry, not sure on the proper terminology!)

    Thank you.
