“Yoga is not proper exercise.” Posted: 29 May 2021 06:10 AM PDT EDIT: Thank you for all the comments and opinions on the topic, most of them made me feel a lot better about the whole situation. I'll keep doing yoga as my main form of exercise until I'll feel like incorporating something else and will do my best to ignore my family members' comments in the future. Again, thank you all ❤️ A little bit of context first: I made the mistake of telling my family I've been practicing yoga everyday for almost 2 months now and I received the above mentioned comment from one of my family members. Now, my family is pretty narrow minded which is why I've been avoiding telling them outright that I practice yoga as my main type of exercise. There is no way I'll be able to explain that I consider yoga much more than exercise and it has so much more meaning to me spiritually, but I wish I could express that yoga is, in fact, exercise. It has made me feel stronger than ever before, I'm actually building muscle for the first time in my life, my posture has improved significantly as well as my balance and I sometimes get a proper sweat in during my 40 min sessions. Also, my family expressed that one needs to do additional exercise along with yoga (lifting weights, running, HIIT, etc.) and that it cannot stand on its own. This is pretty much what my question is and since this community is really helpful and welcoming, I'm asking it: Do you consider yoga "proper exercise"? (I'm using air quotes because I firmly believe any type of exercise and movement you enjoy IS proper exercise, but you know. Apparently, my family doesn't share my beliefs) What do you think? And how could I potentionally express this to my family? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 May 2021 04:42 AM PDT I notice this especially when doing downward facing dog. My left foot can reach the ground, but my right cannot. It makes me wonder what I'm doing for my posture and muscles to be out of alignment [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 May 2021 04:38 PM PDT Recently I've gotten back into doing yoga through Adriene Mishler's Find What Feels Good app. She often does a savasana variation with the legs bent, feet on the ground as wide as the mat, allowing the knees to fall in together. The idea is that with the knees resting together, you can allow your body to completely relax. The trouble is my knees don't touch when I do that pose! I'm relatively flexible, but I've been using Adriene's content for years without ever being able to rest in this pose. Are there any cues or adjustments that might help get my knees to rest together? Could it just be an anatomical thing where some bodies just can't do this variation? This has been bugging me for a long time and I couldn't find information online to help. [link] [comments] |
ISSA Yoga Teacher Cert - Thoughts? Posted: 29 May 2021 02:09 PM PDT What do you guys think of the ISSA Yoga Teacher certification? It's not Yoga Alliance, but I have the chance to add it on to a personal training cert package I'm doing and I was thinking it might be a good fit. I've been doing yoga for 20 years and been an off and on personal trainer (always certified) for 15. Could I work at yoga studios with it? Would you trust someone with it? https://www.issaonline.com/certification/certified-yoga-instructor/ [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 May 2021 09:37 AM PDT Has anyone tried Qigong or Taichi for energy practice along with yoga? I'm curious about which teachers you follow if you have and your experiences! [link] [comments] |
Having some trouble, need help Posted: 29 May 2021 06:22 PM PDT Slightly NSFW so you've been warned Met a girl before that pandemic that was pretty cool, moved in together, started doing yoga because I had nothing else to do. Not a fan of the yoga honestly but she's alright so I have to go to classes now but I have a bit of an issue. Nearly eery single time, I have a noticeable erection to the point where I wouldn't feel comfortable going to a class because I would just make other people uncomfortable. I don't know why it's happening, I'd like it stop. I was hoping someone might've gone through something similar and could help out? My only idea at the moment is maybe just increased blood flow because I think that's something yoga does. It doesn't seem connected to any certain pose and it happens if I'm with her or alone so I don't know what else could be causing it [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 May 2021 07:25 AM PDT What is your favorite bolster brand? Looking to buy a rectangular bolster to elevate hips while sitting. I bought a few bolsters once from Yoga Warehouse and I'm not a fan (smelled weird, over stuffed & hard). I was looking at HuggerMugger and Manduka…wondering if those ever go on sale? Posted: 29 May 2021 01:17 PM PDT I recently got my crow pose, but now whenever I try I just can't do it. Does anyone know why this is? I did it consistently for a couple of days, and then suddenly couldn't. [link] [comments] |
A yoga teacher suggested me Pranayama Posted: 29 May 2021 10:15 AM PDT ...to lower my stress and to lower the inflammation in the body. I suffer of endometriosis, two surgeries behind my back, and I feel is important to find techniques that help calm the body and the mind. I already do beginner Vinyasa and Yin yoga almost everyday, and I love it. I have a Pranayama course from this on line teacher, and as soon as possible I will try the first lesson. I really don't know what Pranayama is, apart from basic things (that breathing is very important, you should practice with empty stomach) I have a book but looks like it's advanced, it doesn't explain in a simple way what Pranayama is. Do you have a tip on a simple book for beginners? I would like to know more about the philosophy behind it before or while practicing. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
After some yoga sessions lately I have paced around and let my body shake. Posted: 29 May 2021 07:25 AM PDT I've been shaking after yoga sessions lately. Just walking around doing motions with my body, just letting it happen. Is this releasing trauma? [link] [comments] |
Struggling in forward fold with head-to-knee pose. Any tips? Posted: 29 May 2021 05:02 AM PDT I've noticed that I get neck pain when trying to round out my back/neck going in to head-to-knee pose from a sitting forward fold. Do you all have any tips on how I could work to mitigate that? Is that normal for beginners? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
