- [COMP] I’ve been dealing with a shoulder/bicep injury for way over a year now. There’s still quite a few poses I cannot do until fully healed, but I am so excited to get back to Bird of Paradise! It’s nowhere near perfect... but hey, progress!

I just touched the ground for the first time in my life Posted: 27 May 2021 02:19 PM PDT I've always had terrible flexibility. Even as a kid I was bound up and stiff, I always thought that was just how my body worked. My hips and back had been especially tight, so I started intermittently following YouTube yoga workouts a few weeks ago. I've never once been able to touch the ground with my legs straight, until today. This probably isn't a big deal for most, but it's something I thought I'd never be able to do. Thanks, yoga! Can anyone speak to what yoga has done for their mental health? Posted: 27 May 2021 09:56 AM PDT Trigger warning: trauma, abuse, Hey all Currently battling some individual and relationship issues, and have been reopening childhood wounds. I'm contemplating taking up yoga with my significant other, purely because multiple creditable and reliable scientific studies have shown that yoga can assist in PTSD recovery. Can anyone speak to this? Has yoga helped you through trauma recovery? If you started yoga as a journey for your mental health, was it something you were skeptical about? Have your opinions changed? Any insights and perspectives are greatly appreciated Edit: we both are seeing therapists individually for our issues, so this would be additional help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 May 2021 04:15 PM PDT We are all limited by time and there is only a certain amount you can spend every day on activities for the betterment of health. So, which one is the best. Let's have a comparison between the two to understand. Obviously, both methods are proven over a period of time, the prior more than the later but still. Hence, both have their own associated benefits. [link] [comments] |
How to teach yoga for all bodies? Posted: 27 May 2021 12:09 PM PDT I'm in my 200-RYT training right now. The school is online (all of them near me are, due to covid). I thought it would be fine to take online. But im really struggling to learn how to teach ALL bodies. I was teaching my boyfriend a few poses last night, just basics like child's pose, down dog, up dog, etc. This is the first time I've ever instructed anyone. He's a big guy, and I'm very small. So I only know what i feel in MY body, which obviously doesn't work when you're teaching. I thought it would be easier, since I'm good at modifications (at least, I thought I was). But it didn't go so well. He couldn't fold forward in child's pose because his belly was in the way. I had him bring his knees further apart, which fixed it. Great! However.. In downward facing dog, his back was arched. I instructed him to bend his knees as much as he needed to for better spinal alignment. After a few adjustments, he got there, but his arms were shaking trying to hold himself up. It was more of a workout than a stretch for him. A similar thing happened in upward facing dog. He was more stable and comfortable when activating his arms and using arm strength to hold himself up. If he relaxed his arms and utilized his core, the pose was very difficult. We figured out how to make these poses work for him, but it took a long time for me to figure it out. How the hell am I going to teach a whole class if I can't teach one person? It took us probably 30 minutes for 4 individual poses. I feel like a failure before I've even started. TL;DR how do I efficiently teach yoga to people with much different body types when all I know is what I feel in my own body? [link] [comments] |
Pidgeon vs Swan and other Yin conundrums Posted: 27 May 2021 02:28 PM PDT So I'm reading Bernie Clark's guide to yin yoga. Very interesting, it goes into the philosophy and into how different types of stress affect the muscles versus ligaments. Then I got to the list of asanas. A lot of them seem to be exactly the same as poses you'd see in a vinyasa class, but with different names. Dragon vs lizard, snail vs plow, swan vs Pidgeon. Is this just your typical different folks have different names for the same pose? Or is it considered to be a different pose if you do it without warming up and hold it longer? [link] [comments] |

How long into your practice did you start to notice improvement? Posted: 27 May 2021 04:46 PM PDT New yogi here! Curious to see when improvement starts to happen? Been practicing for a bit and still struggling with basic poses. Even down dog is challenging! Lol [link] [comments] |
Suggestions for yoga for upper back? Posted: 27 May 2021 09:42 AM PDT I've become aware for about a month or so now that there is what I would describe as tightness in my upper back between my shoulder blades and spine, especially on my right side, which can sometimes feel like pain, especially when sitting upright. I've felt as though it was going to "crack" in specific poses, particularly forward fold and extended forward fold variations, and it always feels like if I could just get it to actually "crack" it would feel relieve whatever it is. However, I haven't had luck, and I was wondering if there is any pose that might help or if I just gotta keep deepening my forward fold until I finally get it? Does anyone else experience this or have any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 May 2021 09:39 AM PDT Ok guys sorry for the semi-gross topic, but I'm at my wits end here. After takes things slower to start off for a year r two I'm starting to get more serious about my practicing and more advanced with my movements. Problem I'm facing is that I'm working a good sweat when I do longer practices and after trying different mats still haven't found a good way to stay up without slipping on my own sweat during positions such as wheel, bridge, wildthing etc. Any advice to try and solve this issue? I've tried several mats the best setup I've found so far is two mats (one thicker which I prefer as I'm injury prone) and one thin grippy mat to help that stay in place. The grippy mats I've found so far are too thin and lead to lots of discomfort in the handstands/one handed positions. [link] [comments] |

Weights to keep yoga towel down outside? Posted: 27 May 2021 12:28 PM PDT During the pandemic, I have been taking my practice outside which has been lovely except for the wind blowing my towel all over the place! I feel like i am constantly adjusting it! Does anyone use anything to keep theirs down outside that they would suggest? [link] [comments] |
