[COMP] One year flexibility transformation! Slow but steady

Happy 9 months of yoga to me! My brain and my body are so much more flexible and healthy

    You can always come back

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 04:57 AM PDT

I'm new-ish to yoga. I believe the benefits of daily practice in my bones. I have a few personal issues that make my life and consistency difficult. Last year I did about 3 straight weeks of yoga, missed one day, and my good habit crashed and burned.

This year, with what I considered a major life change, I started up my daily practice again. I missed maybe four days in a period of 8 weeks. I felt on top of the world. Then one day I woke up with so little energy I didn't practice yoga.

I was down on myself and felt like a tiny aircraft running out of fuel, the way they sputter and try very hard but can't quite stay in the air. I missed 3/7 days last week, and then I've missed 4/7 days this week.

You know what though? And maybe you don't need to hear this as much as I needed to say it because this is r/yoga and most people here, I assume, are practicing daily. Yoga DOESN'T CARE. Yoga will be there if you want to practice all the live long day. Yoga will be there if you want to practice in the morning, at night, consistently, or sporadically. Yoga isn't judging you. You're judging you.

You can always come back and you can always start again.

If you can't afford a yoga class...

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 07:39 AM PDT

Talk to the studio and teachers... We understand and most are willing to help.

I've traded classes for sweeping the floor, helping me lug in gear, if I'm doing a more informative based class, the students I use to demo the postures are given free access.

I had one gentleman that brought me food in exchange for classes..

The worst that can happen is they say no, but definitely give it a shot.

Severe foot cramping when doing standing poses, help!

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 06:13 PM PDT

Hello all, so I'm really struggling with standing poses. My feet start cramping really badly after a few minutes and it's so frustrating.

Has anyone else struggled with this? Any suggestions about what I can do?

I'll add that I'm considerably overweight, I'm sure that doesn't help, but unfortunately that can't be fixed overnight (though I'm well on my way!).

I'm hoping someone else has experienced the same and can give me some advice. Thanks!

Do yall experience pins and needles during some poses? I do sometimes then adjust myself then it sometimes goes away. I just want to know how yall modify your poses for when pins and needles on the hands and feet are predominant.

How do you recover/grow from days with difficult/discouraging practices?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 04:29 PM PDT

Yesterday I had a yoga practice that felt life changing. Today I couldn't get out of my head and was fidgeting the entire time. I'm feeling discouraged but trying to remember this is natural and I'm only human.

How do you get through these days? Any mantras, specific poses or practices, or even encouraging words would be helpful.

    Thanks y'all!

    Tight back on certain poses

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 04:03 PM PDT

I've been focusing on poses to help with my back pain and while I feel the stretch in the moment, during shavasana I feel a tightness in my lower back that I have to concentrate and breathe through to melt away. Plough and shoulder stand in particular flare it up but I enjoy these poses - any advice? Also, any suggestions that aren't cat/cow to help with this would be much appreciated! :')

Headstands while on your period? Does anyone have information on this?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 08:22 AM PDT

I have heard that I shouldn't do inversions while on my period. But I've heard conflicting reasons as to why or if it's important, some things just say pay attention to how you feel... Sometimes I find myself really craving them. Inversions help my headaches and neck tension. I've avoided them these past two days but it feels silly tbh. What are your thoughts, experience, research?

Sorry for those that are excluded from this question, if there is a more appropriate place to ask please let me know.

    Feeling of Inflation During Shavasana

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 09:52 AM PDT

I have got this feeling a number of times after finishing a yoga routine. It usually occurs when I'm all done, in shavasana, laying down and not moving. I have not been able to feel it consistently though, only select sessions. I get this overwhelming feeling of being inflated or simply larger than I am. My arms and legs feel so large it's like they have a diameter of over a foot! Along with this, my bones feel very thin and deep inside of my muscles and body. This happens everywhere from the top of my head all the way to my toes but is most noticeable in my arms and torso. Has anyone experienced something similar? Is it possibly increased blood flow to the blood vessels and less to the organs?

    Yoga after shoulder surgery

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 07:07 AM PDT

I had a major shoulder surgery a couple weeks ago. I have a connective tissue disorder and after repeated dislocations and a severe labral tear, I had a reconstruction to repair the joint and tighten the tendons. I had this same surgery on the other shoulder a couple years ago. After that first surgery, I got really into yoga during my recovery, because it was an impact-free way to strengthen and stretch the joint. Now I'm many months away from a normal practice again, but I miss my morning yoga - mentally and physically. Does anybody have suggestions for asanas that would stretch and strengthen my lower body and back without straining my shoulders? I know it is kind of unlikely, but worth a shot to ask!

Curious about Kundalini and its origins

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 09:57 PM PDT

I didn't want to post this in r/kundalini because I'm unsure if this post would get flagged because I'm trying to learn about the practice and evolution of Kundalini yoga, which includes questions about Yogi Bhajan. I hope this is acceptable here!

As a former dancer, I've been introduced to Kundalini yoga here and there to supplement my training. I'm writing here because I don't have a concrete understanding, nor a consistent practice, and I am really curious to hear from those who devout their energy practice to Kundalini. I am trying to understand the practice in its historical context and the evolution to modern-day society. I am also trying to understand the difference between Kundalini as an energy practice versus Kundalini yoga. Are they different? If so, what makes them different? Is there a line that is crossed to cultural appropriation? It's not rare to come across a Kundalini class being offered in a major city if you're browsing through yoga studios. How can you assess the authenticity of the class and does the business aspect of it shift the practice?

Why is Yogi Bhajan the face of Kundalini Yoga? Has the practice lost touch with the fundamental teachings? How has he influenced the West? Where is the conversation that includes Maharaj Virsa Singh? How has the narrative of the lineage shifted throughout the years, especially in the 60s & 70s? When and how did Sant Hazar Singh become central in Bhajan's story? How do Guru Jagat fit and the modern day practice fit into this? Is 3HO credible? What about stories we hear from Pamela (Premka) Dyson? I find it all incredibly fascinating to me and I have so many other questions.

From what I see online from the current people who share their practices of Kundalini, it is a beautiful practice and I witness a lot of growth in these individuals. But I wonder, can one authentically practice Kundalini without recognizing the history?

What's the name of asana that involves laying down and keeping legs at say 30-45 degrees in the air? Doing it for past 15 days and I actually feel muscles changing in the thighs. Don't know what it's called though

Any yoga guru or acharya in this group ?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 11:10 AM PDT

I know that most gurus and acharyas are so traditional that they probably have just recently heard of Facebook, Reddit forums are a distant story! Looking forward to see if anyone out here is one of the above and reading this. Do share your story such as origins, how did you begin and when, your lineage, about your family tree, education, tradition, favourite Sadhna, your own gurus name and lineage, where are you based, favourite shastr, favourite historical guru and anything else that comes to mind

    Non-Flow Beginner Tutorials?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 10:08 PM PDT

Hi there! As the title states, I'm a beginner. I currently can't afford in person classes where I live (hopefully in the future) and mainly practice using video tutorials as guides. I'm having a lot of trouble with practicing through flows - even slower types because I often feel like I'm doing it wrong, and subsequently fearing I will injure myself.

Basically i'm looking to learn poses without having to follow a flow - half the time i'm just trying to keep up rather than listening to my body.

Can anyone recommend some resources to learn correct alignment?

    Thanks!
