I think I've gained weight since doing yoga, and I love that Posted: 03 Jun 2021 04:31 PM PDT TW: eating disorder I've had anorexia nervosa and body image issues for several years. I'm much better off now, near weight-restored and more psychologically stable, but there's still not much to me physically. I started doing daily yoga a few months ago, partly for the mental/spiritual benefits and also as a way to exercise my body without a focus on calorie burning. Since then, my legs have developed muscle where there was just skin, there's definition to my abs that isn't from bone, my body has a strong grace that I'd been hiding from myself. I don't own a scale (doctor's orders) but I can tell, the weight is coming back and it's muscle. That makes me feel so good. For the first time in years, I feel confident in my body! Posted: 03 Jun 2021 01:13 PM PDT Hi! I'm not sure if this has been posted here before, but I just found out I have early carpel tunnel syndrome in my left wrist. I'd say I'm at an intermediate level when it comes to my yoga practice and enjoy practicing inversions (which kinda blows since I have this new diagnoses). Anyway I was wondering if anyone can share some tips that I can use or poses/flows that I can practice without being harsh to my wrists. I also struggle with motivation to get on my mat sometimes, and have found that if I am practicing towards a goal pose, I am inclined to practice more often. So if anyone has a tricky pose that will take time to practice mastering that doesn't involve inversions I would love to know. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

My yoga teacher is body-shaming me Posted: 02 Jun 2021 10:35 PM PDT I was advised to also share this in this thread, so I want to state that while knowing that this may not be the most fitting place for it, but I just wanted to know from other instructors potentially how to deal with this situation I recently took up a yoga class after wanting to try one for the longest time, and I figured that joining at the same time that my studio was reopening for covid as the same time as everyone else with other potential new people, would alleviate my nerves since it was like a fresh start for everyone, and this was my first ever experience with yoga. As of writing this, I have taken six classes, and I really enjoyed the classes I took so far However, one of the girls from the group informed me that our instructor made a post about some of the newer students and me without my consent, and she showed me a comment she posted on FaceBook that mentioned my weight in a joke that wasn't funny when talking about some of the newer students, and I don't want to take classes with her anymore for obvious reasons I wasn't aware of the post until she showed it to me, and I'm planning to go to the studio about it before my next class that I'm likely not taking anyway. However, I want to ask how I should go about it, since the post she showed me wasn't a public post (only shown to her friends, not public), and she didn't want to send it to me either or be involved I have no issue going by myself, but as of right now, I don't feel comfortable taking classes there anymore and would like a refund for my set of classes that I purchased. I no longer plan to attend this studio because of the fallout of having her stay or be replaced, would probably be weird either way, and I don't want to deal with it However, I feel that they'd believe me even if I didn't have the post to show as proof, but in terms of a refund, that is my main concern. I don't know if they would give it to me without proof, and the girl who showed me didn't want me to take a screenshot or send it to me or be involved at all. I'm hoping that one of the other instructors maybe follows my instructor and has access to see the post as one of her friends, but I just wanted to ask other potential instructors how to best handle this before going in TL;DR: My yoga teacher posted something about my weight on FaceBook without my permission, and I am going to talk to the studio about it, but wanted to ask how's the best way to do so beforehand [link] [comments] |
I need suggestions for bras/ tops for yoga that are good for curvy women. Posted: 03 Jun 2021 07:46 AM PDT I can't for the life of me find anything that's loose enough around the band or big enough to hold my breasts. Any suggestions would be really appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2021 02:48 PM PDT Just wanted to share how excited I am to be starting to work on headstand! I love shoulder stand to the moon and back but feel ready for the next thing. Tried headstand for the first time yesterday and didn't get very far but it's a start. Thanks to all of you for posting your progress and inspiring me! Advice welcome. [link] [comments] |
Loved my first yoga class...it's all I want to do, but want it to be enough for my goals Posted: 03 Jun 2021 07:16 PM PDT All my life, I've wanted a yoga practice. After a brutal 2020, I finally went back to a studio last week for a hot yoga class and loved it. The first class was a 75 minute flow, pretty intense. Constant movement, seemed pretty all encompassing. And then the second class I took a Bikram (not called Bikram) class. The 26 meditative poses. And I just loved that too. We did a breath of fire and I just cried and cried and cried after. I did it. I was terrible I think. I'm my own harshest critic. Classes were packed, but I was never adjusted. I didn't talk in-depth with any of the teachers, but they did say good job after. Nothing crazy. I've been really worried about my foundations. I guess I'm too assume all my poses were good unless I wad adjusted? Hard to tell. I did get some good feedback on commending me for taking breaks. So I think there was an eye on me. Anyway, it kicked my butt. Both classes. In different ways. And I just deeply loved it. And that's saying something. I hate working out. I used to do HIIT and it carved up my knees and legs, to the point I still feel it today. I don't feel sore pain after these classes. I'm tired and wobbly during class, but I guess I don't feel a huge burn. But, I think I'm doing well. It's hard to gauge what feels right and wrong since I run myself so hard with intensive workouts (pre-COVID), that pain is almost an indicator for me. But, I only planned to go 3x a week and I've just bumped it up to 5 this and next week. I guess for body goals. I want to transform my body. I'm 5'9 M and never been overweight, but never in shape. Maybe 175. I'm just kind of flabby with no muscle. I'm wondering if doing the "Bikram" classes and the more intensive flows will suffice. Can I just do that? I don't want to be ripped, but I want my body to change. I want it to be more flexible, less achy, but just thin toned muscle and a flat stomach. I know a flat stomach is mostly in the kitchen, so I use Weight Watchers also to track calories. I'm not a big guy at all, but kind of wide chest, love handles, no definition. But....I want to do this like every day. I love it so much. But, I also know obviously there aren't weights or heavy cardio. Guess I'm wondering if 4-5x a week of around 3 flows and 2 bikram-like classes can do the trick? And how soon I can begin to see results in my body after. I know that's not the point of yoga, but I'm just curious kind of what the path looks like if I pursue this. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2021 06:26 PM PDT What flow do yall recommend from teachers online? Some individuals are far more complicated than the average person. Refferals for everything, told lies, and overall wait times are insane. I could have really used therapy last year and was told to wait 1-2 months. I am of the mindset to just take an edible and tough out the bull shit of the system that takes all your spirit and then expects you to get back up. I'd rather just focus on a simple and challenging muscle strengthening flow to legitimately help with very real neck, back, and jaw problems. Whilst, many of you may have much money, good job provided healthcare, others rely on pandemics to have healthcare and do nothing with it simply because the system takes from you. I find yoga is realistically a method to help especially when the system takes so long to have basic mental healthcare checks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:30 PM PDT Over the past year I have been dealing with a chronic condition that makes me unable to have a full range of motion in my arm /shoulder. Due to this impediment I can only very simple upper body yoga poses that dont rely on upward or extended arm positions as well as minimum weight being placed on the arm. (Ie downward dog is to much range of motion and puts weight on the shoulder joint) I have found a few resources online that have allowed me to continue practicing Yoga. By allowing my lower back, hips and legs to release some of the tension they recieve my overall condition has improved. I am looking for videos that will allow me to continue practicing and progressing (without doing the same thing every day) Minor upper range of motion is good! It'll help me in the long run, but not to much. I have 3 videos I currently enjoy doing without pain. If anyone wants a reference I can add the links. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Feet turn out when jumping forward from down dog Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:41 AM PDT I am a fairly experienced yoga practitioner, but some of my my flexibility and strength limitations really bug me. When I am in downward facing dog and the instructor cues to walk or jump forward, I am able to jump to my hands but my feet splay out when I land. Any thoughts as to why? [link] [comments] |
shoulder pain on thread the needle? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:38 AM PDT Hey so basically, my shoulder is injured in some way (god knows how, I havent eeven been working out in ages, I think maybe just due to bad desk posture...) and whenever I do the thread the needle pose, my shoulder gets super painful. Is there a similar stretch that doesnt destroy my shoulder in the same way? [link] [comments] |
