    [COMP] First time trying Astavakrasana

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:31 AM PDT

[COMP] Yesterday, I mentioned I held my first headstand. Today, I got pics. Held the pose over 1 minute, 3 separate times. I have so much to learn, but I am feeling so incredibly empowered. Yoga has changed my life.

    Confidence

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 11:22 AM PDT

Just wanted to share this today.

    TMI: poop

My daughter has been having some medical issues that have led to her having to do a full colon cleanse. She's 5 yrs old and for a little background: When we decided to potty train her, we talked to her about it and the next day she woke up and said, "I'm not wearing anymore diapers" and went straight to underwear with zero accidents, even at night.

Well, she is taking a lot of medicine to flush her out and she pooped herself twice with 30 minutes. It completely wrecked her confidence. I asked her if she wanted to wear a pull-up (they are her little brother's who is taking his sweet time with potty training). It took a lot of talking and she agreed to do it as a precaution. She was moving around very awkwardly and had her shoulders slumped and just looked really defeated. It killed me. So, I pulled out our yoga mats after putting her brother in his room for nap. She perked right up. We picked some poses to do together and talked about each one. It brought on a complete 180. She's currently reading to her baby sister and looks as confident as ever. So glad to have this in our life!

Quote by the legendary T. Krishnamacharya

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:26 PM PDT

I have been a great fan of the great yogi T. Krishnamacharya. He is also referred to as the "Father of modern yoga" and was the guru to great yoga teachers like Indra Devi, K. Pattabhi Jois, B. K. S. Iyengar, Srivatsa Ramaswami and A. G. Mohan. He was also the inventor of Vinyasa.

I wanted to share this famous quote of his with you all because it is very special to me.

Where is the delusion when truth is known?

Where is the disease when the mind is clear?

Where is death when the Breath is controlled?

    Therefore surrender to Yoga.

Every time I sit to meditate, this quote fills me up with great intent and motivates me to pursue Yoga more keenly.

Best Mics for Outdoor + Online Yoga Teachers

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 04:22 PM PDT

    Hey yall,

I'm a new yoga teacher, and I'm mainly doing classes online via zoom. However, soon I'm gonna start hosting outdoor classes at a garden nearby.

I'm looking for a wireless headset for my online classes that will stay on as I do yoga. If the headset is noise canceling, that'd be even better! I'm also looking for a headset that connects to a speaker for my outdoor venues.

If anyone has any recommendations for headsets they use for teaching yoga, please let me know! I truly appreciate it! Also, if anyone has any recs for how to block wind from microphones, that'd be super great too.

    Thanks!!

New Manduka Pro mat! With a anti slip treatment success story and Jade Harmony comparison.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 10:36 AM PDT

TL;DR at the bottom. So I felt bad getting a new mat when I have a super grippy Jade that I love, but I wanted something a bit more burly and easier to clean. I was able to get the pro for $40 so how could I say no!

    anti slip

So I wanted to try the. mat before doing anything to it to understand the "so slippery!" hype and wow. One down dog was enough. I threw it out in the sun and sprinkled salt on it. I didn't know if the salt is supposed to be an abrasive or break it down chemically so after a while I lightly misted it with water and left it. I decided this probably wasn't doing anything.

I had read on this sub about using baking soda and vinegar which I've have great luck on other surfaces with. I dumped a ton of baking soda on my mat and, working one side to the other, I splashed vinegar to activate the reaction and scrubbed with an old t shirt. I then left the remaining on paste for around 30 minutes before using my watering can to scrub a little more as I washed everything off.

After drying my mat off it is now super tacky and sticky!! Success! Thanks Reddit, we did it!

    Jade Comparison

I got the Pro in lieu of the ProLite since it's the thickest of the three (6 mm vs 4.7 mm). This helped me justifying new mat as I thought I would use it for home restorative classes, as well as outside (Jade and dirt... that's a no from me), while using the Jade for studio classes and home vinyasas.

The pro is much denser and firm feeling even though it's thicker. This means balances poses feel a lot easier on it. Unlike the sticking and sinking in I get on the harmony, the pro feels more floor like!but tacky if that makes sense. I honestly think for restorative classes I will layer my Jade on top of the pro because I love the cushy feel of my Jade. This surprised me because I was thinking thicker mat = better for restorative. While I do like some extra knee cushion on the harmony for some restorative poses (most vinyasas move fast enough that I'm fine), I was surprised to prefer the harmony here.

I love the extra 2" of width I get on my pro. Makes me feel luxurious even though it isn't necessary. I don't get super sweaty and I don't enjoy hot yoga so I'm sorry that I cannot comment of how the mats would perform if you have damp hands.

I think that I will like the pro for more athletic and balancey flows, and the Jade for more out of the box slow indulgent flows if that makes sense.

TL;DR: vinegar and baking soda works great to break in your mat, the Harmony and pro are super different mats. The harmony is softer and stickier, the pro is firmer and tackier.

Asking for help: Has Yoga been helpful in your life in regards to trauma?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:40 PM PDT

Disclaimer: I am currently working with a psychologist who is specialized in somatic experiencing and trauma, among other things. I have also been meditating in the zen tradition for about 8 years.

I currently suffer from trauma due to multiple causes (mainly a chronic autoimmune disease that was undiagnosed for several years and has impacted both my physical and mental health). Despite having improved my emotional and mental wellbeing, I still feel that life is a struggle. And despite having a routine of meditation every morning and being in tune with my physical sensations, I do feel like I do not take care of my body through exercise (I barely workout).

I have read that Yoga can be good for people who have suffered from trauma, but it would be very helpful if someone could share their experiences with me. I still feel many days that there is a part of me that is fundamentally broken. Thank you.

A question about a new TPE smelly mat.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:52 AM PDT

    Greetings, I'm a noob yogi.

bought a mat that feels great. it is made from TPE and when I opened it it had a very strong smell of chemicals or what not. I read that in warm places it can emit some gasses and it was in my warm father warehouse sealed in the box for a few days. I put outside for a few hours and the smell was gone, I also washed it with soap to be safe.

Is that a problem? I am a health paranoid.

Thank you to all and have a great day.
