    Consciousness

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 03:34 PM PDT

Whenever I hit 40 minutes of meditation I feel like my brain is being massaged. But I think it's my consciousness expanding and closing. When I let go of a thought, my awareness expands, if I focus on a specific thought, it gets smaller.

I find listening to stories on audiobook, while focusing on my breath, more effective than ANY other form of meditation! It allows me to achieve a level of transcendence that nothing else does! What are your thoughts on this?

    Strange experience of letting go

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 09:54 PM PDT

I woke up, and got the impulse to try something i had gotten close to before, but ever actually managed to go completley through with. It's a bit hard to explain, but ill do my best. The challenge has been allowing a specific feeling. It feels like letting go of everything, surrendering all attachments in this physical world, and just trusting that it's gonna be alright. It feels very new, extremely naked, pretty scary, and intense. I had to let go of tension in my shoulders, stomach and face before i managed to get there. And at the same time as i progressed in intensity of the feeling, and allowed to let go of more and more, there was this combination of sound and sensation in my head like a frequency humming, «wub wub wub wub..» that went faster and faster as i progressed. At the end it became so fast it sounded more like a continous peep, or the ringing of a flash grenade. It was very strage hearing the sound so clearly in a sober state. (Although i had just woken up) Not knowing what would happen on the other end of the experience it was kinda scary letting go enough to let the sound progress, as i feared i could let go of my entire life, realizing everything had been fake, just waking up from a coma or in a car accident or something. The experience wash kind of magic mushroom trip-esque, and left me feelig very 'in the moment' with all sounds feeling much closer/louder/clearer. That's pretty much all there is to it, have you had a similar experience? Does anyone know if theres a word for this? Know of any resources talking about it? Please let me know :)

    I'm a beginner, where do I start?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 06:49 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I've just recently decided to start meditating to hopefully help with some of my mental struggles and hopefully at some point 'find myself' as they say. Any tips or common beginner mistakes? Any techniques I should start with? Would appreciate any advice to help me get going with it all.

Back pain distracts me and stops me from sinking deep into meditation.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 10:40 PM PDT

The title states the basic problem I have. Essentially, sitting up straight is extremely painful for me. I have large breasts and a lack of muscles in my back (I am working on building those muscles of course and I do plan on getting a reduction surgery as soon as I can.)

But until then - would it be okay to lay down to meditate? Some sources say that it's a bad idea as it will stop you from focusing? But I feel as if the back pain is a much bigger obstacle for me, as my brain is constantly quietly cursing, in constant pain, unable to focus on anything else.

Is laying down a bad idea?

Does anyone else experience this when meditating?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 08:59 PM PDT

This has happened once before seemingly randomly unless I was meditating unknowingly, but often times happens when I meditate. I'll feel as if my body is moving back and forth, phasing through my bed and rocking like I'm laying down in a rocking chair-bed thing, if that makes sense.

Another way I could explain it is that when I was a kid and taking a bath, I'd sometimes move the water back and forth like a small wave. That's exactly what it felt like except my body felt like that wave. It only seems to happen when I meditate laying down too or if I'm falling asleep. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this and why it may happen?

What's the difference between mindfullness and meditation?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 12:24 AM PDT

Having a bit of a hard time to understand the differences here.

The way i perceive it, mindfullness, is when one engages with something on full awareness. When one won't do things passively, but actively.

Meditation seems like the practice of it,without engaging with something specific. Just letting go. Dettaching from any kind of thing.

    Is that correct?

Is the goal of meditation to develope an effective pop up blocker for negative thoughts?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 07:41 PM PDT

I feel like I see a lot of posts on here where people want to give up after practicing for an extended period of time due to them reaching a state of hyperawareness, but not using that state to identify and regulate negative thoughts.

    Gtummo

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 01:18 AM PDT

Hello, I am been meditating for a while now and I came across Tummo. It's this technique that allows you to increase the temperature from the little knowledge I know. My question is that I encountered a video(if you don't trust me look up Sathya Gtummo egg on youtube) and I was wondering if it was legit. The video shows a man heating up eggs with his hand. I looked up Sathya tummo but I get these weird websites. if this is not the right place to post I would like it if you could tell me where to get more info.

What’s the difference between meditation and avoidance or indifference?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 05:18 AM PDT

Sometimes I feel like having a long meditation practice makes me avoidant of or indifferent to my problems. I've been that way before meditating, but somehow being aware of my avoidance isn't always helpful. Are there any changes in view which might help my practice?

    How to make others happy?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 12:46 AM PDT

I've done some research, but probably not enough.
I'm always stuck on third step
    1. "Love is the ultimate and the highest goal to which man can aspire... The salvation of man is through love and in love." – Victor Frankl
    2. Love comes from understanding. There's no love without understanding.
    3. Love is the wish for others to be happy and to have the causes of happiness.

From what I read I only get tips on how to be happy, but not how to make others happy.
    1. How to make others happy?
    2. Should I make others happy or only wish for others to be happy?
    3. Does short term happiness things matter, like making someone laugh, smile, intrigued etc.?
    4. Is trying to help others BETTER than making others laugh, enjoy an experience etc.?
    5. Should I try to become happy (for ex. by meditating) BEFORE trying to make others happy?

    Advice/Opinions?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 07:55 PM PDT

I've recently been trying to build the habit of meditating. I only really do it twice a week since those are my days off and i feel more comfortable doing it in a quiet, empty house during the day (usually after my morning workouts) I do listen to meditations and try to follow them before i go to sleep at night but always end up falling asleep during it. Is there any benefit in the way im going about this process?

Dopamine Detox forced me to sit with my emotions

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 07:50 AM PDT

Recently I did a dopamine detox. I noticed that it forced me to sit and reevaluate my own emotions and what I was doing.

In a life with so many digital screens distracting us I feel like its powerful to not only meditate,

but to cut out distractions as well.

    Recently I have done this:

    1. Eliminate Porn + Drugs
    2. Tv/entertainment/socialmedia/anything that involves a screen - 5 hours per week
    3. Alcohol - once per month
    4. Junk food - one cheat day per week, and limited to 1-2 meals for that day
    5. Caffeine every other day

Things that have been so hard for me to motivate myself to do like go out and socialize have been so easy when I accept boredom and don't distract myself with my phone.

    This has changed my life

I’ve been meditating daily for 4 years and still feel like a beginner.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 10:32 PM PDT

I love meditation and it greatly benefits my day outside of practicing. But I think back to when I first started practicing and how I had these ideas of reaching enlightened and grandiose meditative states if I kept with it for years (these ideas were based on books about samatha and Zen Buddhism). I will say that I've gained some useful intuition about life, especially with respect to the nature of thought and self. But I'm no dr strange. And at this point I no longer think of meditation as climbing up a ladder, or as a search for deep spiritual enrichment.

it's just an activity in my day that is almost always worth a slot of 25-40 mins of what feels to me as beginner-like meditative states, but they are usually perfect additions to my day. Is anyone in a similar boat? for now I'm comfortable with my med habits, but maybe at some point I will challenge myself to go deeper.

    Brahma Viharas

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 06:19 PM PDT

    Brahma Viharas

brahma-vihara: This term can be interpreted as excellent, praised, sublime or divine states of mind or as divine abodes. These attitudes are said to be excellent or sublime because they are the correct or ideal conduct in relation to living beings. The four Brahma Viharas are considered by Buddhism to be the four highest emotions. The word brahma literally means 'highest' or 'superior.' It is also the name given to the supreme god in Hinduism during the Buddha's time. Vihàra means 'to dwell', 'to live' or 'to abide.' Thus the Brahma Vihàras are not emotions one occasionally feels but those that one 'lives in' and 'lives by' all the time. These four Brahma Vihàras are loving-kindness, compassion, (vicarious) sympathetic joy, and equanimity. They can be understood from several different perspectives – as four related but separate qualities or perhaps better, as four different ways the spiritually mature person relates to others according to their situation. So for example, we relate to friendly people with love, to those in distress with compassion, to the successful with vicarious joy and to unpleasant people with equanimity. The purpose of the practice called Loving Kindness meditation is to encourage and nurture the Brahma Vihàras.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brahmavihara

"So, as I said, Kalamas: 'Don't go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, "This contemplative is our teacher." When you know for yourselves that, "These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness" — then you should enter & remain in them.' Thus was it said. And in reference to this was it said.

"Now, Kalamas, one who is a disciple of the noble ones — thus devoid of greed, devoid of ill will, undeluded, alert, & resolute — keeps pervading the first direction [the east] — as well as the second direction, the third, & the fourth — with an awareness imbued with good will. Thus he keeps pervading above, below, & all around, everywhere & in every respect the all-encompassing cosmos with an awareness imbued with good will: abundant, expansive, immeasurable, free from hostility, free from ill will.

"He keeps pervading the first direction — as well as the second direction, the third, & the fourth — with an awareness imbued with compassion. Thus he keeps pervading above, below, & all around, everywhere & in every respect the all-encompassing cosmos with an awareness imbued with compassion: abundant, expansive, immeasurable, free from hostility, free from ill will.

"He keeps pervading the first direction — as well as the second direction, the third, & the fourth — with an awareness imbued with appreciation. Thus he keeps pervading above, below, & all around, everywhere & in every respect the all-encompassing cosmos with an awareness imbued with appreciation: abundant, expansive, immeasurable, free from hostility, free from ill will.

"He keeps pervading the first direction — as well as the second direction, the third, & the fourth — with an awareness imbued with equanimity. Thus he keeps pervading above, below, & all around, everywhere & in every respect the all-encompassing cosmos with an awareness imbued with equanimity: abundant, expansive, immeasurable, free from hostility, free from ill will.

"Now, Kalamas, one who is a disciple of the noble ones — his mind thus free from hostility, free from ill will, undefiled, & pure — acquires four assurances in the here-&-now:

"'If there is a world after death, if there is the fruit of actions rightly & wrongly done, then this is the basis by which, with the break-up of the body, after death, I will reappear in a good destination, the heavenly world.' This is the first assurance he acquires.

"'But if there is no world after death, if there is no fruit of actions rightly & wrongly done, then here in the present life I look after myself with ease — free from hostility, free from ill will, free from trouble.' This is the second assurance he acquires.

"'If evil is done through acting, still I have willed no evil for anyone. Having done no evil action, from where will suffering touch me?' This is the third assurance he acquires.

"'But if no evil is done through acting, then I can assume myself pure in both respects.' This is the fourth assurance he acquires.

"One who is a disciple of the noble ones — his mind thus free from hostility, free from ill will, undefiled, & pure — acquires these four assurances in the here-&-now."

As someone who wants to start meditating I have a few questions.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 12:12 PM PDT

What is the purpose of meditating?

And when you sit down and physically start meditating, and controlling your breathing, what is the goal?

I guess I'm confused. Because I can't really do it, because I don't entirely understand it, it's purpose, or how you do it.

    Thank you guys.
