    Long hair and yoga

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 10:08 PM PDT

My hair is incredibly thick and pretty long (goes down to my belly button or so). I usually just keep my hair in a ponytail, but am sick of my hair falling infront of my face during practice.

On days where I have time, French and Dutch braids work, but I don't want to do them every day.

Long haired peoples, how do you keep your hair up during a session or in general when working out?

Also any tips to prevent headaches from hair being pulled tight for too long would be awesome.

    Down dog

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 05:33 PM PDT

Hey guys Just wanted to ask if any of you use down dog for doing yoga? It's an amazing app and it helped me so much but I wanted to ask if it's completely free? Like today they aren't letting me practice before I pay and I've done 4 practices till now. Is this normal or am I missing something lol. Sorry this isn't entirely related to yoga and may be a more technical issue but any help would be appreciated!

Has anyone given the 21 Day Hip Opening Challenge w Lucas R. a go? Thoughts?

Have extremely tight hips and was thinking of enrolling. Haven't found a lot of reviews online except on their own website though. Has anyone here done the challenge? What were your thoughts?

    What are yoga retreats like?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 07:08 AM PDT

I'm sure experiences will greatly vary, maybe even based on the country you're in but I was curious what your personal experiences have been. A former instructor of mine is holding a 3-4 day retreat in a couple months and it's full now but I was interested in it.

I've been practicing for about 10 years now and from a physical standpoint I've kinda hit my plateau with the classes I attend (and I'm having trouble finding anything more advanced), and from a spiritual standpoint I've always been the type to clear my mind. I'm just wondering what I can get out of a retreat.

Sun salutation: Problem synchronizing breath and movement

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 04:48 AM PDT

I am overweight but not morbidly obese. It affects my breathing and movement synchronization. When I do the sun salutation, I either want to inhale or exhale before the movement associated with that action is complete. Anyone else struggling with this? Do you have any tips?

Practicing with Ulnar Nerve issue? Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 12:14 PM PDT

I hope this doesn't break the rules.

Earlier this year, I started experiencing numbness in my left hand. After many weeks of navigating the healthcare system, it's been established that I have Cubital Tunnel Syndrome. This means my ulnar nerve has been injured or irritated and I need to focus on bending my elbow less and practicing nerve gliding. I'm very fortunate to not be in any pain, although the persistent numbness in my hand is annoying.

I have gone in and out of practice this year, for a myriad reasons (car accident, depression, this...). As I look into starting again, I was wondering if any of you have experienced this condition and wonder how you modified your practice?

    Yoga retreat recommendations

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 05:54 PM PDT

    Hey All,

Can y'all suggest some yoga retreats in the USA and surroundings that have a focus on proper body movement. Like yoga fit and kinesiology. Most of the ones I've seen online are like spas and holidays, with classes as an added fee. Im looking to do around 3-4 hrs of yoga a day and the rest of the time would be whatever. FYI, I'm a 27yr old male with a somewhat limited Budget. Not looking to drop too much money. Hope to hear some suggestions!

    Shoulder pain during child pose

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 01:46 AM PDT

Hey, before coming to my issue in this pose, very short summary of an injury I've had a few weeks ago which might could be the root of the pain I'm experiencing:

8 weeks ago I've practiced my handstand, and suddenly while my arms were stretched out I heard a very bad tearing noise in my shoulder which caused me to fall down. Couldn't move my arms for a solid 10-15 minutes before the pain slowly started decreasing. After that I got an X-Ray, Ultrasound and MRI of my shoulder done, diagnosis was: "Bone Bruise, joint effusion and my supraspinatus tendon looked a bit damaged". However, according to the radiology no visible damage to my shoulder labrum. After showing the images of the MRI to my orthopedist he said that I've probably "subluxated" my shoulder and that according to him he sees some kind of damage to the labrum, despite the radiology saying there is none. Few days later I went to a PT who I've explained to what happened, and he said that it's very unlikely that I've subluxated my shoulder, and therefore probably didn't damage my labrum from the exercise I did. He thinks its more likely some irriated infraspinatus issue.

Tried to keep it really short, but that should be a summary of what happened. Since pretty much every diagnosis I've received said something different, I have absolutely no idea what I'm supposed to do at the moment, so I tried out various stretched I've found here and on other subs to see in exact which position I can provocate the pain. And after trying out child pose with arms fully stretched out in front of me I can say this is definitely the stretch causing the most pain in my shoulder area. It feels like a really, really strong burning pain when doing the stretch, and after doing it for like 3x 30 seconds I can still feel the pain the next morning I wake up. And since both sides got injured I sadly can't really tell which pain comes from the injury, and which pain might would have been there without it anyway

Can anybody tell me which muscles / tendons are getting stretched in this position so I can further evaluate where the issue might come from or has an idea what could be my issue? It's been 8 weeks since my injury happened, and the pain is still high enough to prevent me from doing certain exercises in my workout. And neither my Doctors nor my PT could really help me out with that one so far, so I'm getting a bit frustrated

What intention have you set recently that really stuck with you throughout the day or even longer?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 07:33 PM PDT

Today, the intention to be more positive with myself and trust in the work I'm putting in without judgements just kind of arrived in my head and stuck with me through an intense power yoga workout. I wasn't able to do every pose like I have in the past, but I could feel energy when I breathed and remembered my intention.

What intentions have given you similar power? Thanks!

    Tried the down dog app

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 02:06 PM PDT

So I finally tried the app that someone recommended on here. I love it. I found out my balance is terrible. It's not easy cause some of my body has injured spots from pulling my muscles too much. I'm not giving up. I regret stopping this years ago but I'm determined to keep at this.

    How to avoid wrist pain?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 03:45 PM PDT

Hi yogis! I've found my wrists begin to get sore with regular vinyasa practise. I figure I can do two things: strengthen them, or avoid using them too much.

I want to keep practising, so does anyone have tips for strengthening my wrists and surrounding muscles? Or other tips in general?

    Thanks!

I had a gym yoga teacher mention this yoga every single class, anyone can point me in the way?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 11:54 PM PDT

He said this was the first original yoga, not sure if it's true.

I feel like I remember the name B. K. S. Iyengar and Krishnamacharya

I really enjoyed his class. He did the same routine every single time but I felt like it covered everything and I liked how it progressed. I hope I can find a yoga routine similar to follow.

Is it okay to only do yin/restorative type practices?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 10:38 AM PDT

Or is a yang practice necessary?

I just find that the yin and restorative yoga really help with my anxiety, and sometimes the yang practice increases my anxiety. Would I be creating an imbalance if I only practiced the yin/restorative type yoga?

Question about torn hamstrings and forward bend in seated sequence (first series)

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 03:50 PM PDT

I am working through the first series of Ashtanga yoga and I would really appreciate your insight.

I've being doing aerial silks for about 8+ years. Around that same time I started, I tore both hamstrings - specifically, at the ischial tuberosity while doing splits in the air. It's been a long way to recovery but I can still do pretty much any movement after warming up and stretching, and I do know my limits.

However, this injury has really affected my lower back's ability to forward bend due to the torn tendons, and I have a really hard time keeping a curved, tucked spine pretty much as I pass the seated 90 degree angle.

My questions is - for the following figures in the seated sequence:

    • Paschimottasana (A, B, C)
    • Arda Badda Padma Paschimottanasana
    • Triang Much Eka Pada Paschimottasana
    • Janu Sirasana (A,B, C)
    • Marichyasana (A, B)

Is it ok if I bend the straight leg forward, to allow for the rounding of my spine? Or should I keep it straight, focusing on bringing my head forward and down?

I've asked some practitioners with mixed answers, so I would really like to listen to your thoughts! I can also share pics.

    Thank you!
