Meditation: What I lose when I do not create time for even 10 min of meditation

What I lose when I do not create time for even 10 min of meditation

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 02:11 PM PDT

Amazing how the impact is felt negatively when I fail to make time to meditate. Just one missed day is enough to sense a loss of control of thought patterns, to feel overcome by emotions and desires, to feel less able to navigate "noise". A couple of days without meditation and my life feels buffeted…just 10 minutes is all it takes to see improvement

A helpful technique I've heard a hundred times - but finally tried.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 12:53 PM PDT

Hello! I recently had a sort of aha moment in my meditation I wanted to share.

I've heard a bunch of variations of this technique, but don't really know what it's called or what exactly I experienced with it (so if any of you have insight, that'd be great).

Basically - you meditate with attention on the breath, like many of us have a thousand times. You gently rest your attention on your breath, without trying to control it. Eventually, you may notice your breaths become shallower, and shallower. Once they reach a point where you're relaxed and your breath is doing its thing, you gently shift your awareness to a pleasent sensation in the body. Again, not trying to control it - just noticing it. When we do this without trying to control it, the pleasant sensation can grow and grow.

I experienced this feeling first hand recently and it was beyond words... it swelled up in me enough that I gasped and lost it. My understanding is that we can't really chase this feeling, because if we approach it with craving - we won't be able to gently rest our attention on it like we need to.

It was joy, coming from myself, without any attachment to outside things. I felt deeply content and full of... an orgasmic sense of ease (if that makes sense?). Does anybody have insight into this experience?

    Sitting with your feelings

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 10:56 AM PDT

Sorry if this doesn't belong here. I recently watched a video where long story short, we're born as our authentic selves living with our hearts. Over time pain happens and we build a wall around our hearts. Then the mind attempts to make us feel fulfilled, but that's the heart's job and we can never feel fulfilled as long as that wall is there.

The video says that we need to break the wall around our hearts by sitting with the pain that caused us to build a wall in the first place. Pain/fear of abandonment/rejection, pain/fear of being alone, pain/fear of failure, pain/fear of making an embarrassment of yourself, whatever, you name it.

So, great. I'm ready to do that. But how do I do that? Have you done it? How does it work?

Just tried out "love meditation" for the first time

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 12:50 AM PDT

So i bought a book called "meditation for beginners" and the final lesson was something called love meditation (where you basically meditate normally but then you focus on raising love and sending it to myself and the everything). I sincerely thought it was just a clumsy thing and didn't tried it till now, and i can't believe the amount of love i was feeling, never felt such a pure and fulfilling love in my life, it was something i was giving to the universe, to the people, to the loved ones that are no longer in this world, everything. It was the first time I cried while finishing a meditation, i got to my knees and thanked for the life i was given. Now i know that i rather share and give my love instead of just trying to receive it, such a wonderful experience.

Has meditation helped your anxiety? How so?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:24 PM PDT

I'm struggling to prioritize meditation and I guess I'm just hoping other people's experiences might help. Feel like I am trapped in anxiety.

What’s the best way to put distance or separate yourself from your thoughts?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:19 PM PDT

I've always found it difficult to not believe what my thoughts are telling me, most of my thinking isn't beneficial towards me, in fact it's just ruminating on past mistakes. What helps you to show that your thoughts are not who you are?

Anger in the present moment? Overcome with a smile!

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 06:37 PM PDT

This can easily be practiced. While you meditate, while you focus your attention on your breathing, or on a mantra, practice your smile. Smile while you meditate. Yes, turn the tips of those lips upward just a bit.

When next you feel anger in the present moment, again practice your smile. Smile says to the rest of your body that you've got this! You refuse to waste time on anger. Smile in the face of it. Practice your smile while you meditate, and anger gets easier and easier to deal with.

Stay on the good path all, and be safe! and be thankful! stay healthy! and spread the good! and may your journey be filled with love, happiness and self-discovery! Painius 🙏

2 years of breath work finally doing something

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 01:37 PM PDT

I have been doing square breathing for like 2 years now. All it's done before is leave me frustrated.

I did meditation pretty seriously for a year and then quit.

But yesterday I went on a walk and the tendons in my knee were hurting, and I did some breathing

    And the pain went away.

I think breath work is like any other sport…

The best example I can think of is snowboarding You eat shit a bunch and then you can ride and it doesn't make any sense

Some days I can focus on my breath for less than a minute in s 30 minute session.

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 01:22 AM PDT

Some days there are so many thoughts running through my mind that I'm barely able to focus on my breath during meditation.

Is there any benefit by meditating like this? Should I just give up on days like this and try it when I'm calmer?

Any insights on “letting thoughts go” for the noting technique?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 02:56 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

I have recently started meditation for a couple of weeks now (I use the Headspace app) and the one technique they stress is the noting technique (acknowledging the thought, as (un)pleasant or neutral, and then letting it go. For me, the identification of the thought as something (un)pleasant or neutral is an easy step, but I am having issue with the "letting go" part. There are visualizations like picturing a cloud with your thought on it and slowly watching it drift away, or to put your thought on a car and letting it "drive away" as you observe it? Sometimes these don't work for me and I was wondering whether anyone can offer any other insights as how to make the letting go part more concrete or has any other examples out there?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

    Scary meditation/sleep experience? Help

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 07:30 PM PDT

I'm not so good at explaining but I'll do my best. Basically , I have been very dissociative , zoned out etc. And it's really been freaking me out because I don't want to be and it's starting to like really affect my lifestyle. (I don't have DP/DR or anything). I thought a grounding meditation before bed would help a lot to tune in with myself and help stabilize things. Wasn't my favorite guided one I've done but I felt sleepy and content during, so I went to bed. Then proceeded to have a lucid dream where I was doing reality checks (counting fingers looking at clock etc) and realized I was dreaming, but I couldn't wake up. I was completely trapped and was very scared at that point. Then I ended up seeing a bunch of shadow figures/people, specifically one that I had to "defeat" if I wanted to wake up. I felt like when I finally woke up that my soul had been jolted back into my body, in the worst way. It felt like i was in the dream for hours, not able to get myself out. I am now very frazzled and trying to fully understand why that all happened when mediation usually benefits me. Nothing bad has happened recently, and the meditation was fine. Has anyone had a similar experience / could tell me what this means? I'm scared to meditate now because of what it caused this time. P.S. I usually have vivid dreams but never like this one.

I meditated for the first time and tears poured out of my eyes the entire time. Why?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 10:56 PM PDT

Yesterday I mediated twice and today once. It was the same guided meditation I got off Spotify. I did enjoy it. It starts by asking you to imagine you're in one of your favorite places. Each of the three times I chose a different place. And each time tears just start pouring out of my eyes for like ten mins. I'm Not sad… more like leaking sadness.

The first time I thought of Patrick's Point. Fave vacation spot growing up. Immediately when I envisioned myself there I saw my dad who has been aging quickly as of late and he was young like he used to be and the thought of him being old now was the start of the tears.

The second time I imagined I was at the beach and i saw my kids playing in the ocean and they were so happy and the thought of them experiencing pain in life (broken hearts, loss, etc) had me unexpectedly leaking tears again.

The third time I imagined I was at my favorite trail. And immediately I was "transported" to the one time I was there with my kids right before their beloved cat had to be euthanized. Tears, obv.

I'm not an especially under or overly emotional person typically. I'm not trying to cry. And tbh I'm not even meditating for me, I was doing it with my daughter to support her. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it and am glad I tried it and will continue it for myself. But what's up with the river??

    I struggle to meditate

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 12:17 PM PDT

Whenever I meditate, I always find it hard to not control the breath, let alone just observing it. I don't know what to do, I've had sessions in the past where I would cry or find a deep love for myself, but recently it's been hard not to control my breath. Is anyone having the same problem? (Sorry for my bad english)

Why others make it look so easy to achieve things?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:13 PM PDT

Why others make it look so easy to achieve things?

After graduating from College 7 years ago. I thought, this is my moment. BUT NO. I'll disclose my occupation . But, this is my dream since i was a kid. It took me extra years to achieved while others who started the same journey as mine is in so much better position right now, making living out of it. Even other people that have shift job lately to this occupation of mine. (Ex Nurse etc etc ) Achieved it effortlessly. Dont get me wrong, there are few times that i really excelled to the top and felt my worth doing this. And yet for me, no matter how much effort i put into it, it doesnt reciprocate the result i believed i really deserved. I always fall short of people's expectation. I even encounter 1-2 ppl in my life that would even question my history. ( Ex. Are you good in school back then?) Although, there are few ppl have thought that i must be really good on my work. Regardless, looking back, i felt like im a cursed since then. There are alot factors to account in. But, im sick of this falling down and getting back up type of thing! I've fallen so hard all throughout my life. It's just physically and mentally draining that i couldn't let go. Fvck th!s.

Can anyone recommend a type of meditation for someone who suffers from depersonalisation/derealisation?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 05:04 PM PDT

Idk if the title really explains it but after meditating for 5 mins i feel that my nose is too "harsh" if that makes sense it's like a feeling of too much breathing i don't know why, sometimes i can pass 10 mins fine without having this feeling but most od the time I can't conio because it's kinda discomfort my meditation experience, also i breath through my chest though, should i breath from my belly and slow breathing? I feel like i breath fast

Confusion About the Link Between Consciousness and Mind

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 10:24 AM PDT

I understand that meditators generally see a distinction between consciousness and mind. I have made posts where I argued a distinction was not so sharp but I have had different thoughts since then. As I understand it consciousness is responsible for both willpower and perception. Brain activity stimulates consciousness through electrochemical signals and maybe thought/feeling too as the mind responds to a host of variables - memories, language, logic, emotions, experience, bodily sensations (pain/pleasure) and so on.

We are told "we are not the mind" by meditators, Buddhists and Taoists but mental activity - the mind - is at least generated by consciousness, maybe even a part of consciousness. After all, we are never conscious to perceive nothing because then we would be unconscious/dead/comatose. The reason I can't understand the practice of "no thought" meditation is the same reason I believe consciousness has to have something to perceive otherwise we don't know who/what we are in relation to everything else (space only exists in context to stars, planets and space matter, silence only exists in relation to sound, darkness is only perceived as being opposite to light and so on).

If that's so, then thought/feeling exists because perception exists and thought is just mind responding to sensory input - both outside the body (environment) and inside (bodily sensations, memories and so on from the subconscious mind). Mind is surely a part of consciousness because consciousness is everything that it perceives and everything that it perceives is filtered through mind. If thought/feeling is stimulated by electrochemical signals from being awake, they can't be "shut off" and surely, they can't be prevented as a reaction to sensory input - that's just a survival instinct. Also judgement is a natural response to this - it's how we refine our thoughts and feelings, so that we can enhance our perception, judgement and analysis of sensory input to tame a better response to our environment.

This means delving into past experiences, to compare to present experiences and considering where the present moment will lead us to in the future. Shutting down mind would surely mean experiencing our surroundings only in some sort of vegetative state. I'm not even sure how else we can experience consciousness any different than we do before ever practising meditation which I have done so albeit inconsistently over nearly a decade and more consistently as of recent. I believe meditation may have some therapeutic benefits like enhanced mental acuity but I cannot see that altered states of consciousness are anything but a myth other than through the use of psychedelics (and even then, only as an illusion).
