Posted: 07 Aug 2021 08:58 AM PDT I'm a reasonably experienced yogi but I have a very stiff, inflexible back. Which leads me to conclude, (1) I should be doing backbends but (2) I should take it easy. Sphinx is OK, cobra is tough but things like camel and wheel are, at best, off-limits and, at worst, downright scary! Backbends don't seem to lend themselves to modification that well either. What are my options for backbend progression? Should I stick with Sphinx until I feel ready to move on and substitute it for other backbends when they appear in a routine? Are modifications easier than I think? Or are there other things I should be doing to help? Can anybody share how they have gone from back-stiffy to back-bendy? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Aug 2021 08:04 PM PDT Hello everyone! I have a rather odd question, and I am curious to see if anyone else has experienced this as well. I was given the happy baby pose to do for one of my pelvic floor physical therapy exercises (with diaphragmatic breathing, to release tension in the pelvic floor), but no matter what I do/how I modify the pose, both of my hips just pinch in the front, so much so that I can't continue for as long as I need to hold it. The pain slowly starts coming on about 5-10 seconds after I get into position, and builds to the severe pain within ~10 more seconds. I have tried not holding my feet and holding at my ankles or knees to achieve less hip flexion but it doesn't change the pain at all. Recently I have also felt this same pinching pain in both hips with child's pose as well (which wasn't happening before). I recently had a pelvic MRI done (for other reasons), and I do see what seems to be a slight labral tear on the left, slight cam impingement on both, and also a bit of coxa valga, and significant anteversion on both hips (it's totally fine if this doesn't make sense to most people, I'm a physical therapy student, so just my observations ☺️). So.. I guess my question is, has anyone else experienced this issue? And was anything discovered afterwards (via imaging, etc.)? [link] [comments] |
Want to do in class Yoga in Chicago but am nervous Posted: 07 Aug 2021 02:55 PM PDT Hi there I currently live in Lincoln Park in Chicago and am looking for a reputable studio near me. (Lmk about any even around Lincoln park) I have only ever watched and followed yoga on YouTube. Yoga with Adriene being the main one. I also do not have anyone that would be interested in going with me. So I am here to ask where I could go and also if I should be nervous. I assume most studios and instructors will not have judgement just do to the art and act of yoga in general. I also consistently meditate so I know to just let these nervous feelings pass and not worry until I get there. However, I have a hard time actually motivating myself to go and sign up for a class. I guess I am asking for any guidance from people who have also been in my shoes. Thank you for reading this. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Aug 2021 10:12 AM PDT I'm trying to figure out if it's better for me to start by doing it at home and follow along to someone like Antranik or going into a class. What are the pros and cons of doing yoga at home vs going into a class? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Aug 2021 09:35 PM PDT So this has happened a few times now. I suffer from an anxiety disorder that I can mask extremely well. I take regular therapy and try to not skip my mat. Recently, a few times when I tried to start a practice, I have ended up crying. It was once or twice at first, but now it is becoming frequent. Not just a little sniffle, but bawling. I can't get past the crying and onto the asanas. It is also instilling in me a fear of the mat. Any suggestions on how to proceed ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Aug 2021 01:22 PM PDT I was trying to take a nap and automatic pranayamic breathing started, and my prana was refining. I started feeling really weird, and got up. This lasted for another 10 or 15 minutes. I am freaked out. Does anyone understand? [link] [comments] |
Manduka pro mat worth breaking in? Posted: 07 Aug 2021 10:45 AM PDT After reading rave reviews I decided to purchase a Manduka Pro Lite yoga mat. It arrived last week and so I've only practiced on it a few times so far. Right now it is soooo slippery and I understand there is a break-in process but I'm wondering if it is worth it for the price of the mat. Before this I had a Jade mat, which I loved everything about - the cushion and grip and feel. But the Jade was also pricey and only lasted me 2 years (daily use, sometimes multiple times a day.) The main reason I went with the Manduka was because I'm hoping it will last forever, as they claim. Before the Jade I had a series of cheap, $10 basic mats that would wear out and I would replace. I haven't done the salt process (or any other process) for breaking in the Manduka yet because I'm trying to decide if I should keep it or return it. I'm just not convinced that the salt process will solve the slipperyness issue I'm having. I do a combination of a home practice, practicing in a studio, outdoors, and sometimes hot yoga. I haven't tried the mat outdoors or during hot yoga yet. It seems like I would definitely be needing a towel for hot yoga which I don't love (I have a sensory issue with the microfiber feel of hot yoga towels.) One of the reasons I loved my Jade so much was that I didn't need a towel for hot yoga, but it seems like the trade off is the longevity of the mat. So, basically what I'm wondering is, people who have Manduka Pro mats - is it worth it? Both the price and the break-in time? [link] [comments] |
When is the time to tell your yoga instructor you are pregnant? Posted: 07 Aug 2021 01:04 AM PDT Should you do it before getting pregnant, once you're gonna try? Once you're sure you're pregnant? After the first trimester when the pregnancy is more 'secure'? Does it matter whether you do Yin Yoga or Vinyasa? I could imagine that there's less risk in Yin poses during pregnancy that in power yoga.. Asking for a friend [link] [comments] |
Got into my first arm balance today Posted: 06 Aug 2021 08:44 PM PDT For a few seconds anyway I found myself able to hop off the floor into crow. Now i will try to stay longer. I couldn't even hop off the floor before. The weirdest thing is it sort of just happened and I thought I was never gonna get an arm balance! ( I am the same poster who was finally able to get into wheel but couldn't lift her head off the ground!) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Aug 2021 03:49 AM PDT I used to be intimated by strength training because I didn't really want to get bulky. I'm trying to get into a handtand now cause I started yoga and my lack of strength training is biting me in the ass so I guess I have some questions about strength in general…. 1 strength apparently can be gained like flexibilty correct? 2 getting more strength doesn't really alter ur appearance correct or does it makes your muscles bigger ? 3 does more muscles automatically mean more strength? 4 where does strength come from? 5 I once met a tiny lady on the internet who weighed about 100 lbs and could power lift 300 lbs so is it true you can be tiny and strong and also big and weak if you don't practice your strength?? Any info on strength would be great ! Thanks peeps [link] [comments] |
