I had a revelation during the yoga class today Posted: 02 Aug 2021 08:50 AM PDT I was in the zoom yoga class today and it was getting challenging and I was getting hot. Wanted to pause and turn the fan on. Then I realized turning the fan on might make it better momentarily but it doesn't fix anything. The space between the discomfort and the bliss will remain the same no matter what I do. If the discomfort shifts the bliss will also shift. Then I looked at the clock and thought about time. I can wish the class to be over to end the discomfort but how long would I remember that before something else puts me back into the discomfort mode? The thought was rather startling. yoga/meditation retreats in southwest US? Posted: 02 Aug 2021 07:32 PM PDT Hi. I'm planning a trip in September to fly to Denver, go to Moab and Monument Valley, and maybe check out New Mexico. Can anyone recommend a good yoga and meditation retreat in the places I mentioned above? Or, is there a good website for find yoga retreats? Of course I googled but there's so much stuff. I'm looking for legit hatha, vinyasa, or similar. I'm not interested in expensive "lifestyle" resort kind of stays for $500 a day. Thanks for anything you can share. [link] [comments] |

I knew this was going to happen… Posted: 02 Aug 2021 06:03 AM PDT I will start by saying that I have had x-rays, surgeries and been cleared to exercise as I please but this scar tissue is giving me problems. I began yoga mostly to release old emotional baggage. I really enjoy the breath work and feeling the stretch and release of year of tension is intoxicating. I have gotten to a point that I am into scar tissue from a 14 year old gunshot wound, I have 12 ga buckshot imbedded in my right glute, a second in my iliacis and the holes from 7 other slugs passing through my right hip area - rib cage to groin. I would like to hear from others that have dealt with larger scared areas. Did you enlist the help of a physiotherapist, massage therapy, continue to yoga yourself through until the scars loosened? Do you think Yoga should be thought of as "spiritual"? Posted: 02 Aug 2021 07:50 AM PDT So last year was my first year discovering hot yoga and as someone who grew up in spiritual/religious circles, I found approaching yoga with a level of spiritual respect and reverence for the ancientness of the tradition and the many mysteries potentially present in what each pose might be accomplishing in my body/psyche. The instructor and runner of the studio and I became friends over the year and I eventually asked him to be on my podcast to talk a bit about his journey with yoga as well as to talk a bit about this perspective on the "spiritual" side of yoga. Markus (The owner) grew up in a fundamentalist Christian home but later upon examining his religion rejected it in general and began to think more deeply about his beliefs and his philosophy. When we talked he went into a bit of his story and how he ultimately ended up practicing and teaching Yoga and meditation from a primarily secular framework. I challenged him on this perspective towards Yoga and we dug a bit deeper into what it means to "listen to your body" and have a relationship with the "unknown". I still really think there's something really useful and meaningful about the language of "spirit" and "mystical", though he took a pretty hardline position that those words generally have too much baggage and are connected to too many misunderstandings about the world and nature of humanity. I think that might be a bit too much of a reductionist approach, but I'm interested to hear what some other's who have been practicing(or teaching) for a long time have to say about this. Do you think we lose something important about the practice of yoga when we remove the "spiritual" elements or take the view that humanity and the human spirit is nothing more than material chemical reactions? Or is that sort of thinking primarily just a distraction from the actual utility of yoga? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Aug 2021 10:19 AM PDT Hey all, Basically the question is simple, why is it so important to not skip savasana? I just find it a little odd because for example other workouts or forms of exercise, they never rest and lie on their backs for 5 minutes... So why is it so important for a yoga practice? I usually just stay there for 30 seconds but I've been told that it's not enough. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Aug 2021 11:26 AM PDT I came from a powerlifting background but it caused me knee pain so I've moved to more body weight and gymnastic moves. And kettlebells. But now I would like to know, if I were to go completely body weight, can yoga give you strong legs. [link] [comments] |
Help figuring out what type of sessions for injured body Posted: 02 Aug 2021 06:24 AM PDT Hey alle. I'm a 34 year old male, new to yoga, but absolutely loving it! It takes all the willpower I have, to not do many hours a day. Anyway, due to living an immobile life for the first 30 or so years, and going way too fast and hard on strength training afterwards, I have quite a few injuries that don't go away on their own. Double shinsplints on both legs, plantar fasciitis, RSI in the wrist and elbow, and a good and proper shoulder muscle-something injury. All the medical professionals I've been to say the same thing. Daily, thorough stretching of the inflicted areas is the way to go. I use both YouTube and Down Dog as my yoga guides. At the moment I'm doing a 30 minute hatha session, followed by 2 different restoritive sessions, each with their own focus on a problem-area. There are several issues doing 3 different routines in succession, not the least of which is being constantly interrupted to put on the next one. And in the end, I don't even feel like I've hit all my problem areas. Can anyone provide me with some advice, as to what kind of single session I can do, that would allow me to thoroughly stretch every part of the body? I tried 1 hour Hatha sessions, and still didn't feel like I hit it all. Would setting the app to 90 minutes maybe do the trick? Or maybe try a different kind og yoga, perhaps Yin? I'm worried that Yin won't offer the other benefits I'm looking for, which is strength and endurance. I won't stop yoga even if I can't find the perfect solution, because I love it. Every part of it. But it would be incredible if I could find a way, to get both the physical progression in strength, cardio and endurance, while also getting the healing properties of the deep stretches. Maybe 45 minutes physically exertive yoga, followed by 45 minutes of a more stretch-focused style? Thank you kindly in advance. [link] [comments] |
Manduka pro mat accidentally folded Posted: 02 Aug 2021 06:42 AM PDT My manduka pro mat just went though a move to my new city. Very unfortunately it was trapped under something in the truck (shame on me) and now I've got a pretty good crease. I've been letting the mat lay flat for a couple of days and right now it's out in the sun. Any tips on getting out the crease or is it there forever? [link] [comments] |
