Starting to Have Some Doubts About Ashtanga Posted: 11 Apr 2020 01:25 PM PDT I started practicing ashtanga yoga in mid-January. I went to a beginners course and we were six weeks into it before the studio had to close because of coronavirus. For the past two months, I've been practicing in the morning 5-6 days per week. I generally do the standing sequence, and have started adding in a few other postures. I get the impression that ashtanga is mainly a system for those who want to focus exclusively on ashtanga, considering how lengthy and intense the practice is. The thing is, I don't want ashtanga to be my only form of exercise, far from it in fact. But with doing ashtanga in the morning, I don't have much energy or strength for other forms of exercise. Solely focusing on ashtanga with my exercise feels very limited, both mentally and for my body. I like to go for walks, runs, a bit of movement training, strength training etc. Recently, I have been going for runs in the evening and notice I haven't got a lot of energy. When I practice ashtanga the morning after, it feels like a struggle and I feel very tight in my legs. I've noticed in the past week or so that I don't seem to be making much progress in ashtanga, and I've actually started to lose some desire to practice in the morning. Maybe the fact I'm not going to the studio is making me lose motivation, I don't know... Just thinking that maybe I would be better suited to doing another form of yoga which is not as intensive on the body, something which will give me the energy and strength to do other forms of exercise. What do you think?? [link] [comments]
Why led classes never allow for the last breath to finish? Posted: 11 Apr 2020 02:28 PM PDT This is something I have observed in most of the led primary series that are on Youtube, and I think I've done them all. What I mean is that during the State of the Asana the teacher will count (for example during downward dogs in Surya Namaskars): one.... two... three... four... five panca! They immediately say panca or whatever comes next and never give enough time to finish the fifth round of breathing. Or Utthita Trikonasana: three... four... five inhale up!! And so on for every pose. Is there a reason for this? Is the reason that when they say the number they are counting the exhalation? I feel the last breath is always so rushed and I fall behind. So, any explanation? (Example: Today's led class by Kino: https://youtu.be/0DVHDwiblpM?t=788) [link] [comments]
How do you manage to keep up a daily Primary series practice without taking a toll on your body? Posted: 11 Apr 2020 06:38 AM PDT Four days of Ashtanga practice in a row and the fifth day my body needs rest. I keep hearing that Ashtangis must practice everyday. How does one keep up a daily practice, beats me. My body takes a tool and my muscles ache, and they need a days rest. What's your practice routine like? Do you practice daily? If so, any tips on how I can maintain a daily practice? [link] [comments]
