Where should I start with yoga?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 08:09 PM PDT

Hey there, as the title implies I'm wanting to start doing yoga in an actual productive way. I'm a gridiron player (linebacker/longsnapper) but with the gyms being closed it's a good chance to work on my core/flexibility/mobility as those have always been a weak point of mine especially shoulders, hips, and ankles they've all been tight for a long time.

All that being said, where should I start? Is there a self-test of sorts I can do to figure out where I'm at in the yoga world? Finally I guess does anyone have any recommendations for routines or anything?

Thankyou, have a good one! :)

Just started yoga/deep stretching this week and have noticed my joints are all cracking so much more the more I stretch and loosen up. Is that normal?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 07:47 PM PDT

Pretty much every single joint on my body cracks now. It doesn't hurt it just seems weird.

I’ve just made a new Subreddit for Yoga

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 05:08 PM PDT

There is no right or wrong with Yoga but there is preferences. I've noticed many people here are doing Yoga for physical benefits including flexibility, comfortability within their body, fitness, relaxation.

There is an entire Philosophy though, there is more than a philosophy there's a lifestyle that ends suffering, one very similar to Buddhism. A road to enlightenment, interconnectness, understanding. A road of moral ethics and transformation.

Pop over to /r/VedanticYoga if you're interested.

Will yoga help me build muscle?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 10:16 AM PDT

I am a 27 year old man - in pretty decent shape. I mostly run these days, so I am not that muscular. I like doing Yoga a couple times a week, especially during social distancing. Will it build any muscle though?

    Beginner accountability buddy wanted :)

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 08:00 PM PDT

Hi! Without a studio, I'm less motivated to practice and can already feel the difference. Anyone want to be virtual accountability buddies? Down to do Zoom yoga sessions, maybe with the same video, and/or just check in on each other. I'm 25F, a beginner in DC, and would prefer another woman located anywhere/any age! :)

Is it normal to get sick?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 06:44 AM PDT

I tried yoga for the second time today and I really love doing it but I got super nauseous. I actually had to run to the bathroom to throw up and come back. I continued to feel pretty nauseous throughout the rest of it. Is this normal?

Sorry to ask about this unique posture position, but I figure you guys/gals would know. I lay down like this while on my laptop or playing video games, can I improve this somehow to prevent my neck from hurting after?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 02:51 PM PDT

I lay down like this while on my laptop or playing video games, and it's super comfortable at the time but my neck kills me afterwards. What's the best solution to this?

Here's the position, I know the 'best' solution is to just sit differently but I've been doing it for so long and only recently does my neck hurt after the fact. Sitting in the position doesn't hurt, it's just the after effects.

That being said, is there a way I can either improve the position or at least do something every 30min-1hr to prevent any issues with my neck?

Does marijuana help or inhibit yoga practice?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 07:17 AM PDT

I'm recently new to yoga and started in part to Chronic back pain. I'm also a habitual smoker. I've found that doing yoga flow under the influence helps my stretching by muting pain. I find that it helps me. But from the meditation side I question whether it helps or hurts the mental effects of meditation practice. Thoughts?

Edit: try smoking, putting on trance music, and doing yoga sometime. It's amazing!

How long to hold poses for better muscle relaxation and body alignment?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 03:28 AM PDT

I am fairly tight and have some muscle imbalances, and have recently done a few yoga sessions. My body is already feeling different.

My short term goals with my yoga practice is to relieve tight muscles, have better posture / alignment... And just have my body work better. Mainly to aid my weightlifting / strength routine.

If I hold poses for longer, will that bring me these short term benefits sooner?

I'm not interested in treating yoga as a workout / cardio / strength routine.... And it seems that faster paced practices work on these types of goals.

So am I right in thinking that slower paced yoga where you hold each pose for longer... Will better suit me?

    Would this be "restorative yoga"?

If anybody has any good video recommendations for beginners to achieve these goals I'm looking for, that would be appreciated too.

Edit: Another short term goal of mine is to increase flexibility.

Edit 2: Looks like Iyengar yoga could be suitable?

Edit 3: For any fellow beginners interested in achieving the same goals as me, here is a great looking series of videos that I'll be working my way through

Wrist pain: Question for Yoga instructors

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 06:41 AM PDT

    Hi there!

I am very new to yoga. I'm a beginner or less. I'm 35 and a little overweight. I am finding that any pose that requires me placing my hand down and bearing some weight on it is hurting my wrist and I don't like it. Down dog, and pretty much anything. I am looking for any tips that will help my wrists hurt less. I really don't know anything much about yoga, so be nice please ! Any info is helpful and I'd be grateful. I don't have any pre-existing medical conditions with my wrists, and normally don't experience any pain, problems with movement, or numbness. I am enjoying yoga so far, even though i'm not very flexible (at least right now) and I'd hate to imbed this lasting discomfort into my brain and not enjoy yoga anymore because of the fear of wrist pain. Thank you all!
