Ashtanga yoga: Strength Training! |
| Posted: 22 Apr 2020 08:09 PM PDT I'd like to add some strength training to supplement my practice. I plan on using resistance bands and some light weights. So lots of pulling exercises. I would so this for about 30 minutes to (max) an hour 3-4 times a week. The reason is because I am actually really flexible but not as strong as I'd like to be. I have knees that hurt sometimes which I attribute to just not having a lot of muscle/strength to support them for example. Anyway, what I'm really on the fence about is doing this before or after practice? Before, would be maybe an hour or so before practice. After, would be maybe some time in the evening because I wouldn't want to strength train right after - also because I hear it can lead to injury. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
| Posted: 22 Apr 2020 12:50 AM PDT I've been an on and off yogi for about five years. About six months ago, I started going to a yoga studio five days a week doing different vinyasa flow stuff, depending on who was teaching. Giving it that level of consistency has been so deeply rewarding. I am now in love with yoga. When the quarantine started, I had to figure something out to keep up the momentum, so I decided to try Ashtanga. I've been curious for a while and feel like the system suits me well. I must say it's been a little intense! I was taking level 2-3 classes before, and doing only the quarter primary works me harder than usual. I feel sore in weird ways that I've never felt, deep in my bones and joints. It's especially pronounced in my knees. When I sit in half-lotus to meditate, they ache. I also feel my body changing pretty rapidly. It's such a fantastic feeling to do one of the poses just slightly better the next day. I also love how the structure aligns the breath with everything so effectively. I can't wait to memorize it. I realize it's going to be different for everyone, but I'm curious if anyone can talk about what it's like to settle into the ashtanga method. What does it feel like in three months? Six months? What happens with this pain and soreness? I am learning by watching videos and going for it 6 days a week, observing moons (I also love this part). I'm in my 40s, is injury a significant risk?
