Finally did a proper yogic squat! Posted: 03 Apr 2020 07:35 PM PDT Small thing, but I've never been able to do one without being on tiptoe. Today I finally held one with my feet fully on the ground, and it felt great. I'm new to this community, but excited to celebrate the small achievements in yoga! [link] [comments] |

What is your daily yoga routine? How has it changed over time? Posted: 03 Apr 2020 06:17 PM PDT Do you practice more than once per day? Do you have a routine or do you just do it as the mood strikes? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2020 05:39 AM PDT Wooohooo so I just wanted to share my joy with you in these dark times. I started doing yoga last November, entering the practice with very little core and upper body strength. Ever managing to get into crow pose seemed impossible at the time. Now, without any expectations, I suddenly managed to get it and hold it (even though only for a good 5 seconds). It feels great to know there's progress! Do you have specific goals in mind when practicing yoga? [link] [comments] |
In the middle of my 200hr yoga teacher training right now amidst COVID-19, some suggestions? Posted: 03 Apr 2020 12:45 PM PDT Title says it all. We began the YTT class beginning of January and it's suppose to run until end of May. We've had to adjust our trainings to online Zoom calls and while I know it's just the way it has to be, it really isn't the same as in-person, with all the other students. We are on week 7 and I believe there are 3 or 4 weeks left. I haven't been able to go to classes much either now with everything moving online, I just have a hard time getting myself to the mat and being present. I guess my question is for other teachers or others who have done YTT: is doing everything online going to prepare me well enough at the end? I'm nervous that it will set me back. I'm very serious about pursuing teaching and was planning on doing the 300hr after getting some practice teaching in (had things lined up for after the training but now that's also looking unlikely). And another question is: what else can I do at home that can supplement learning things online? I'm trying my best to attend more classes, that's pretty much the only thing I can think of to work on. I'm also reading more yoga books that were outside of our required reading. Any tips, info, or suggestions is greatly appreciated! Stay safe, everyone. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2020 04:15 PM PDT Hello, I've been doing yoga for over a year now and recently, every time I get up from shavasana (corpse pose), I feel a sharp pain in my lower back while trying to sit up at the end of my exercise. I have literally 0 problems with my lower back except this one. Has anyone experienced this? [link] [comments] |
Yoga jargon: "side body", "back body", etc. Posted: 03 Apr 2020 11:07 AM PDT I hear phrases like this a lot and I don't get it. Why not just say "side" and "back"? Where did this phrasing start? [link] [comments] |
How often do you wash your mat/towel? Posted: 03 Apr 2020 06:03 PM PDT Hello! I do mostly hot yoga, haven't had too much of a trouble with slipping but I know sweating into your mat also breaks it down faster. So I'm thinking about getting a towel, but I don't have a washing machine at home. I'm wondering how often do you wash your mat/towels? And how do you wash them? [link] [comments] |
Beginner who can’t keep their lower back flat Posted: 03 Apr 2020 09:17 AM PDT I've been trying to begin doing yoga with some basic routines but find that I cannot keep my lower back flat in most poses. I already suffer from low back pain and fear that I am just doing more harm than good. Any suggestion? [link] [comments] |
i have anxiety , please help me feel less overwhelmed Posted: 03 Apr 2020 10:35 AM PDT i have a tendency not to try new things due to anxiety. i see all of these different yoga videos on youtube and it overwhelms me to the point of physical sickness. today i did a ten minute practice and it felt great, but now i'm thinking about the countless other videos that are available to me and whether or not i should be doing them. to put it a different way, i'm not sure if i'm doing the right thing / if i should be doing more, which is causing me to want to stop my practice. i loved to do yoga during a meditation retreat i attended, and the fact that my entire day was scheduled made it easier to engage in the practice. does anyone have any tips on how to overcome this anxiety? Are there any subs dedicated to yoga studio ownership or management? Posted: 03 Apr 2020 12:02 PM PDT I help out at a few yoga studios with their energy exchange programs and I am worried that all of them are going to go bankrupt if this covid closure of fitness studios endures for another 2 months or so. They have all begun streaming online classes and trying to charge a fraction of what they usually charged for classes and that is not working out... At all. We put on a live streaming class this morning and asked for a donation of $5, I made the payment experience really seamless, and the streaming video quality was great. Both audio and video. We only received a single $5 donation... from about 20 students who practiced... which is a decent number for our smaller studio. Which I can understand. Money is tight right now. Most people are not getting a paycheck beyond government handouts in Canada at the moment. And everybody is worried about what the future may bring. What's worse is we now find ourselves in direct competition with hundreds of other much more professional online yoga/fitness streaming services. Like yyoga who only charges $8/mo for hundreds of pre-recorded yoga classes. Or glo.com who charges $18/mo for thousands of pre-recorded classes of all kinds. The studio owner has negotiated the studio's rent to be cut in half for the next 2 months which is great! However, the studio wasn't profitable to begin with, and the owner is being forced to eat 100% of that rental charge out of her own personal finances which are dwindling quickly like everyone else's are right now I am sure. Yoga teachers are not employees, so at least up here in Canada, there is no help from the federal government to give money to yoga studios to subsidize employee wages (because they're not employees, they're contractors). That's another discussion in itself, yoga teachers should definitely be employees with full health benefits imho but they're not and here we are. Case in point... we have a group of 10 yoga teachers all teaching for free, a small staff of energy exchanges who work for free and are currently helping setup the online streaming classes, and a studio owner who is left footing 100% of the bill for rent... with the occasional $5 donation being thrown her way. This is not sustainable. I have no problem not being paid as I wasn't being paid before all of this started. So I have no issue working for free. But the teachers will get tired of it eventually, and the owner simply can't afford to shell out the entire $2,000 check she will be getting from the government (that is meant to cover her food and living expenses) paying rent on the studio building. What should we do? What would you do? Declaring bankruptcy saving as much money as possible to secure a better location which will probably be available for rent at half the rate they are paying now once this all blows over is the best course of action I can think of at the moment and I really dislike that option very much. I thought I would look to yogaworks.com to see what they are doing with their group of 60+ studios under their purview, and apparently they're putting 80+ classes per day on youtube live streaming... all for free... https://www.yogaworks.com/classes/live/ They are owned by a large investment group now afaik so I am sure they can afford to pay their teachers for a few months yet without issue. What does a successful yoga studio look like in the current situation we all find ourselves in? What will a successful yoga studio look like in 2 months time? Thanks for reading. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Apr 2020 10:45 AM PDT I can hold crow pose decently well, but I am unable to side crow for even a second. Why do y'all think this is? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:25 AM PDT I have always wanted to do yoga and have started with a 15 minute program using an app during lockdown. I am so frustrated... during almost every pose today I just had self deprecating thoughts. Camel Pose: omg, have I already gained that much weight??? Reverse Table Top: more like a deep soup bowl! Forward fold? I can barely sit like this let alone fold??!! Does it get better? [link] [comments] |
