Today is my 60th consecutive day of Yoga practice!

    Posted: 21 May 2020 02:25 PM PDT

For me, one really great thing has come from this quarantine. I've practiced yoga for 60 days straight! I'm really proud of myself so I wanted to share with some people who would understand.

When I started I couldn't even touch my toes and now I can almost palm the ground. Of course, there are a variety of other improvements - too many to list! Overall, I look forward to my practice every day and have much more energy in my life.

I can't wait to continue on this journey. I recently started adding some reps at the end of my practice to help me on my way to doing a push up. Something I've never done before :)

I hope you all have a great day!

Why Can't My Body Do Yoga

    Posted: 21 May 2020 08:50 PM PDT

    I am so annoyed.

I get screamed at by schizoaffective voices (I take meds/see psychiatrist/therapist for this, it's being 'treated') the whole time I try to find appropriate yoga videos for guidance or read things about yoga or do anything in regards to yoga.

It's heartbreaking. I reason "the strength I will develop from fighting and winning against this force of disapproval will make me a strong yoga body" but it shouldn't be this way...should it?

Being told that I "am a loser" and "i know your body can't do yoga" the whole time I am trying to actually do yoga is really frustrating.

I took my first yoga classes around 2009, the first few went amazing. They were in a YMCA gym in the summertime and it was so hot it was like bikram. I didn't "totally nail" the poses but my body felt amazing. And then ever since, I've never been able to recreate that. I get screamed at by the voices, and my body just keeps resisting me harder and harder like it's actively working against my efforts to become a flexible yoga body.

I am actually desperate for advice. The yoga I am interested in is body size positive, Amber Kearne's Body Positive yoga stands out for the time being until I can get to a stronger, more flexible body at a smaller size and weight.

Oh neat, edited to add the "schizoaffective voice reply to this post": "it's because you have a penis, and yoga isn't for trans" OH LOLOLOL (sarcastic laughing) I am CIS FEMALE AND IT DOESN'T MATTER EITHER WAY YOGA OF ALL THINGS SHOULD BE ABOUT EQUALITY.

Yoga techniques with a knee injury

    Posted: 21 May 2020 08:43 PM PDT

My girlfriend recently hurt her knee (unrelated incident) and it is difficult to do a lot of the basic positions I know. We often practice together as I am fairly new to Yoga. Has anyone gone through similar experiences of injury? I wanted to get back to it together but I don't want to stress her knee. Thought it would be cool to learn somethings that could help her.

If anyone has routines, tricks or tips to overcome this injury and continue on, would be much appreciated.

    Posted: 21 May 2020 02:36 PM PDT

I'm new to yoga completely, but absolutely love it and know I want to teach/share with others the practice. What are some informational and easy read books on yoga? The history/importance of yoga and/or the actual positions and types of yoga. Thanks!

Question about correct application of Mulabhanda in this Chakra Shuddhi

    Posted: 21 May 2020 08:23 PM PDT

In this video around 1:58 - 4:16, instructions are unclear in terms of am I supposed to do mulabhanda while inhaling + release mulabhanda during exhale ... or inhale, do mulabhanda while holding the breath and release mulabhanda during exhale. I'd think the term "top of the breath" would imply the latter but I decided to check here first.

    Foam or cork yoga blocks?

    Posted: 21 May 2020 08:18 PM PDT

So I have one yoga block and was thinking about getting another. But I read somewhere that some blocks are cork instead of foam. Is one better than the other? Should I get a cork block or another foam block?

    Starting Yoga

    Posted: 21 May 2020 04:08 PM PDT

I've been wanting to start yoga for a very long time now, I went on and off for about a month and never really stuck with it. I have a very stiff, tense body and was wondering how can yoga help, and as a beginner how should I incorporate it into my life?

I’ve tried a bunch of different mats but my knees always hurt whenever I do a pose where all my weight is on one knee...why? I’m not injured.

    Prenatal Yoga and Sciatica

    Posted: 21 May 2020 10:15 AM PDT

Hey all! 36 weeks pregnant with baby #2 ❤️

I've been doing a combination of yoga, massage, and visiting the chiropractor to keep my sciatica at bay this pregnancy. I've been pretty consistent with doing at least 20 mins of prenatal yoga in the morning however it's obviously gotten more challenging as I've gotten further along. If I'm having a good day without too much inflammation, I'll do a more challenging (but still gentle) hour long practice that I love. I've been told by doctors there's not much I can do (other than what I'm already doing) as it's all about how baby is positioned. I'm at 36 weeks now and anytime I am supposed to stand on one leg or do a bird dog the pain is fairly bad on my left side. Prenatal yoga experts - do I just completely skip these types of exercises? Or is working through the pain a good thing just to get the blood flowing/moving to those problem areas? I know I'm not going to find a cure for the pain but I'd at least like to make this last month a little more bearable!!!

    TIA!!

Please recommend a Yin Yoga video

    Posted: 21 May 2020 12:50 PM PDT

I have regular yoga practice but I've never tried Yin yoga, and I fancy giving it a go to see whether it suits me.

If you could recommend one YouTube video, which one would it be? Why is that video a better introduction to yin than all the others listed above it in search results?

    Recommendations for pranayama

    Posted: 21 May 2020 03:35 PM PDT

My partner has recently shown an interest in yoga! This is amazing! But he wants to focus on the breathing aspect particularly, since he suffers from sleep apnea and read it could be very helpful. I've never dug very deeply into this aspect of yoga, beyond a few lion's breath or breath of fire here and there in Hatha or vinyasa practices.

Does anyone have recommendations for pranayama practice with maybe some gentle asanas on YouTube or one of the free sites? Have you done any that have really helped you?

    Lululemon mat color

    Posted: 21 May 2020 02:08 PM PDT

After reading many yoga mat reviews I would like to get a Lululemon reversible mat 5mm. Lots of people mention staining in their reviews of this mat so I'm wondering if getting a black mat is the best option. What are your experiences with stains on this mat? Thank you!

Low impact poses for lumbar disc herniation and sciatica

    Posted: 21 May 2020 12:59 PM PDT

My boyfriend had surgery for a lumbar disc herniation a year ago after suffering from pretty extreme sciatica. He also has always had really tight hamstrings, but not sure if thats related to everything else. He was feeling great for awhile after surgery, but recently the sciatica has flared up again. Don't worry he is following advice of his doctor, but one of the things doc suggested was yoga. I'm a super casual yoga practicer and don't want to give him bad advice that could worsen the problems. What are some low intensity poses he can try for his sciatica and tight hamstrings that also don't put his lumbar spine is a disc-compromising position?

Modifications/alternatives for down dog and plank

    Posted: 21 May 2020 12:24 AM PDT

Hi there! I am fairly new to yoga, but I have been practicing yoga at home for a while now, especially with quarantine, and I have been struggling due to a cyst in my wrist that stops me from putting weight on it when it's flat. It's not an issue when I'm doing table top because my weight is more evenly distributed between my lower and upper body, but with flows that have down dog and planks, I struggle a lot. I was wondering if anyone knew any good modifications or alternatives that I could use when doing flows, especially ones that go from down dog and have you swing legs through, because I find it cumbersome to do from child's pose. Any insight of mods/alternatives and/or good flows to do given my wrist condition would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! :)

[COMP] For online P.E. I had to do submit a photo of me doing a Garland Pose. I'm pretty sure I'm doing it wrong, but I think it's funny that it looks like I'm praying.
