I can't keep my legs straight during downward dog. What should I do? Posted: 30 May 2020 06:03 PM PDT For some weird reason, I can't ever keep my legs straight unless I'm standing completely up. If I bend even just a little bit, my legs also get bended. I think it's genetic because I still can't do it after 2 years of regular practice, and same thing happened to my mom too. So I was wondering what to do about the poses that require straight legs, such as downward dog. Should I skip those poses completely, or should I just try to do the pose exactly it is and keep them as straight as possible (the most straight I can keep them is about a 120° angle) or something else? I appreciate any tips and suggestions. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Shortcomings in the Down Dog app? What cues would you add? Posted: 30 May 2020 04:36 PM PDT I've been practicing yoga with Down Dog during the lockdown. In the app, there is a setting where you can choose more or less instruction (ie, more or fewer cues), and I have it set to maximum cueage. But I still get the exact same set of cues for every pose. I came across this excellent comment on /r/yoga, and it really made me realize the huge variety of cues that COULD be given to describe the same pose. If one cue doesn't click for me, another might...and yet I'll never have access to more/different cues than I'm getting in the app! So, yogis who use the Down Dog app and also have experience in the wider world of yoga, have you noticed any specific cues that you think should be in there? Any other shortcomings of Down Dog that you have noticed? [link] [comments] |
Popped knee pigeon pigeon pose Posted: 30 May 2020 07:23 PM PDT Today after my run I start my usually stretching routine. When I went down into pigeon pose on my right leg my knee made the most absurd cracking/popping noise. It scared me and I was waiting to feel pain like I broke something, but I didn't. As the day has gone on though my outer knee cap is very sore. Any idea what had happened and how to relieve it? [link] [comments] |

Back injury after returning to yoga (at 21) Posted: 30 May 2020 11:04 AM PDT After not doing yoga for about a year or two, I injured my back almost immediately upon starting up again at 21. I wasn't doing very difficult poses or anything (nothing inverted unless you count downward dog), but my upper back did feel weird when I would stretch my arms out in child's pose or up in chair pose. I ended up with a minor muscle sprain near one of my shoulder blades and my arm in a sling for a couple weeks. Has anything like this happened to anyone else? Or do I have some more serious back issues I should be looking into ☹️ Maybe I was hyper-extending my arms? For what it's worth, the only treatment my doctor recommended aside from pain management is that I KEEP DOING YOGA, and regularly 😆 [link] [comments] |
Video calling for yoga classes Posted: 30 May 2020 11:48 AM PDT Guy's, I'm a gym trainer and yoga teacher and since the lockdown my business has suffered massively. I'm looking at taking my classes online and have tried zoom and google hangout till now. Are there any better video calling apps which suit my purpose for gym and yoga to connect to my customers ? Yoga teachers - what is your go-to class playlist? Posted: 30 May 2020 01:51 PM PDT Okay, I have searched the web far and wide and mostly in response to this querry I get the same really basic, popular answers or many of them not inspiring at all. However, every time I've ever asked a yoga teacher about their playlists or go to a class the music is so on point. Can anyone help with a good flow playlist suggestions? Something with energy, but not so much energy as to be lifting weights to or sprinting... Ya know what I mean? [link] [comments] |
Practices for protecting knees and hips in meditation. Posted: 30 May 2020 04:51 AM PDT Hi, I practice quite a lot of sitting meditation, usually in a cross-legged 'burmese' (one leg in front of the other) pose and have done for many years. I've noticed that my legs are quite 'bowed' - I don't know whether they are more bowed due to years of sitting cross-legged. I intuitively feel that all the sitting isn't great for my knees - and indeed about a year ago I went for a few runs and had knee pain that was quite bad - the physio told me to rest for two weeks, and said it was probably due to sitting cross-legged etc. He suggested sitting cross-legged for less time. However, the pose feels very stable and useful and, unless I run, I don't really experience any issues with my knees in daily life. I am more concerned that problems might occur as I get older. I've taken up yoga more seriously recently - I was just wondering what poses might be protective for knees for one who sits cross-legged often? As an aside, I would like to be sitting in half-lotus more often - this feels even more stable and comfortable for the back - but I am worried again about causing knee damage in the long-term. Many thanks for reading, Peace, Oli [link] [comments] |
Squeeze muscles all the way through? Posted: 30 May 2020 08:12 AM PDT Newbie here, learning at home, like most of the newbies around the world rn. I'm wondering if I should be flexing my muscles with awareness throughout the practice or if I should relax and squeeze only when in the postures or never flex at all [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 May 2020 10:50 AM PDT Howdy, y'all!! So, I have a couple of issues with maintaining the "Easy Pose". Mainly back pain (1.) and feeling off balance (2.). Please note I've only been doing yoga regularly (2-4x per week but striving for daily) for about 7 months.
Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 May 2020 01:56 AM PDT So, I'm interested to know what positions people use for their savasana. I find lying flat on my back on the floor uncomfortable and usually bend my knees. Is child's pose an acceptable position? [link] [comments] |
Yoga pranayama (breathing) when we seek low energy positive state of mind. Posted: 30 May 2020 04:10 AM PDT Hello! I'm new to yoga and especially yoga breathing techniques but with the little experience i have i can say they helped me so much with my everyday life and feeling better. Now i came with an idea to using pranayama for helping me rock climbing. As i imagine most of the people here aren't climbers i will explain the best i can what i really seek for. So before a climb there is a common issue that you feel anxious and stressed because of the fear of failing and just setting up too much expectations on yourself. That's a simple thing however it's hard to control my emotions to a degree that i just don't care. The best state of mind you need to be is relaxed and having no expectations just going as hard as you can when climbing, but on the other hand you need to be very precise and accurate with your feet and hands and that's why in the literature it's described as a low energy positive state of mind that you need to be in. If you're just too psyched and too energetic you tend to rush thinks up and that's bad. Searching in the internet i found Nadhi sodhana which is described as helping to decease anxiety, stress and also help.you fall asleep easier. I think this can be helpful but on the other hand i feel too chilled after experimenting with that before climbing and also feeling a little bit lazy which is preventing me to achieve the maximum performance. So if there are some people knowledgeable and more experienced than me in those things please recommend me a technique that you think might help. Thank you so much. Namaste [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 May 2020 07:24 AM PDT Hi reddit yogis. I've kept a daily home yoga practice for the past three years, starting from a complete noob and advancing modestly over time. During quar, I've had the privilege of working from home, which means I'm practising more (yay!). One thing that's really disrupting my flow is the intense strain I feel across the bottom of my feet, most often crescent pose (the back foot, my front foot is usually fine), and weirdly, sometimes in standing wide-legged forward fold. I always make sure that I'm warmed up and not stretching cold. I don't have the most pronounced arch in my feet, but apart from some bouts with plantar fasciitis a few years back, when I learned the value of quality footwear/insoles, I'm usually pain-free. What gives/any suggestions to lesson this? It's such a buzzkill to have to come out of a pose because the pain is so sharp. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a Yoga video that is safe for the hip Posted: 30 May 2020 01:30 AM PDT Dear r/yoga , during the last 10 weeks of social distancing my family got into the routine of doing yoga once a week. I did Yoga in a studio for a few years, but of course they've all been closed now. So my family supported me in doing a weekly routine that was suitable for beginners also. But out of the blue I got hip problems. My doctors appointment is on tuesday, but we would love to do a very safe routine on sunday, just to be together, move together, have fun together. My main problem is, when my leg rotates outwards, like in lotus position. So a routine, that doesn't have any of these movements would be optimal. If there are some, I don't mind going into childs pose for a minute or two. At the moment it is more about the feeling of being together as a family than doing physically straining exercises. If someone of you feels comfortable to share a video of a nice and calm yoga session with us, me and my family would be very happy. (please ignore my mistakes, I'm not a native English speaker) [link] [comments] |
Manduka lifetime warranty -- do we need a proof of purchase? Posted: 30 May 2020 02:11 AM PDT Broke yogi here! Has anyone put this warranty to use? Just wondering how it would apply for mats purchased via third-party sellers or on things like Craigslist... Been saving my pennies for a new mat because my cheap TPE one is getting dangerously slippery but Manduka's RRP is way expensive where I live (I want a Pro for the long-haul). I'm prioritising mainly durability...as someone who practices every other day and sweats a LOT (even though I don't do hot/vinyasa) I'm less inclined to go for a Jade or B-mat since I heard they wear out quicker and I really can't afford to replace a $$$ mat every couple of years. :( [link] [comments] |
