Posted: 14 May 2020 04:39 AM PDT So I (48M) was introduced to yoga about 10 years ago. My lower back was giving me problems and I experienced some work related stress. My first yoga class felt like heaven. At the end of the 90-minute class, I was laying down in Savasana feeling as relieved as Edward Norton in Fight Club after his first therapy session. Amazing. After a couple of months my back pain was gone, life went on, and somehow I did not schedule the yoga classes into my agenda anymore. And then the back pain returned. I remembered how yoga helped me and started doing Sun Salutations at home. As I was in Downward Facing Dog pose, I realized I didn't know if I had to stretch my legs or not, put my feet & hands flat on the floor or balance on my toes or fingers, how to align my back, when to breathe in or out…. I needed guidance. Searching the web and YouTube led me to some video tutorials, but the quality did not seem very convincing. Not all instructors seemed to be qualified teachers, guidance was not as detailed as I expected, and teachers were breathing severely into the lavalier mic which did not make it very attractive to watch. The idea to fill this gap emerged. I work at an advertising agency. Producing video and building websites is what we do. I pitched the idea to some colleagues, and everyone got enthusiastic about it. We decided to give it a go and work on it in our own time. We had to find a qualified yoga teacher and were very lucky to meet Irene. She really focuses on alignment and posture, and had always felt the need among her students for exactly this kind of information. We analyzed search volume in Google and decided to start producing tutorials for the 30 poses that people search for the most. It took us about two years to get where we are today. Writing the detailed scripts, producing the videos, designing & building the website, initiate social media channels and producing social media content. And now Yoga Screen is finally live! So the next step would be to produce more tutorials, we're also thinking about an app that allows you to build your own practice, based on your specific needs (back problems, stress, flexibility, etc.). To cover hosting costs we wanted to put Google Ads on the website, but they don't accept us for some reason. So we decided to produce an e-book and sell it online, which will hopefully generate some kind of revenue to take the platform to the next step. All tutorials are available on our YouTube channel and we encourage yoga studios around the world to share them with their students, as Covid-19 forces most studios to stay closed. Hope you enjoy our tutorials! [link] [comments]

| Posted: 14 May 2020 05:38 PM PDT Hey all. I'm just finishing up my 200 hour certification to be a yoga teacher! I'm already getting to opportunities to teach and it's awesome! Except that I'm the worst teacher in my class and the only reason I'm getting offers is the way I look and that I fit a "Type" while most other people in my class are struggling to find yoga teacher work in this climate. How do you deal with the knowledge that you don't deserve the opportunities you're being given, and that people who are absolutely "inspired" teachers and practitioners and are more deserving than you are getting passed over in on favor of you? | Is it weird that I miss touch adjustments? Posted: 14 May 2020 11:29 AM PDT It's rather odd for me to say this as even pre-Covid 19 I had a rather "expansive" notion of personal space, so I don't like people trespassing on it without wanting them to beforehand. I am a total novice at Yoga anyway, but when I first started getting into yoga I requested not to be touched initially (they had those cue cards where you could signal whether you wanted to be 'adjusted' or not). But later on I decided that I want to be a bit more comfortable with allowing 'others' to platonically touch when appropriate. I switched the card one session to say that I now welcome adjustment from my teacher. I soon realised that it wasn't so bad. In fact, it felt good and I liked it very much. The pleasure wasn't sexual and she wasn't inappropriate (I think my height and size would intimidate deter most from touching me inappropriately so I wasn't worried about that) but it did feel sensual. When she did adjust me I could tell she was at first taking care (again the fact that I basically tower over everyone in class I think contributes to this). Nonetheless, I still liked it. It felt so soothing; made me less tense. Her hands felt so soft and gentle. It wasn't oppressive or imposing. It just felt nice. I can't describe it in any other way than nice. That's when I really enjoyed Yoga, because it was a place where I could get sensual, yet non-sexual platonic touch. Honestly, it made Yoga a whole more comfortable and withered my nerves. But then Covid-19 happened, so I have to do Yoga at home now. I didn't think the touch adjustments would be one of the things I would miss about class. It made me think about when the 'new normal' happens if there will be any touching in Yoga at all for a while because of social distancing and the fear this pandemic had engendered. We know touching and personal boundaries has been an issue in yoga for a while because of #MeToo and some of the scandals involving big shot gurus. I'm young and a novice so I haven't been in the Yoga world for long, but it makes me wonder if there has been less touching in Yoga compared to a few decades because of the things mentioned above. Clearly, professional boundaries are needed and consent is crucial, but touch adjustments still have their place, and when desired can make one feel good too. [link] [comments] |
| Need some help from you guys :/ Posted: 14 May 2020 08:00 PM PDT I seem to be always thinking the worse case scienero whenever something negative happens :( it sucks. And it drains me mentally.. What are somethings you guys do to help you get over this? I've been doing yoga, some meditation, and getting exercise whenever I start to overthink.. | Mat that a dog's nails can't destroy? Posted: 14 May 2020 03:00 PM PDT I'm looking for a new mat. My dog likes to hang out when I do yoga and often ends up stretching (down dog!) on my mat and scratching/clawing it. Does anyone know of a mat that could handle this sort of thing? I've been looking at the Manduka Pro Lite and I saw at least one post that said it held up to cat claws, so that seems promising. Any comments on the slipperiness issue of Manduka ProLite are welcome as well! I'm not that concerned because I don't do hot yoga or get particularly sweaty, and I think I'd prefer to be able to slide between poses more easily--I don't *think* I need a ton of grip--but would love to hear any thoughts. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 May 2020 09:45 AM PDT Hey all. Anyone willing to share their go-to yoga music playlists? My daily practice time has now exceeded my personal playlist length so I need some new songs to add! Hit me up with your Spotify/Apple/Youtube lists! Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 May 2020 01:30 PM PDT I started yoga during lockdown (hey bandwagon! 👋🏻 😄) and when I've done it I really enjoy it. I'm not super consistent with it but allowing myself to be lazy too. Any tips on motivating yourself to do yoga regularly? Also I have really tight calf's and hamstrings (I have muscly legs - it's a family trait - and before yoga most of my exercise was hiking, strength training and football). I also had an injury to my left knee in a motorbike accident 5 years ago and it's been weakened as a result. I can't straighten them out on the floor when sitting, I can't reach my toes from standing and when trying to do sitting poses where I learn over, I'm practically still sat up. Any tips on loosening them? Thank you! :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 May 2020 05:10 PM PDT I have some minimal bulging in my L3-L4 disc, yoga has helped with the pain but its still present and often times noticeable during my practice. I have been doing some strong Vinyasa sequences and its my style of choice for morning workout. There is a lot of forward folding and some days are causing me more discomfort than others. Not sure what i can do. Anyone else having a hard time with this? [link] [comments]
Extreme Pain Points in Uttanasana Posted: 14 May 2020 05:00 PM PDT When I am folded over in Uttanasana (standing forward fold) and I breathe in very, very deeply I get extreme, hyper-located pain points that feel kind of how I imagine getting shot with a BB gun might feel, and the occasional flashing, painful back spasms. I have a long history of neck and shoulder pain overall, and I have practiced yoga for most of my life. I also have asthma. The feeling is so intense, I feel like I am pushing breath into a pocket of something that hasn't been touched in years. I sometimes immediately have to let go of the pose, other times I can breathe through it s little longer. Any thoughts on what could be causing this and what to do? [link] [comments]
Looking for a resource that explains which asanas help with which illneses Posted: 14 May 2020 04:45 PM PDT I would like to find a resource that explains which poses help with certain ailments so i can use in conjunction with my other modalities that I study. Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 May 2020 06:45 AM PDT Hi, anyone have experience with the Down Dog app? I'm completely new to yoga and downloaded the app for a trial period. It looks really good, however I have nothing to compare it to. I did a couple of YouTube yoga workouts but got a bit annoyed with the ads, constant talking and explaining things, along with opinions and stuff. I also thought it's better to have a voiceover giving the instructions instead of the presenter/yogi talking whilst doing the poses. With the DD app, you simply choose an experience level, duration, intensity, add any 'boosts' you want such as extra focus on lower back or hips for example, then just press Go, and the workout just begins. No talking (apart from instructions), no "Hey, what's up guys, today we're going to be.... subscribe to my channel, etc.". Seems good but I dont know if there's anything considered better out there. Thanks [link] [comments]
Is it normal for yoga to cause tightness/aches in hip that lasts more than a week? Posted: 14 May 2020 03:18 PM PDT Hi All! I've practiced yoga sporadically over the years and I just started doing it for 30 minutes every other day in the last month. I have tight hip flexors from ample sitting so I've really push it in poses like pigeon. I think I over did it because the outside after a hip centered practice my right hip felt tight/achey, almost as if it was tightening up in reaction. I wouldn't say it was painful, more tight/achey/sensitive. It felt more isolated than your average soreness and it was enough for me to take a break for a week and a half and to take a few hot baths. It wasn't bad enough for me to limp, but I didn't feel like I had my full range of motion accessible. I just tried doing yoga again today but it still felt too tense. I tried googling what is wrong, but the only things I can find about yoga hip injuries are when teachers are at it for years and wear down cartilage, which definitely wouldn't apply here. I asked my friend who is a PT and she suggested it's just sore, but I won't be able to go see anyone in person soon for obvious reasons. I'm really antsy to get back at it so I'm seeking advice on how to help it. I am not sure if this is something familiar to you all and requires a long break, or if I need to do some light stretching to loosen up my hip again. Mods I am new, so if this breaks the rules I apologize. Thank you for any advice you all can give! TLDR: Is it normal for one hip to feel achey for 1 week plus after you over do a stretch? Is the solution rest or more stretching? [link] [comments]
How does a beginner use light on yoga? Posted: 14 May 2020 03:12 PM PDT I browsed some of the FAQ channels that were said we're good but I actually prefer text guides with pictures like light on yoga. How does a beginner start doing these??? [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 May 2020 09:07 AM PDT Today I followed a YouTube tutorial and completed my first yoga session at home, I was a bit wobbly and it was harder than I expected but I absolutely loved it and felt really calm and happy afterwards. I can't wait to do another one tomorrow. [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 May 2020 02:25 PM PDT Is it normal for triangle pose to cause so much pain in the feet? Both me and my mrs have experienced this. Are we doing something wrong? [link] [comments]
Pain in left hip when I sit across legged or in butterfly stretch Posted: 14 May 2020 01:50 PM PDT Best I can describe it is it kinda feels like there's a chunk of muscle getting pinched in my left hip joint and it hurts quite a bit, it's not a stretching pain. Any ideas as to what's going on and how to fix it? Happens in other positions sometimes too but cross-legged and butterfly are the big ones. [link] [comments]
Protecting my wrists as I work up to wheel? Posted: 14 May 2020 10:00 AM PDT Hey everyone! I've been doing yoga for a while now (around 7 years on and off) and have never really embraced wheel pose due to the strain it puts on my wrists. Is there a way to work on stabilization so it doesn't feel like my wrists are wrecked afterwards? [link] [comments]
