Posted: 01 Jun 2020 11:32 AM PDT If you're anything like me, you've spent years exercising and developing your physical health. But be honest, how much time have you spent training your brain to improve your mental health? It seems like the overwhelming majority of us have not invested efforts into 'working out' our brain. We may have done a whole lot of thinking about our negative mental health, but just thinking about it isn't enough. What would you say to an overweight person who has spent years thinking and planning on losing weight? Just start. Start doing the hard actions that will get you to your goal. Thinking about it is not hard. Its easy. That's why you can do it 24/7 but it doesn't result in fat loss or muscle gains. The same can be said about the rest of us who have not actively went out of our way to do the equivalent of bicep curls for the brain. I think our physical and mental health are quite similar so you are going to hear a lot of exercise analogises because I think they fit so well here. So.... the question everyone is thinking - How do we train our brain? And what are we even training for? There are (in my opinion) two ways we can exercise our brain
Lets start with mindfulness I believe this exact process is like one bicep curl for the brain: Being mindful of the present - mind wanders into thought - 'realisations of unmindfulness' - reconcentrate on present moment This act of re-concentrating on the present is like one rep, one bicep curl for the brain. You will have the opportunity to do this every few seconds because our minds wander so quickly. Keep getting those reps in. Be sure to view these 'realisations of unmindfulness' as opportunities, chances to get back into the present moment. Do not judge them negatively. They are a positive thing if you act on them. We can improve our mindfulness not only in meditation but during our everyday lives following the same technique. Whether you are brushing your teeth, exercising, eating, just reconcentrate on the present moment when you have a 'realisation of unmindfulness'. Simply try to focus on what your senses are feeling right this millisecond. What about developing knowledge of thought patterns? Here is a somewhat insulting fact: You are not special. Whatever thought or emotion you feel has been felt by many humans before you. The beauty of humans is that we share our experiences, we communicate, especially on the internet. So, why don't you use the internet to your advantage? A beginner starting their exercise journey should be actively seeking knowledge to develop their workout plan, learning new exercises, perfecting their form, discussing in a community and reading quality informational material on the topic. Its the exact same for someone wanting to improve their thoughts and emotions. You might not have ever thought about this before but try this one thing and I am sure you will find improvements to your mental health... Literally Google your symptoms. What kind of thought patterns are you having? Google them. Find blogs, Ted talks, discussions on Reddit, even Tweets about your thought patterns. There's always an opportunity to learn more. Seeing an active discussion about your specific thoughts will remind you that you are not alone, that the thoughts and emotions you are having is actually quite normal and widespread in humans. Identifying your symptoms and writing them out can leave you feeling uncomfortable. That's a good thing. That is development. Admitting exactly what you feel is wrong and perhaps feeling embarrassed to search for help is a step in the right direction. Try to counteract this feeling of uncomfort with excitement. You are finally taking HARD active steps to improving your mental space. Well done. [link] [comments] |

Try the Pyramid technique to increase your meditation session time everyday Posted: 01 Jun 2020 06:28 AM PDT As a fellow novice myself i would like to share a trick with other beginners who find it difficult to build a good meditation practise. I think it will help u guys build a good foundation for meditation/mindfulness Few years back when i was trying to reach higher reps while doing pullups and i came across this technique called the Pyramid. Gymfreaks will know this, u start with 1 rep, rest a few seconds then do 2 reps, rest for few seconds and then 3 and so on. Aftee u reach ur peak say 10 for example, then u start going backwards like 10,9,8 reps Same can be done for meditation. If you're comfortable with lets say 10 mins, u can meditate for 10mins or start lower at the 5mins mark, then take a break instead of pushing urself further and then try for 11-15mins next session and so on. If u feel ur pushing it too far then start winding down backwards by decreasing the time. Yes it is very time consuming but it helps build a very stable base for meditation. Hope this helps, if anyone would like to add anything else to this technique let me know [link] [comments] |

How I clear my mind when distracted Posted: 01 Jun 2020 09:49 PM PDT I'll admit I'm relatively new to meditating, but I typed this for another thread and realized it was out of context. Image the layout of your room/whatever relative to your current position along with your body, It will form a very faint image [also how blind people can sometimes 'see'], afterwards focus on your ass and feet and how they support you make contact, finally go back to whatever mindfulness you were doing. This is not meant to be an alternative to any meditation. Unless your thought patterns are problematic I find relatively little value in observing thoughts over mindfulness [link] [comments] |

What does successful meditation feel like? Posted: 02 Jun 2020 01:27 AM PDT I've heard people say that successful meditation feels like loss of awareness. The fact that they forgot that they were meditating. I'm sorry but isn't the whole point of meditating to become as aware as possible? To not get lost in thought, and just focus on the present moment by focusing on your breathing? Isn't this why martial artists meditate before fighting? So that their mind becomes hyper aware during combat? How do you know if you're doing it right? The only time I've experienced loss of awareness is if I focus on something....like coding or listening to some ultra amazing song. That's when I get immersed within that activity. And I feel a sense of calm when I experience any type of immersion like that. Is that what meditation is supposed to feel like? How are you supposed to feel like that when you're supposed to only focus on your breathing? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2020 08:54 AM PDT Recently my older brother died at 30 years old in a terrible car accident. It's been really difficult for me to meditate because everytime I go into my inner world all I see is him. I'm having a difficult time to detach myself from this heavy emotions I'm going through. I can't meditate cuz I can't let myself go from my mind. I feel like I'm stuck in all these emotions and can't focus or concentrate while I want to meditate. Any advice will help. Thanks in advance. Meditation and cannabis, tool or hindrance? Posted: 01 Jun 2020 11:47 AM PDT About a year ago I started getting into meditation. The process was made exceptionally by anxiety. Weather or not you realise this, you probably are anxious pretty persistently. This is due to advanced cognitive dissonance techniques that have been applied to make you this way. If weed gives you any anxiety, forget about using it to meditate. Keep in mind that meditation has nothing to do with conforming to anything preconceived. It has to do with being in the present moment, with a clear and open mind(from my understanding) and many of you experience this as "autopilot" when lost in thought, not paying close attention to what you are doing but even though no effort or even thought is required you navigate traffic seamlessly. Use this feeling to identify when you are in the state. Weed for me has helped me achieve a great level of enlightenment. Learn to treat the plant with respect, know that you already know everything you need to. You just have to put the pieces together in the right orientation. [link] [comments] |
Tremors/shaking while meditating Posted: 01 Jun 2020 08:58 PM PDT I am wondering if there are any proven techniques to calm extreme involuntary shaking/tremors while meditating. Deep breathing while focusing on the muscles has only helped to a certain extent. Thanks [link] [comments] |
I know there are many types of meditation but... Posted: 01 Jun 2020 06:37 PM PDT How should one practice it at it's core? Some people say you're supposed to observe your thoughts without letting yourself drift away. Others say you should concentrate on the breath and bring the mind back when it has wandered away. I feel like, for instance, watching the breath is, in itself, a conceptualization of the breathing sensation and you sort of visualize this concept in constantly changing ways. So the mind is never "purely" doing anything. It's always in a sort of chain of awareness that dominoes itself into different states. Emptying the mind seems impossible as "the empty mind" itself is a concept that we have sort of constructed ourselves. I have achieved relaxing states when attempting to practice meditation, but I'm not sure if this is more to do with the breathing aspect of things. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2020 11:47 PM PDT When you love someone who doesn't love you back, when you lose someone who meant the world to you, when you pour your heart out to someone and don't get any response, when someone just disappears out of your life, when you feel rejected by someone who used to love you and accept you like noone else did, when you lose your dearest friend - how do you deal with that? I woke up today at 5.45 with a severe panic attack and couldn't go back to sleep. My heart was racing and I had this burning feeling in my solar plexus. I was lying in my bed and I felt this rejection with my whole body. I got up and did a 30-minute session, tears streaming down my cheeks, feeling sorry for myself and for all of humanity. I'm so angry with this person for abandoning me. I want to forgive him for that and it is so difficult. I want to wish him happiness but instead I'm so full of hateful thoughts and words that I wish I could scream at him. I don't want to feel like this but I do and I wish I could forgive myself for that. I want to punch him in the face so badly. I want him to suffer. I want him to be completely unhappy and miserable and at the same time I want to be kind, forgiving, accepting and understanding. How do I make sense of that? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2020 10:38 AM PDT I know I'm doing it well when I'm in the middle of my meditation session and I realise that... I don't need my eyes to see. I don't need sight. That is enough. Feeling and sensing and experiencing life is enough. Being alive is enough. Have you ever experienced something similar while meditating? [link] [comments] |
Can meditation be a cause for world peace? Posted: 01 Jun 2020 12:54 PM PDT I'm serious right now when I say that meditation could be the way to world peace. It'd like the post on the front page saying all of mans problems come from a lack to sit alone in the quiet. If everyone on earth were to meditate everyday, would it cause world peace? Of course not everyone is open to this idea but I have hope that through peace and nonviolence we can stop all the fighting and just be. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2020 10:23 PM PDT So I just meditated and I seen colors and it almost looked as if I seen stars like in the night sky. When I open my eyes and I look at a bright light it's not bright enough... usually it would be to bright to even look at it. My heart when I was meditating started pounding and I felt like I was going to feel some new feeling of excitement like I was 9/10ths there but couldn't reach it yet. I'm new to meditation and I'm trying to open my third eye please help or tell me what just happened. Please. [link] [comments] |
40 Years of Meditation in 15 Minutes Posted: 01 Jun 2020 03:29 PM PDT Ex-Harvad professor, psychologist and activist, Timothy Leary takes us to the edge of the universe in The Psychedelic Experience. The Bible, Torah and Koran are full of riddles and hidden messages meanwhile the Tibetan Book of the Dead declassifies famous accounts of near death experiences and spiritual awakenings, which in most religion is kept hidden by the clergy. Yogis, transcendental mediators and psychonauts corroborate Leary's findings of cured life-long addiction and neurogenesis. All practices that Christ was rumored to have engaged in during his lost years wandering and holistically healing the people of India. In this book review Leary picks up the ball on humanities biggest running secret of where we go when the lights turn off. Peace when neighbor is listening to loud music? Posted: 01 Jun 2020 09:30 AM PDT I'm working home office and I work with data analisys, which means I need focus and attention. Then the neighbor decides to share his musical taste with everyone else 1pm on a monday I know the problem is how I react instead of what I am reacting to, but this is too invasive, is there any way to go around this? Mentally? Thanks for the time, peace [link] [comments] |
Osho dynamic meditation alternative Posted: 01 Jun 2020 09:14 PM PDT Hey folks, osho dynamic meditation is one of the few things that really helped me express my trauma in a safe way. I would love continuing it but the availability of spaces that are hold specifically for that meditation is scarce and due to covid the spaces that are offering it are closed for the next few months. It's important for me because I got bullied at my workplace last year and it really traumatized me, it's coming up in every new workplace I try out and thus gets me fired pretty quickly. Its bothering me and I can't do the practice that works best for me. My current plan is to try and find stillness with meditating and yoga by myself, with a little help of mushrooms in the nature. I also plan on going to therapy to talk about my past but I'm very reluctant since I again don't want to be in a vulnerable place with someone that has a great amount of power over me (therapist). Do you feel there is sth. else I could do ? Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
I wrote this when I, addled with ADHD, discovered meditation Posted: 01 Jun 2020 05:22 PM PDT I lived within the chatter, that which rattled in my mind All my thoughts and ideas bouncing fully trouncing my resolve I'd wrack my brain for answers but it dances out of time had no power of my will, a bitter pill and bitter cold A saboteur pervert, not the servant I desired Enraptured by a shining or the dying of a fire A maladjusted toddler, a fondler and tired Just a desperate old testament, a fatso and a liar The chatter ran like batter til I sat down on the floor And the whining was complying by the time I closed my eyes And the demons started leavin when their playground was no more I focus deeper, I'm the keeper of a silence and it flies The struggle causes trouble and it never will abate But I'm stronger and the longer this goes on it feeds that trait For no matter what the chatter has in store and can create I'm the steward, I am fluid, I'm the master of my fate [link] [comments] |

Anyone have a troubling relationship with loving kindness? Posted: 01 Jun 2020 04:33 PM PDT I'm wondering if anyone experiences this or has insights: When among others, I want to have a presence of loving kindness. However of course I'm not always in touch with loving kindness in an embodied way. Often I think I'm experiencing maybe a predominantly fight or flight or shutdown state around others or alone. In other words, experiencing feelings of fear and sometimes aggression, heightened by interpersonal interaction. At the same time I might have an urge to send loving words or a kind look.. though it sometimes feels a bit unnatural. Like I don't know what to do or say in this moment so maybe I'll try to just send a kind expression.. but then possibly in another moment I'll get swept up in my fear of rejection and perhaps say something kind of bitchy or off putting. Another worry: do people around me become deeply uncomfortable because of this striving, covering over, inconstancy? Just a note, I have a bpd diagnosis. I suppose the most basic course is to allow these internal experiences to arise and pass away naturally (without acting in a harmful way)... I'm not sure. I feel confused by social interactions in general. Sometimes upon parting with an acquaintance or friend I feel the urge to send well wishes, messages of love, such as "I hope your evening is filled with love and joy!" But not sure if this is appropriate sometimes... am I just people pleasing? Does this make people uncomfortable? Sometimes I find it difficult to pick up on social cues because I'm wrapped up in feelings of being on display and performing normalcy.. I'm afraid of being judged for any and all of what I've mentioned here, that's for sure. Haha very scattered thoughts but insight or connection is welcome [link] [comments] |
