[Question] If I have tight spots is it better to specifically target those areas consistently or will they eventually correct themselves by just practicing yoga overall?

Is it better to practice daily or every other day?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 12:41 PM PDT

So just for context I've been using the DownDog App in the Intermediate 1 level for 2 months. Recently I've started to notice that my muscles are more sore after doing yoga than how they were a month or so ago. But shouldn't my body get more used to it with time? So I'm afraid that I'll hurt myself if I keep practicing everyday for 1 hour. I've been practicing every other day so that I give myself time to "heal" but I don't know what to do lol. Should I keep it like this?

Question: Is anyone else unable to reach the floor during a lunge?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 03:34 PM PDT

(I've looked through the FAQ and searched past posts, but didn't see mention of this.)

So you know when you're lunging and your arms are framing your front foot? And your knee is pressed into your chest?

Everyone at my yoga studio, and people in every video I've ever seen, touch the mat while doing this.

This confounds me. My fingertips can barely scrape the mat, even with my arms fully extended. I can't go any lower because, well, my knee is jammed into my chest.

    Am I a T-Rex???

Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a work-around?

As soon as a practice starts involving a lot of these lunge positions, I'm completely thrown out of the flow. ): The position hurts my back to boot.

Can’t do wide angled seated forward bend really well?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 06:54 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm wondering what parts of my body may be preventing me from doing a wide angled seated forward bend well. I'm confused bc I can fully do the seated and reclined bound angle pose and can comfortably do pigeon, so I have good hip flexibility in that respect but just can't seem to do the wide angled seated forward bend. If it means anything, my torso is relatively short and my legs are quite long, not sure if that has much of an effect? It's like my back just can't go forwards. Could this perhaps be requiring a different part of the hips to the bound angle and reclined bound angle and pigeon?

    Thanks :)

[COMP] Today I did tripod headstand for the first time! My neck and wrist are a bit sore after, is this normal or am I doing something wrong? Please feel free to give feedbacks or tips on how I can do it better. I wanna be able to do a forearm handstand next.

Is it bad to only do one routine?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 01:55 PM PDT

I do yoga as a companion to my running practice. For maybe 2 years I was doing a variety of videos from Yoga with Adrienne on YouTube (live in a small town so no classes). I picked up yoga as an activity/ way to condition my body after a heavy injury picked up while doing a marathon that stopped me running for over a year.

That brings me to 2020. Over the past few months I've been upping my mileage and have been doing one video of Adriennes, specifically a 30 minute video for lower back pain to try prevent an injury in my back that may stop me from running.

Well last week I pulled my back and was bed bound for 6 days.

I was wondering if this was unlucky, or if doing one 30 minute yoga practice 3 times a week for three months lead to maybe working my muscles in one direction and reduced flexibility? Any thoughts? Do I need variety in my practice?

Advice for doing yoga outside in a public space?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 08:03 AM PDT

I'm a big person, and where I currently live there's just no space to do yoga inside. The ceiling is only a few inches above my head and there are no rooms with enough space to stretch out on the ground. So, I will have to do yoga outside.

My problem is just that, doing yoga outside in a public space. I'm new to doing yoga, I only started briefly last year for a few months then I moved to this small space. Only recently has the weather been nice enough to go outside, and well... Frankly I am embarrassed to do yoga outside in a city where it's noisy & everyone can see me.

I don't have an mat or any real yoga clothes. I'm getting stressed our being unable to do yoga inside, and doing it outside seems too uncomfortable for me, but it's at a point where I just need to do yogax again.

My question is: What are some tips and advices on doing yoga in a public space, such as a park, with no mat and social anxiety?

Everytime I do yoga I feel like crying

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 07:55 AM PDT

As the title says , Everytime I do yoga or even stretch I feel like crying . Especially when it has to do with my hips... I know yoga can make you feel emotions you've buried down , but it's so weird . I'll start a pose and then I'll notice that I feel like crying , and I become aware of it and I feel it then it just goes away . I've been doing yoga for 7 months now and this started 2/3 months ago and it would happen here and there , but now it's happening every time. Could someone explain what this means or have any idea what's going on ? Please and thank you :)

    Yoga for hiatus hernia/chest pain?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 04:34 PM PDT

Hello all. I've been doing at-home yoga and today, I am having some particularly bothersome chest pains/upper back pains. I know that pressure during inversions can upset my condition and similar ones. The main thing I'm wondering, as a beginner, are there any good videos to follow along with that would be gentle on stomach and chest pains? There aren't a lot of videos that specifically cite hiatus hernia so if you know of anything similar that you've enjoyed i'd appreciate a link :)

    Yoga and breathing

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 03:53 PM PDT

Yoga is a combination of movement and meditation. The key is, they say, breathing. But sometimes when I try especially the "hard poses", I find myself stop breathing. If this is the case, I become confused how to regulate my breathing and whether I should focus on strengthening my muscles or breathing? What do you suggest?

Newer yoga teacher - I believe my current studio is underpaying me?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 09:24 AM PDT

I know there is a subreddit for yt but it is pretty much inactive so I thought maybe some teachers on here could give me insight ? 17 years of yoga practice and got my RYT late 2019- also took yin and restorative training and do a lot of other continuing education classes online.

I interviewed with a studio and they were super eager to sign me on and gave me 6 classes a week and said I could teach as many more as I would like- for $15 a class 60 minute classes.

On top of this they said originally i would be paid even if no one signed up or showed up for a class but in a separate conversation they said I need at least 1 student to get paid. Many of the classes have 0 students - understandable with covid shutdowns people are nervous about going out. I have yet to be paid for my first week of classes ( I am 10-99) and now they are ignoring emails about my paycheck and schedule. I met other teachers at the studio and some of them don't have any certification or insurance which is a bit of a shock.

Should I be asking for better compensation or just suck it up because I am a newer teacher ?

Looking for a large towel for hot yoga

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 02:12 PM PDT

I have to Lululemon large mat (85x29") and am having a really hard time finding a towel to use for hot yoga classes. I sweat a ton and have been using a big beach towel. But it's not quite big enough and moves around during practice. Any advice?
