First offline class after lock down!

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 04:21 PM PDT

Today I teached my first class after two month online only. It was wonderful to be in a real room with a real yogi! Sense for needs, borders and possibilities was so much more connected to perception and intuition compared to the use of a TV screen and my mind only.

We are social beings. That class had a great impact towards this truth for me: looking at all my senses and what it helps to hmm create. Whole body experience!

I am looking forward for the next class!

PS: hope I was able to give a picture of what I felt, I am from Germany, not a native English speaker

What progress can I expect / did you experience from 45 mins of Yoga a day?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 12:07 PM PDT

I am a beginner. I am doing 45 mins of Yoga (with Adriene) a day: 15 in the morning, half an hour before dinner.

What kind of progress can I expect in terms of flexibility, strength and muscle growth?

And what was your progression like with a similar amount of daily Yoga?

I have a madman's dream of attaining healthy, comfortable body posture.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 11:33 AM PDT

That's my entire reason for starting yoga. I want to sit up straight without straining my back, and not feel insecure about my soggy noddle spine when I'm in public.

Well versed as I am in what's wrong with my body, I just can't stay motivated doing the same stretches and exercises every day, especially when I don't see any results.

I've just started following youtube videos with an emphasis on posture (such as this, this, and this), and I'm really enjoying it. In terms of posture improvement, the strategy is a little more baroque than doing hip stretches and planks bridges for 5 minutes a day, but much more enjoyable. Relaxing too.

Has anyone else sought yoga to help with their posture? What have your results been?

Why Pigeon Pose is difficult for me?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 01:17 PM PDT

I started doing Pigeon Pose today while doing basic back bend poses.

Before doing Pigeon Pose, thought it is one of the easiest pose and tried it. It is not so easy for me.

When I started going into pose, my back leg hip was not touching down and lot of gal between hip and yoga mat.

    Any specific reason for it?

Because of lock down, focussing more on yoga poses from last one week.. practicing front bends from last one week and started basic back bends from yesterday. And able to make good progress with touching my head to knees in forward standing and sitting poses.

One week back, my thighs and hips were almost in a frozen state and even basic stretching of thighs and hips in some poses was causing lot of pain. But now able to stretch easily except Pigeon post.

Like to know your experiences as well with Pigeon pose and why it is so challenging.

    Pose, how long?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 12:51 PM PDT

Hi everyone! Two weeks ago I have started doing yoga by myself after a few months in a studio and a few challenges on YouTube. I do really enjoy going solo but here is my question : how long do you maintain each pose? I find it disturbing because while I focus on seconds/breaths, I cannot let it go and medidate properly. FYI I'm more interested in a challenging yoga than a restorative :) I thank you for your help and your daily positive energy ☀️

Am I too shallow for yoga or am I just not trying the right type?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 06:43 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I'd really appreciate some advice.

Due to covid, I can no longer work out at my gym so earlier this week I decided to start doing home workouts. I recognize how inflexible I am and also how important it is for me to combat the effects of sitting at a desk all day so I've been incorporating yoga routines into my home workout program. The problem is.. I absolutely hated it this week! I am NOT a spiritual person. At all. I pride myself on being realistic and I'm a big science person so my beliefs haven't mixed well with the classes I've taken. For example, I think it is extremely weird that the yoga instructors I've had this week begin class by telling us to thank ourselves for taking the time to do this or that they keep referencing finding my truth. My truth is I want to become more flexible and physically balanced. That's it.

I thought incorporating yoga would be more efficient than just finding a list of stretches to do because back in the day I once tried a restorative yin yoga class and loved it. It was through that class that I first experienced how focusing on your breath helps you stretch and I think I got more out of it than any stretching I'd previously done. But based on my research it doesn't seem like yin yoga would stretch everything I need to. I've been reading about muscles vs. connective tissue, etc. (I'm only a week in so if that's not true, please correct me!) Consequently, I've been trying other types of yoga but boy I'm struggling to even make it through the first couple of minutes with all the talk about using this time to become more compassionate and what not. I am NOT bashing anyone who enjoys this aspect of practice or believes in it. I'm actually really happy for you that you can do something like this and get so much joy and enrichment out of it. I'm even a bit jealous. But it seems to have the opposite effect on me.

I read that flexibility is just one component of yoga practice and that it's about much more than stretching and improving one's mobility. Does this mean I'm just too shallow for yoga and that I probably wouldn't enjoy any type? Are there any types of yoga that are less spiritual that you guys think might work for me? Would yin restorative cover everything I need or should I just stick with more traditional stretching routines?

Best exercises to go along with Yoga practise?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 12:14 PM PDT

I want to strengthen those parts of my body that I most "need" to hold various asanas. I struggle with stability and holding poses. I need to grow muscles in the arms, back and thighs.

    Any tips?

Teachers, how did you decide what type of yoga to teach?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 04:25 AM PDT

Or where to do your teacher training, I guess?

I've been wracking around the idea of teacher training for about 5 years. I'm currently doing a lot of vinyasa (my teachers learned from Rolf Gates) but my yoga started with Baptiste flow which resonates me more. I also love yin/restorative and would love to introduce that to people.

I know ultimately my classes would be whatever I made of them but I don't know where to start.

Boat pose and lower back fatigue

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 10:13 AM PDT

So I know with boat pose that you aren't supposed to dump into your back, and if you feel fatigue there and less in your core then you need to modify it to make it easier. The thing is, even when my lower back is straight, it still feels like I'm working out my lower back rather than my core, as my core doesn't really get that lactic acid pain. Does anyone know how to fix this or can tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Opening the hips following a life of too much testosterone indulgence

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 04:09 AM PDT

I recently got back into an ashtanga primary series practice after an ~8 year hiatus. As the title suggests, competitive youth wrestling, young adult CrossFit, current rock climbing habits, combined with sporadic drunken misadventures have left parts of me in better shape than others. I'm working on trying to open my hips- something very regular yoga 8 years ago helped tremendously with, but still left me a decent ways away from half-lotus bends and twists. Now, whenever I get into various hip openers (standing half lotus, seated half lotus, etc) I can usually get my feet close to where they should be on my opposite leg, but as I unwind the posture I feel a twinge in whatever knee was bent.
How worried about that should I be? It's usually not noticeable, or extremely faint, while entering and holding the pose, but I definitely feel that twinge as I leave and the leg straightens. If I should be worried (definitely don't want to blow out the knee!) what are some postures or sequences you can recommend for opening my hips up enough that knee pain is no longer an issue? I have never had a diagnosed knee injury before, they've just likely had a ton of impact over the years from sports and drunken misadventures.

Which 30 day yoga to choose?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 08:38 AM PDT

Tomorrow I am going to start a 30 day yoga session. But there are so many and I don't know which to pick. Can anyone recommend a good one?

I am practicing for 3 years now, so I am not a beginner but neither an experienced practitioner. Edit: I really like vinyasa flows :)

    Is yoga for me?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2020 07:31 AM PDT

Not trying to troll or anything. See i was Christian most my life, and a lot of them say that 'yoga is demonic' , or 'opens u up to bad stuff' etc... i mean, i don't necessarily believe that but anytime i do yoga those thoughts creep up. itwas drilled into my head.

Is yoga guaranteed to activate kundalini? I've heard of stories of it making people go to the hospital, going insane,etc... The thing is, i had done pyschedelics + meditation before and then it just brought me into pyschosis for months. On pyschedelics i had seen snakes, and even started talking like a snake to myself it was confusing to me. I could feel a snake move through my body sorta. Could that have been kundalini? ( but the pyschosis happened like 2-3 weeks after that )

I always am more cautious now. sometimes i feel better after yoga, but sometimes i don't. I dunno. Any input is welcome. I just dunno if i'd wanna go through a dark experience again
