I tried yoga in the dark for the first time and it's a completely different experience Posted: 15 Jun 2020 03:04 AM PDT I hadn't done yoga in almost a month. I was feeling really bummed out yesterday, so I grabbed my mat and went to my garden. No one could see me fooling around and tripping. I actually laughed at myself a few times. It was dark and quiet, and the wind felt so good against my skin. My senses were a bit heightened and I swear that some poses felt different under the stars. I left the mat feeling completely relaxed and comfortable with my current state of mind and place in life. I'll be doing this again, I'm even considering using a blindfold. If you haven't tried it, go on, dim the lights and enjoy! [link] [comments] |

Open discussion : Coming to terms and realizing that some poses just aren’t for you. Posted: 15 Jun 2020 04:36 AM PDT Hi all! Since I've been practicing more routinely this year, I've been trying to make sure I keep variety in my practices, even doing poses that don't feel the best for me. The biggest example of this is shoulder stand and plow pose. I use a platform/launch pad for both poses and I think that I'm being very mindful of my alignment, but no matter what, I always end up with lower back or neck pain! Due to this issue, I started to skip these poses. In my most recent practice (using an app) shoulder stand into plow pose came up and I decided to give them another shot... now I'm wishing I hadn't. My cervical spine is so tender and feels strained. When it comes to these poses, I'm going to make sure to check my ego and continue to pass on practicing them. There's no yogic gain from pain or injury. Please share your experiences if you've had any similar realizations! [link] [comments] |

Advice - Downward dog to feet between hands position Posted: 15 Jun 2020 06:12 PM PDT So this is during the Vinyasa flows where you go from downward dog to getting your feet between your hands. I jump however only able to do it half way (can't get fully to between the feet). Is this okay to keep doing this or should I be be stepping forward? [link] [comments] |

What kind of yoga for grounding and connection? Posted: 15 Jun 2020 05:20 PM PDT Hello everyone. I'm a long term meditator and I'd like to expand my spiritual practice with yoga. I'm not looking for yoga as exercise, Id prefer traditional spiritual practices, but I'm not opposed to demanding yoga though I'm not very flexible. Specifically for connecting with heart-mind, and for compassion through connectedness and re centering in my true aware nature. I'm a very analytic person and my energies tend to center around my head rather than the warmth of my heart. I'd like a warm a heart and cool head. Any suggestions? Thank you very much ☮️ [link] [comments] |
Is there a type of yoga that involves a lot of vocalizations? Posted: 15 Jun 2020 08:33 AM PDT Sometimes I feel like I just need to scream/make noise when I'm practicing. I've had teachers encourage us to "make raspberries" with our lips or sigh loudly which is cathartic to me. Is there a certain name for this type of thing? [link] [comments] |
My shoulders ache during downward dog Posted: 15 Jun 2020 11:23 AM PDT After the 3rd d dog in the flow my shoulders hurt during the breathing. What am I doing wrong? I'm still new and I've been following fightmaster yoga on YT. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Jun 2020 09:00 AM PDT Which program did you choose and why? I started the free trial for my Roku OnDemand but I'm thinking maybe the features are almost too limited? [link] [comments] |
Really struggling getting into yoga, any advice? Posted: 15 Jun 2020 02:47 PM PDT I've been trying to get into yoga for some time now but only properly started this week, and by that I mean been following the same video every day hoping that it will get easier as time goes on. But the thing is, I'm just really struggling and find it painful and not very relaxing. I'm really not flexible at all, I can't even touch my toes even though I'm only 21f. I've been following a hatha video and find most, if not all, the moves are really hard to do, even though it says it's for beginners and I just find it hard to relax as I'm just focusing on the pain and waiting for the moves to be over. I really want to get into yoga as I have quite bad anxiety and heard it's supposed to help with that but atm it's just been making me feel worse because I feel bad that I can't do it. I really want to get more flexibility and stronger aswell so I'm hoping over time this will help! So if you have any advice on what I should be doing please let me know as I'm struggling to get into it and really don't want to give up! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Why you don't need a strong core for handstands Posted: 14 Jun 2020 10:14 PM PDT Hey guys, So there is a myth that's going around, especially in yoga circles, that you need to do a lot of core exercises to do inversions like headstands and handstands. I can't tell you how many times I see misinformed comments on COMP posts that say "you need more core strength". While having good core strength is useful in many areas of your life, it's not particularly useful for handstands. First of all, core strength is activity-specific. What I mean by that is having good core strength in one pose does not necessarily transfer to good core strength in another pose. Doing planks will make your core stronger at doing planks (abs facing floor). Doing boat pose will make your core stronger at doing boat (abs facing ceiling). However, neither of these simulate the core engagement of a handstand (abs upside down, facing wall). You can do as many core exercises as you want, have six pack abs, and plank for an hour straight, but it's not going to transfer very much into handstands. That's because handstands don't require much core strength to begin with. To understand why, let's talk about gravity. Gravity is a downward force that pulls your body in a straight line towards the ground. When you are in a plank, your core must work to resist gravity because there's nothing but air under your core to support it. However, when you stand up straight on two feet, how much core strength are you using? Almost nothing right? That's because your core is stacked neatly over your legs which do all of the heavy lifting for you. A handstand works in the same way except instead of your legs supporting you, it's now your shoulders, wrists, and fingers. Those muscles are much smaller and therefore weaker than your legs so they have to work overtime to support everything on top (core, hips, and legs). If your base is not solid, everything above it is going to wobble and shake. So the key to handstands is not core strength, but rather shoulder, wrist, and finger strength. In fact, if your alignment is good, it's possible to have your core completely relaxed and not use it at all. That said, it takes a lot of practice to get to that point. As a beginner, your form is going to be less than perfect so in that case, it's actually helpful to keep your core engaged in order to help you find better alignment. But you don't need to engage it nearly as much as you think you do. 20-30% core engagement is generally all you need. So I wouldn't let a perceived lack of core strength hold you back from handstand training. You more than likely already have the required core strength to get started. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Jun 2020 07:38 AM PDT Hi, I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I don't know where else to post. Everytime I do any yoga pose such as runner's lunge where one knee is in contact with the mat, my knee hurts so much I have to get out of the pose and rest it. I find that this happens when I stay in tabletop position or plank on my knees as well. Does this get better with more practice? Does anyone know of any poses or stretches or something that can help with this? (or maybe a good quality thicker matt or equipment) A bit about me: I've only been doing yoga for about 2 weeks now and I do yoga on a matt on a marble floor (but it has happened with carpet underneath the mat as well) [link] [comments] |
Yoga teachers, what has your experience been teaching studio classes during Covid? Posted: 15 Jun 2020 01:17 PM PDT Currently the different studios I teach at don't seem to have a consensus on how to manage the new CDC guidelines. One studio is making us wear masks. But another studio is making us wear goggles. What has your experience been? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Jun 2020 09:27 AM PDT Hey all! New to the sub, and just read the FAQ page. I'm interested in trying Forrest Yoga, does anyone have an online / YouTube class they can recommend? I'm generally fit from non yoga activities so a 60 min class would be awesome! [link] [comments] |
