Help with crow pose requested. Posted: 03 Jun 2020 05:23 PM PDT Does anyone have any tips, pointers, or resources for nailing a sustained crow pose? As to where I'm at, I can handle a yogi squat just fine, and I don't have any issues with getting my arms into position. I'm fine right up until I have to actually lift my feet. After that, I can manage keeping my feet in the air with my legs propped on my triceps for a half-second at best. Any longer than that and my tricep skin feels like it's getting torn off from my knees sliding down my arms. How am I supposed to keep my legs propped on my arms? Do I need to be more considerate about keeping my weight shifted extra forward? If so, then how do I prevent myself from falling on my face? Has anyone else figured this out? Can I possibly ask for some ideas? Much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
new to Yoga - Deep breathing..sore muscles? Posted: 03 Jun 2020 08:24 PM PDT I recently realized I unintentionally hold my breath alot. I have began to try being more mindful of my breathing patterns and incorporating deep breathing. I have found that it's relaxed me also in a way I didn't expect. I feel as though I have a lot of tension in my muscles due to shallow breathing so when I started deep breathing I felt like I was being stretched from the inside, if that makes any sense. my body became a bit sore after. Like the intercostal muscles around my back ribs. It lasted a day and after that it didn't happen again after continuing deep breathing. This is strictly from deep breathing with good posture. Is this a typical side effect? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2020 08:10 PM PDT Sorry if this is long, but it's needed. I've been diagnosed with ptsd, anxiety, depression and had lower back pain since a car accident in 2017. Particularly recently I've been having a rough time, and I also have a tough time talking about some of the things I've been through. An old friend had introduced me to yoga shortly after the wreck so I had bought a mat around that time, but I only did a few sessions. Then the mat sat in my closet until 31 days ago. That's when I visited this sub. I read about everyone's positive experiences, and how yoga could really change your life physically and mentally. I decided why not, ill try and do a 30 day challenge on YouTube with Adriene. See how long I could last. A week in, I started to enjoy the time I had set aside along with the accomplishment of showing up and getting it done with the day. By day 14 I was seeing changes in my body and strengthening in muscles I had no idea I had. I was becoming less angry and finding more out about myself than I had in forever. I decided that I would continue to practice after I finished around day 21. Today was day 30, and mostly the point in this post that I want to drive home. Adriene starts off day 30 by saying we're going to be doing this practice without her, and she's there for a guide if needed. After about 3-4 minutes of doing the opening phases, without anyone guiding me I started doing most of the poses and transitions on autopilot. This realization that I could do it without her help came quickly. Then it hits me out of nowhere, my mind was free and clear. At that point I broke out with tears of joy. I had realized, doing this practice finally has brought me the confidence to be the best me who can be. Sweat and tears flooded the mat I consider to now be family. I don't have nightmares anymore. My back rarely ever hurts anymore. I smile randomly even in the darkest of times we're in. I'm happy. Thank you yoga. Thank you for reading if your still here. Don't ever give up hope, no matter how dark things can get it's never to late to change it to light. TL:DR Yoga changed my life [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2020 07:24 PM PDT Hi, I just discovered something called Core yoga. My son needs to do it as part of his therapy (he still has infant reflexes at 6) and I should probably do it too. Is there a dvd or book that goes over basic poses for this? I found a website that lists poses for it, but I can't have my phone on all the time and we are both visual learners. I saw the book/dvd suggestions in the sidebar, but what was wondering if the core yoga stuff is usually part of the basic stuff or if I need to get something tailored to just that. We do have Youtube, but we try to limit screen time for both my boys (2, 6) or they would watch Super Wings all day. Edit: after looking more thoroughly, I think I am overthinking this. So far he needs to work into plank (resting on arms only, not the feet part yet), superman (laying on the floor at first), and walking on the ceiling (with legs straight up), and being an egg that rolls back and forth (he can't roll back and forth yet). But if anyone has a favorite lite core yoga dvd suggestion I am definitely open to it for myself since my core is weak. (not a good thing when your a mom of two active boys). [link] [comments] |
Tingling sensation after starting butterfly stretches. Posted: 03 Jun 2020 07:15 PM PDT Hi Guys, I recently started doing butterfly stretches as a starting point towards eventually being able to sit in a full lotus position. I have never really taken stretching seriously in the past so am still new to the science of stretching. I have fairly tight hips, especially the right side (after having an ACL surgery about 3 years ago). After the first couple of days, I started feeling an ongoing tingling sensation on my the top and outer side of my right thigh. I have absolutely no issue son the left. This gets exacerbated if I say crossed legged and put my left foot under the right thigh. Some initial research said it could be the sciatic nerve playing up but I would love to know any thoughts on what might be going on here. Also, should I continue stretching? Would it make sense to wait a couple of days for this to subside and then continue? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Correct way of doing half boat? Posted: 03 Jun 2020 05:24 PM PDT Hello pretty people I started doing yoga again after 1 year of leaving it. I'm putting more effort to it (40 minutes on weekdays, 60 minutes on weekends) and I'm feeling great. I'm just having one problem, which is with the half boat pose. I have what you could say a "curvy" back and whenever I try to do this pose I don't manage to get my full back on the ground as I have seen on most images. This leads to a lot of lower back pain whenever I try to fulfil the pose. Is this normal? Or am I doing something wrong? Thank you in advance :) [link] [comments] |
Has anyone tried 30 days of yoga with Adrienne? What did you think? Posted: 03 Jun 2020 09:50 AM PDT I started 30 days of yoga with Adrienne today. Has anyone done this? What did you think of it? What kind of results did you get? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:14 AM PDT I'm on day 22 of Yoga with Adrienne. I feel really good and I'm really enjoying the daily sessions. I do have one issue that's been a perennial sore - My shoulders are just as locked up as they've always been. When I rotate them it feels like a cement grinder. All the down dogs/planks aren't helping the situation. After ever session my body from the chest down feels fine, but I have just as much tension in my shoulders/upper back. Are there any stretches/asanas or YT programs to help me with this issue? 31 year old male if that matters. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2020 05:12 PM PDT Hey reddit, I'm looking to begin a yoga class online and am looking for recommendations on a subscription service that allows me to upload video content and tutorials. I'm not sure what the best platform to use is (YouTube, Patreon, etc.)? For any one who has attempting this process or something similar, what did you find to be the most accessible for subscribers and easy to use? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Jun 2020 04:16 PM PDT I feel an unbearable sharp pinching sensation in the middle of my posterior thigh when I do any "hip opening" pose that targets my left side. Is this a sciatic nerve thing? It happens in any kind of pigeon, in bound angle pose (if I lean forward), fire log pose (agnistambhasana), cow face pose with left leg on top, etc. These stretches feel great when I am targeting my right side and I feel the stretch deep in my outer buttock/ piriformis area. I have tight hamstrings and therefore have a lot of difficulty with poses that require me to bend at the waist. Maybe this is part of the problem? Unfortunately, in the last two months or so I have been focusing on improving my hamstring flexibility and the pinching problem seems to be getting worse. It used to only really happen if I did "butterfly pose" which is what my instructor calls bound angle pose with your feet farther forward, away from your hips. Now I get it in all the poses I mentioned above: basically anything with my left leg bent and open and my torso leaning forward. Does anyone have ideas for how to move through this? Or why it seems to be worsening? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |

Moving supported headstand away from the wall Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:35 PM PDT I am looking for some techniques to help move my supported headstand away from the wall. I've been practicing it for many months and feel very stable in it. When I'm at the wall, I don't even use it! I tried moving away from the wall a couple months ago but then one time I fell forward. I didn't get hurt at all but it scared me. After that, I went back to the wall and worked on approaching my headstand differently (before I was tucking my legs and then lifting, now I lift one leg straight and bring the other to meet it). Like I said, I'm pretty stable in headstand but I think I have a mental block when I try to do it away from the wall. Does anyone have any tips for this? I think I would feel better if I knew I could fall safely. Falling forward is what scares me. I fell safely before but it was abrupt and felt more like I was lucky to be safe! I have tried to find information about falling safely but most suggest trying to fall backwards, which isn't what I fear. Does anyone know any good ways to practice falling forward? Thanks! Why the Halfway Lift in a sequence? Posted: 03 Jun 2020 05:16 AM PDT I was doing my yoga last night - nothing fancy, and just going through the 'Forward Fold, Halfway Lift, Back down to Forward Fold, come back to mountain' bit that's in so many routines. Something I've done for years and years, and heard from multiple teachers. And I never gave it much thought before but... What's the point of the halfway lift part where you come from forward fold, part way up, and then go back down before coming all the way up? Is it to keep you from getting dizzy after coming up? wobbling moving from low lunge to high lunge/drop knee lunge Posted: 03 Jun 2020 10:14 AM PDT is there anything other than practice to help this? in general, i see to have really good balance with standing postures/the inversions i've worked on, but it seems like without fail i always have A LOT of wobbliness going from low to high lunge OR from low lunge to the dropped knee lunge... i feel like maybe my back leg is too far back? but i'm not sure exactly how far back it should be/how "spread out" i should be in high lunge [link] [comments] |

Yoga studios post Covid-19 - what has changed? Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:53 AM PDT Hi all! I'm curious to find out if your yoga studio has opened and if so, what has changed? Are there considerably less people? Are there more classes to fit the demand due to smaller class sizes? Extra cleaning? Etc. etc. Yoga studios are not allowed to be open where I live. I'm not even sure when they'll be open. I'm just trying to prepare myself for when yoga studios get the green light to open. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:10 AM PDT Hello! My goal is to be able to do a puppy pose like this. But I'm having difficulties touching my chest on the ground. I can touch though if my thighs aren't perpendicular to the ground. I can't seem to push myself further down. What should I do to reach my goals? [link] [comments] |
