Still feel weak after doing yoga every day for about 2,5 years. Other experiences? Tips?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 01:32 PM PDT

Hello all! About 2,5 years ago I started doing yoga every single day for minimum 25min and about 50min maximum. I almost always follow YouTube videos while doing yoga (Yoga With Adriene).

Now, I definitely have gotten more flexible and yoga has many other positive effects on me. The only thing I am wondering about it: I feel like yoga still is pretty hard, sure it depends from day to day as well. But lately I get annoyed because I feel like a lot of these exercises still feel equally hard as they did when I started yoga. Sometimes it makes me feel weak and I wonder if this is normal? I feel like I don't make a lot of progress strength wise. For example, holding plank, doing push ups, vinyasa (plank -> cobra -> downward facing dog), high lunges still feel really hard. I can't even do upward facing dog yet in my vinyasas.

Now, I know that I mostly have high expectations and can be hard on myself but I still feel like I should be able to hold these poses with more ease than I am at the moment. I just wonder if this is normal after doing yoga for 2,5 years and if I just need to have more patience?

I would love to hear other yogis their experience and tips if any. Thanks in advance 🙏

What is something you got for yoga that you now couldn't live without or really love it?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 03:15 PM PDT

My friends birthday is next month so I'm doing a little shopping. We are all into yoga and she's probably the more advanced one in the group. We do yoga at home over zoom chat and at a local studio. I want to get her something that she would love and use! She has the basics but i want something unique <3 This can be something you use daily, something you enjoy setting an atmosphere ect.. Also figured others would enjoy this as well!

Current idea: Been thinking a yoga blanket because we have been doing yoga in our local park so we could avoid bugs on our mats lol.

Any pose or flow recommendations for dealing with anger or frustration?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 08:37 AM PDT

I go through waves in my life where I am over-the-moon full of joy and love and appreciation for life. But then I always fall flat on my face and feel a lot of anger and frustration. Like I want to control everything, nothing is the way I want it to be.

Yoga gives me something constructive to focus on, but I feel that I'm falling into another pit now and I've hit a point in which I want to try something a little new, even if it is small. Do any of you have a go-to when you are feeling this way? Something I could incorporate into my daily practice until I regain my emotional balance?

My yoga knowledge is fairly basic, btw. I've been trying to master Crow Pose but can't hold for more than a few seconds for now. If that is any indicator of my level.

    Thanks in advance!

Safe poses for older guy with previous injuries

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 03:23 PM PDT

Hi guys! Let me start by saying I did go over the FAQ and checked the linked injuries. My issue isn't covered but I thought I would try my luck anyway.

My dad is 66 year old a dialysis patient who does night dialysis 3 times a week where he has to lay in a bed mostly on the same side / sometimes flat on his back for brief periods. For some years now, this has caused him hip pain / stiff hips. He usually goes to physio which helps some but due to COVID he hasn't been able to go and his pain's been getting a lot worse. Most of the physio he usually does requires either the work out equipment they have there or the assistance of the therapist. He was on the phone with the physical therapist today and while they were trying to figure out exercises he could do he mentioned to her that I had greatly improved my back and shoulder flexibility doing yoga and he sometimes wishes he could join in. She basically told him that's perfect and to go ahead and try, just stop if anything feels painful.

Now I'd be happy to do yoga together with my pops but I'm a little stomped. I started yoga about one and a half years ago as a way to counteract gaming+a desk job and I'm using videos on YT for beginners mostly so I'm not exactly an expert. On top of this, my dad has several issues that make creating a routine or following a video very tricky imho. These are as follows:

-From decades of dialysis his bone density is terrible and he had a bad fall some years ago that broke his collarbone. This has never properly healed and the right side of his collarbone is essentially only connected by a hair thin line of bone so he cannot put any weight/strain on there at all
-He had a stroke some 30 years ago that left him partially paralyzed on the right side (leg and arm/hand). In terms of the foot/leg he can put weight on it but has bad / slightly jerky control and almost no feeling. His hand works fine for "rough" jobs (meaning things that don't require fine motor work) and he has decent grip strength but he can only either grip at full strength or fully release the hand
-To allow for dialysis, he has a shunt just below the elbow on the right side. There should be no excess weight or pressure put on this

Keeping all the above in mind, is it actually feasible for my dad and I to figure out a simple flow together that he could do to improve his hips? Something in the range of 10 - 20 minutes would be ideal and I'd be happy to purchase any blocks / resistance bands / special mats, etc. required if that helps.

    I would greatly appreciate input.

    Cheers!

Has practicing yoga poses lead you to any spiritual experiences?

I can't do lunges or chair pose for more than 3-5 seconds. Any advice?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 08:40 AM PDT

I have been getting more into yoga lately and practicing once or twice a day. I have noticed over the last month that my quads BURN when I do anything involving them. Like, I will get into any formation of a lunge (crescent, runners, etc) and I have to immediately get out of the position because my quads are on fire. I would say I can only last like 3-4 seconds in a lunge before I get this intense burning pain in one of my quads, or like 5 seconds in chair pose.

I'm not sure if this is just a case of extreme muscle weakness, or if there is something else going on. I use to weight train a few years ago before I got a back injury and I don't remember my quads feeling this way when I did my workouts.

For reference, I do have osteoarthritis in my SI joints (and likely elsewhere, but they only scanned my SI joints for something else). I am 24 but my genes ain't great.

Anyone have tips, advice? Is this a symptom of something bigger, is it arthritic, or am I just weak and need to workout more? Is this common?

Are there any pro-BIPOC, pro-LGBTQIA+ yoga brands out there?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 06:38 PM PDT

I am finding that a lot of brands are being silent on all things BIPOC or queer. I want to get more involved in the yogi community; however, I'm feeling it is very cishet and white, and am struggling to find a brand that is all-inclusive and openly involved with the BLM movement. I may be cis and white, but I still don't feel okay supporting a brand that doesn't prove to be inclusive. So, if anyone could lead me to a brand that is, I'd be very grateful. Bonus points if the brand provides donations to the queer or BIPOC community. Thank you to everyone who helps me out! I just want a new mat..

Reluctantly taking a break from Yoga

    Posted: 17 Jun 2020 09:06 PM PDT

Sadly, I'm going through a complicated pregnancy loss and my doctors have told me to do two seemingly impossible things over the next MONTH: not eat anything with folic acid in it (which is most veggies and fruits), and to stop exercising. I asked if Yoga was fine, but they said no cause even stretching might lead to a rupture.

It's been two weeks of this and I've already gained 4lbs with the change in diet, I feel very depressed, and my calves, hamstrings, and neck have been killing me from not stretching. I've been doing some arm exercises cause I can't help myself, but am feeling more like a blob with each day.

Has anyone had to take a break from Yoga before. How did you cope, or did you find other ways to stay fit? As a daily yogi for the past 6 years, I'm having a very hard time without yoga and need some friendly advice and support from fellow Yogis... Thanks in advance.

I got “yoga butt.” How do I heal it?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2020 08:49 AM PDT

So I discovered I got "yoga butt" from over stretching my hamstrings. I do a lot of leg stretches like forward bends because I'm planning to do splits (I'm bored in quarantine lol). I can do my left front split already but now I almost can't do it again because my butt hurts. Have anybody experienced yoga butt before? How did you heal it? Did you stop yoga completely? Will this video help? (link below) I really don't wanna stop stretching because I can already do the splits and I'm afraid I'll lose it again if I stop.
