After a terrible night of sleep I didn't feel motivated to do anything, let alone doing my (almost) daily yoga practice. But then I decided I'd probably feel better after doing yoga, so I just did it. 90 minutes intermediate practice.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 02:56 AM PDT

I feel so proud and so much better than before. I can still feel the bad sleep but I did a flexibility focus, so my body just feels so stretched and activated. It was my third or fourth intermediate practice on Down Dog and I still struggle with some (or truth be told, a lot) of the asanas but I tried everything and did as much as I could. And oh boy, 90 minutes! I've never done more than 50-60 minutes before!

If I don't feel like doing yoga or anything, actually, I can focus on what it feels like having it accomplished and I can probably make it work. I'm so happy to share my accomplishment of today with this lovely community!

Request from a social worker who knows nothing about yoga!

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 02:47 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm a social worker working in a nonprofit agency, one component of which is a women's residence. We've been given some funding to purchase some yoga and exercise-related supplies/equipment - as I'm sure you can imagine, COVID-19 has the women stuck inside the residence with little to do. I can figure out equipment based on my budget, but I was wondering if this community had any suggestions in terms of instructional yoga DVDs that are inclusive and would be appropriate for women of varying ages, body types, and abilities. I started to do a search but quickly became overwhelmed by the amount of content there is out there, so I thought I'd come to the experts! I know that there is a lot of online content (e.g. YouTube) as well, and I'd appreciate suggestions for online content as well (we aren't really set up to be able to stream content on a TV via a computer at the moment, but I'm working on it).

Thanks in advance for your help + support :)

    Yoga hallucinations

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 08:27 PM PDT

Yesterday I was doing Yoga with my wife after work (I barely started practicing it 2 weeks ago) and by the time we were finishing our yoga session during the relaxation part I felt so light and started seeing a lot of lights in a room and heard a lot of Kongs and found myself laying in the floor.

Have anybody experienced something like that?

I do smoke weed but never done it before or while doing yoga.

    Rolling up from the neck

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 07:42 PM PDT

I've been practicing yoga for a handful of years now. I wouldn't call myself anything more than a learner, but I feel I understand most of the reasons why transitions or practices follow certain movements. For example, why you engage your core, why you keep a straight spine, etc.

Today I was practicing from a video instruction and they said to tuck the chin and roll up from the neck. I've heard this plenty if times, but I've never really thought about tlit until now. I'm sure there's a reason but does anyone know what the importance of this is? Is it again to keep the spine straight? Or are there other reasons/benefits to following this? Thanks in advance!

    New discomfort for child’s pose

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 07:39 PM PDT

Hello, I have only really done yoga on and off but I am trying to work on my posture and was trying to do some practice to help. Today I was just trying to get into child's pose and for the first time in my life it was really uncomfortable... like a tight band across the bottom of my rib cage (and no, my clothes weren't too tight!). I was trying to look up adjustments for this and I didn't see it mentioned anywhere. Any idea what this is and what I can do?

Any fun cool new body changes you guys notice over time?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 09:00 AM PDT

So, I just started doing yoga every day with a YWA series, and suddenly I can do 2 pushups in a row. This is a huge victory for me, as even when I was strength training regularly I could NOT get a single pushup out — I'd collapse at the bottom of it.

Do you guys have any awesome similar victories you've noticed :)

Email from Yoga Int'l re: the fight against white supremacy & systemic racism...

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 11:32 AM PDT

INCLUDES LINKS TO RESOURCES & ORGANIZATIONS

A message from Yoga International (yogainternational.com):

We stand with the Black community and activists fighting against white supremacy and systemic racism. We stand with those rightfully seeking justice on behalf of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless others murdered by the police. We stand by the message Black Lives Matter.

We are committed to listening, learning, using our platform to amplify Black voices, and using our resources to support anti-racist activists and organizations. Though our practice can be a powerful tool to empower and inspire us, handstands and warrior poses aren't going to change the world. As teacher and activist Michelle Johnson reminds us, yoga is so much more: Yoga is skill in action. Yoga is also about self-reflection. It's about seeing, and acknowledging the work that we have to do, and then going out and doing that work.

As a company, and as a community, we have taken the following steps this week. As members of our community, we hope that you will join us in whatever ways you are able to. We also understand that this is just the beginning.

    • We have donated to the Minnesota Freedom Fund, the NAACP, and the George Floyd Memorial Fund.

    • Our editorial, production, and design teams are focusing on amplifying the work and voices of Black yoga teachers on our platform.

    • We have committed to regularly and consistently using our social media platforms to highlight the work of Black yoga teachers.

    • We are attending and supporting local events and peaceful protests in our area.

    • We are also paying closer attention to the internal structure of our company, looking for ways to actively make our Yoga International a truly anti-racist environment and further prioritize diversity and inclusion in our hiring practices.

We know we have more work to do. We are listening. We welcome your feedback.

A 2 hour long video call with 40 other people drained my energy.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 03:55 AM PDT

Not sure if this is the right sub for this. But here's what happened today. After almost 2 months of minimal interaction with people or venturing outside, I had a video call with my class regarding important stuff. It was 2 hours long and felt so redundant.

Post that call, although it was early in the morning and I hadn't done much work today, I felt so drained. Like I didn't feel like doing anything. I was constantly distracted and couldn't read or write or watch anything. Tried to do some yoga, but that didn't help either.

My main issue is that soon we're going to resume our normal life and I can't let human interactions drain me this much. Is there anything I can do about it? All kinds of suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance!

Downward dog -> lunge transition troubleshoot help

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 11:06 AM PDT

    Hello r/yoga

As the title says, I can't step up from downdog into lunge in one move at all. Once I do "knee to nose" and try to step it up my foot just falls where it was during knee to nose (so probably 1.5 foot away from my hands) and I have to push it forward with my hand. (Goes for both sides)

This is something that has been in the back of my mind for quite some time now and I hope you can help me look at the situation differently or help with advice on how to improve it.

A bit about myself: I've started a regular asana practice at home in December, and have been doing yoga daily with Yoga with Adriene on yt for the last 154 days, currently doing the only 30 days challenge left over "Revolution". That's something I do in the evenings + pranayama and meditation practice. In the mornings I do a few sun salutations mostly (2-10, whatever feels good) + pranayama and meditation practice.

To note is that I started out morbidly obese, now I'm 10 lbs away from being classified as overweight. So this all night be due to my weight.

So far I've been thinking that it's just my belly being in the way (but most of my belly is gone on comparison to how it was) or maybe I'm too weak or not flexible enough or all of it at once, as this situation hasn't improved in the last 5 months imo.

So how can I improve? What am I lacking for this transition?

I started out as not even being able to touch my shins in a forward fold to easily touching my toes with legs straight, but I can't put my hands flat near my feet with legs straight if it matters.

Nowadays I can hold a plank for a minute relatively easily. And I can do a full push up, but not more than one tbh, at least not with a proper form.

I believe my lower abs are weak as I have trouble getting my bum off the ground for the shoulderstand. Would my lower abs be the problem?

Maybe I just suck at engaging my uddiyana bandha during this and my breathing is off? How to know?

I'd love to hear your ideas on how to improve. But if you guys think I should just trust the process and the transition will come in due time and that it's normal in the first year of daily practice to not being able to do the transition, I'll find that helpful too.

Feeling a bit...stuck and it just seems like "everyone" can do the transition naturally from or learns it relatively quickly.

    TL; DR

I can't go from downward dog to lunge in one move. What do?

Sharp pain during transition from cobra to down dog in lower back.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:58 PM PDT

    Hi folks,

I'm just wondering if anyone else has the same issue? This is the only time I get this pain and it's during the transition above. It's an a cute pain across my lower back and hips. I'm just curious if anyone has experienced this and any suggestions to relieve it. Thanks.

deep breathing when it's polluted ?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 04:07 PM PDT

not sure where else to post this, but i notice my breathing is really shallow a lot because the air around me isn't clean, inside/outside.

incense, essential oils, even cologne help a lot but not for long. i'd love plants but i should be moving soon.

i definitely feel a lot better and less stressed when i am able to take deep breaths.

not sure if there's any tips here? or maybe i'm just complaining

if there are any suggestions, i'll say money is tight.

When I do things like triangle pose, my knee feels like it's going to snap/break?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:55 PM PDT

Hi all! I've been practicing yoga on-and-off for a number of years, and one issue I've always had is that when I do standing positions like the triangle pose, the knee of my extended leg (leg with straight foot) feels like it's going to break in half if I straighten my leg. I make sure that I'm distributing my weight, and I've stopped placing my hand on my ankle/leg, rather, I'll put it on the floor or use a block. But it still happens! My knee feels like it's going to invert itself, and when I come out of poses where the leg has to be straightened, my knee is always sore.

Should I be getting my knees looked at? or are they just insanely weak for some reason? Any knee strengthing exercises I could do?

Buying a used jade yoga mat?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2020 12:08 PM PDT

Amazon warehouse has some like new harmony mats for 30$. If I clean it thoroughly would it be worth it? Half the time these products are just returns and barely used. But I can see how gross it is. I was thinking of getting proper yoga mat cleaner.
