Feeling discouraged about reversal in my yoga progress

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 04:25 PM PDT

Hi yogis. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on working through discouragement on their personal yoga journey? I've been practicing yoga off and on for about 10 years, but began practicing daily (give or take 2-3 rest days) at the start of quarantine back in March. Around mid-May I really started to notice my own strength, flexibility, balance, and overall mindfulness really began to alter and improve and I was so proud of myself.

For the past 2ish weeks, I feel like my body started making a complete revert backwards. I'm not reaching my forward bends as well, my balance has been a mess, my upper body strength has notably weakened, and in light of all this, Ive become frustrated.

Has anyone else experienced this? How did you get through this? The complete overnight difference in my progress has really discouraged me and just want to know how I get to where I was a month ago.

    Tantra

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 07:27 PM PDT

I have a sincere desire to understand tantra the best I can, but I understand it to be a rather diverse, complex, and (apparently) secretive subject. I'm not interested in Buddhist tantra necessarily, but tantra of the Hindu sort - with a focus on worldview (i.e. the physical as divine) as opposed to sexuality. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Is your yoga practice "Follow Along" or self-guided?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 12:33 PM PDT

Hi folks! I've been doing yoga for some time now and while I deeply value my practice, I primarily "follow-along" with a YouTube video rather than following a traditional sequence or creating a self-guided practice. Lately this has been feeling like a limitation/plateau but I'm stumped as to where to go from here...so I thought of r/yoga!

My discussion prompt, should you choose to engage, is:

    • Would you categorize yourself as a "Follow-along", "Traditional Sequence" or "Self-Guided" Yogi? Something else entirely? All of the above? (For the purposes of discussion, I think it makes sense to assume yogis will make alterations as needed/desired within each "type")
    • Those of you who have a self-guided practice: I'd love to pick your brain! How did you start? What do you do? Do you prepare before practice or is it ad-hoc? Is your practice the same/similar every time or is it constantly changing (more than simple alterations/adjustments)?
    • What has worked (or not worked!) for you in the past when you feel stuck, or you've hit a plateau? Did you change your perspective, change your circumstances, changed your approach? What made you re-engage with your yoga practice?

Looking forward to chatting with y'all!

    Advice Please: Staying Consistent

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 05:32 PM PDT

I always feel so amazing after my practice. I will go steady and strong every day or so for several weeks and then I will drop doing practice all together. Any results I see quickly go away and I have to start all over again. I would love to have tips and advice on what you do to stay motivated to make sure that you practice on a consistent basis.

I will be 50 in a few years. My reasons for doing yoga are long-term, in that I want to have a strong body when I am a senior. It is very important to me that I establish a routine and begin to see positive results in my body and what it can do. Work and my teenagers are the things that tend to make me stumble on staying consistent.

Thank you so much for any advice you may have.

    Knee/wrist pain

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 08:00 PM PDT

Hello, I have recently started doing yoga as a way to keep healthy (mentally and physically) during lockdown. I am doing Adriene's 30 days, but even just day 1 has me struggling.

I come from a weightlifting background and have very poor flexibility, especially in my wrists (having my palm on the ground over my shoulder is painful, I usually do push-ups with my fist down).

My knees are also in a lot of pain when I am doing tabletop or even child's pose.

I'm wondering if my body will get used to this, or if I am doing something incorrectly

The Spiritual Aspect of Yoga (Missing or kept subtle on purpose?)

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 06:29 AM PDT

As the title infers, I'm just curious about your guys' thoughts/feelings on this topic in general. I understand yoga is a great way to connect with one's body and self on a deeper and more subtle level, but the main appeal for me is it's a path to self-realization through the combination of one's sincere practice along with deep meditation. I'm relatively new to the journey and developing a steady practice, but it seems to me that in the West it's really only about the physicality of the practice, not the spiritual, more subtle aspects of it. So my question really is, are those of us here that are practicing yoga inherently aware and working towards self-realization, but don't openly discuss it to not be labeled as some woo-woo practitioners, or is the aspect of spirituality/self-realization mostly taken out of the equation in this part of the world? Namaste.

Has anyone managed to correct their anterior pelvic tilt and hunchback posture with yoga?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 11:29 AM PDT

I kind of impulse bought a yoga mat because I saw some exercises on YouTube pertaining to these posture issues, but I was just wondering if anyone has successfully managed to correct their posture from these underlying issues with yoga.

    Vinyasa flow videos with voice-over

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 01:13 PM PDT

Hello community. I'm a new yoga enthusiast who's trying to add some variety to her practice. I've been working out with Sarah Beth yoga for more than a month now and I really appreciate her clear and loud instructions. Recently I've been trying to change things up and I'm trying to find any other instructors that use the same clear and detailed way of explaining things, preferably in voice-over. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you in advance!

    Story time

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 12:33 PM PDT

Just for fun because I was reminded by this on another page I am on what are your funny Yoga class stories? I have tons of as a student of embarrassing myself or watching other people do the same, and I have a few stories as a teacher. As a student I will start with my very first yoga class ever in this outdoor temple in Gainesville Florida. It was super hot and muggy and the teacher was crazy, she probably wasn't I just felt really angry at her because she kept making us keep our arms lifted and I got super dizzy and had to run out of there after screaming I'm going to throw up, because it was do that or fall out on the floor in a fainting spell. Then another time I was with my hubby and I had just gotten into practicing a lot and was of course showing off. This sadly is the ONLY class I have taken with my husband. I was doing fall backs and totally missed the ground and cracked my head. Loudly. I was laying on the ground and the teacher and my hubby came running over to me. I was speechless, which made it worse, they kept asking me if I was okay and I wanted to sink into the ground and disappear. Then as a teacher- my most embarrassing moment was telling the students to lift their scrotums, I meant sacrum. Trust me there are so many more after 20 years practice. What are yours?

    Yoga breathing exercises

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 10:24 AM PDT

New here so Hi! And apologies for any faux pas. I got into yoga before the lockdown so I've been practicing mostly from TV and YouTube. I'm never sure how I should be controlling my breathing and they rarely go into it during the sessions. Can anyone recommend any good resources or advice please?

Is there a yoga teacher quiz app?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 06:54 AM PDT

Hello Yogis! I am currently doing YTT and was wondering if there is a good quiz app that helps review the material. It would be so helpful for learning the formal names of poses, proper alignment, remembering the psychological terms, anatomy, and everything else.

If there isn't one I may just make one, I'm hoping I won't have to go through the trouble!

How do I get my motivation back?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2020 12:13 PM PDT

I'm relatively new to yoga. I was practicing asana and meditation almost everyday for about 2 months, but I've lost motivation to keep going even though I think about yoga every day, and I want to practice. It's been around 2-3 weeks since i last got on my mat.

Do any other yogis out there have tips for what they do to get back into it again during moments like this? I appreciate it❤️
