I realised during a meditation session that a lot of my anxiety comes from rushing through things

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 11:57 AM PDT

I had a sort of epiphany last week while meditating. It came to me that the source of most of my anxiety comes from constantly rushing through things to get to the next thing. Even if I've nothing else to do I still am frantic about whatever I'm doing. From walking, work, scrolling through my phone etc. And since this realisation I've been trying to slow myself down to a near snail's pace at everything. And I've found my anxiety has gone way down! I've also become super mindful as I'm actually taking in what I'm doing in that moment. I'd definitely recommend trying this out if anyone thinks they've felt similar.

"When you are meditating, stop worrying about what's coming next, the thing in front of you even if it's sloth and torpor or tiredness or restlessness, please don't demean it.It's important why? because it's here,it's going to teach you something.Don't try and get rid of it,care for it." - Ajahn Brahm

Is it normal to feel anxiety and like your not getting enough air when focusing on the breath?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 12:46 PM PDT

I have been trying to learn how to breath from the diaphragm for a while now and often times when I attempt to I feel like I'm not getting enough air. Then I end up having to raise my shoulders to feel like I got a satisfying breath. I know raising the shoulders to breath is actually a shallow breath so I don't understand why I feel like I need to breath this way. Is this a common experience for beginners?

I finally got it. Meditation clicked for me today.

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 07:15 AM PDT

I made a goal to start meditating daily. I have a spreadsheet where I record the minutes of each daily session, how I felt before it, and then how I felt after.

Today was day 5, and it finally clicked for me. After years of doing it on and off and feeling like I was just sitting there, I get how I'm supposed to do it now. I just tried it with no expectations other than to do what headspace taught me months ago (lol) and this is what seems to be my brains way of going through it:

1: my mind races and I sit there getting distracted

2: I eventually calm it all down and I can feel myself slipping into the "quiet zone"

3: I get more focused and everything is quiet. I feel floaty and now I can actually focus on ONE thing, or I can just sit there and be calm if I want.

4: remind myself how I felt before meditating, then think a mantra to get myself feeling calmer/better

5: end it on a good note once I actually DO feel better

Meditation makes sense now. I used to give up because it took me forever to get to step 3. Now I know that it's okay if it takes me awhile. I'll hit that eventually. With more practice, I can start to think about WHY I felt anxious/stressed out before meditating, and I can think about how to better myself in the calm state I'm in.

I don't know if this is really advice, but I'm really proud of myself for finally understanding it the way my brain can and I'm just sharing.

EDIT: formatting bc I'm on mobile. Sorry if it looks messy.

    Eager to learn more

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 08:16 PM PDT

I meditated last night with black tourmaline crystal and a guided meditation tape "clearing negative blockages" as I was getting into it maybe the first 3 or 5 mins my heart was fluttering very fast. So I focused on my breathing and the meditation tape. Soon I was very relaxed and in the zone. I went into a trance about 3 times and I could feel so much energy running through my body but I kept giving myself a fright because each time i realized i was in a trance. After a while I began to come out of my meditation and my breathing was clearer and I was lighter. I realized I was in meditation for and hour and 20 mins... how do I know I'm not falling asleep or just in my zone. How often do I need to meditate before I get to the third eye stage? I'm a beginner and have a lot to learn still. And there is still so much that I dont know.

    Ways to eliminate worries

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 08:05 PM PDT

Any form of mental tension has an adverse effect on our physical and mental health. The more the agitation inside, the less we think, perceive, and act. So, let's look at some ways to deal with this disruptive state.

Beyond the words, lives love:Words are powerful but not as much as love. When not required, it is better to be silent than talk unnecessarily. Our consciousness is stress-free when there is less noise in our minds, however, this tenuous condition is lost with excessive talking. When we communicate in silence, we communicate with our hearts, we communicate with love. Worry becomes zero.

Pranayama and Meditation:Practice this ancient yogic art. Bhastrika Pranayama helps get rid of worries. Meditation has rich benefits for settling our calm and assembling our thoughts. Now that I practice it regularly, I know how Heartfulness meditation so capably takes care of my physical and mental well-being.

Make someone listen to you:Be it a family member or a trusted friend, share what is bothering you so much and get a better understanding of your dilemma. Expressing your vulnerability may lead you to mental peace, after all, a problem shared is a problem halved.

Write a journal:If nothing from the above works for you and you still feel isolated, take a diary and write your worries, emotions, sentiments, and inner thoughts. We may not express ourselves openly in front of others but with writing, expressing becomes very easy. Collect all your worries and thoughts, and take time out each day to vent through words.

Worry can become a chronic problem if allowed to go unchecked. While we cannot eliminate it completely, we can reduce its effect to a great extent. Remember, worrying doesn't do anything to us – it only adds toxins to our system. Life goes on regardless . . . so, why worry?

    Suggestion Wanted: Guided Choices?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 02:08 AM PDT

Hoping some of you all might have a suggestion for me!
I use meditation primarily to fall asleep. When I first started, just about any new guided exercise I could find on YouTube worked because it was all new to me, but I'm starting to not be able to focus because a lot of them feel the same. A body scan or similar scenes where I just notice a pretty setting.

I really became a fan of Jason Stephenson's Vortex Meditation ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4oUx-y04LQ&t=810s ) and I think it is because I found it relistenable. There was a choice to make (which vortex are you heading to?). Each option corresponded with different feelings and allowed me to imagine different locations and colors or sit in different emotions each time I listen.

Does anyone know of any other guided imagery exercises that allow for more imagination and options?

Example: Description of 3 paths, you choose which one. The narration continues vaguely enough that it does not matter if different listeners make different choices and imagine different things. Then maybe another option: A choice of an object to interact with or whatever.

I just need something that requires my mind to be a bit more active. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!! :)

    Seeing while meditating?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 10:09 PM PDT

I've been meditating on and off for about 4-5 years- within the last year meditation has become a normal thing for me and within the last 3 months it has become part of my daily routine.

I'm trying to lean more into my spiritual side of things. I tend to be a skeptic and put everything through a logical filter, but I've been trying my hardest to set that aside in hopes that I'll be able to become more in tune with myself and generally more insightful with my own issues through spirituality... if that makes any sense.

Anyway, while I was meditating I set aside a brief intent of finding a spirit guide. It wasn't entirely my main focus, but something that was just there as I was de-cluttering my mind. As I was trying to focus on a certain problem, something that has never happened to me occurred.

This might sound stupid- but essentially I saw a very vivid lizard. At first, it was just the eye, but then it slowly sort of came as a detailed leopard gecko with some blue hues to it. This was INCREDIBLY vivid, legit just sitting in the void of my head. I don't and I have never owned a leopard gecko so it was sorta weird.

Anyway, again this might sound stupid, but it told me to "trust in time", which is something that kinda is a theme of my issues. At this point I was so distracted by the fact that I was deadass seeing a lizard speak to me that I lost my concentration.

This might just be something I'm totally over-analyzing and merely a case of me just entering more of a dream-like state from relaxation/being tired and seeing something like that, but another part of me wants to believe that it might actually mean or be something.

My question really is if this is normal for others to experience or if I'm looking into things too much to sort of fill in the gaps. Can anyone explain what just happened?? And I apologize for the wall of text.

TLDR: saw a very vivid vision of a leopard gecko telling me to "trust in time" while meditating

    How to do Meditation?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2020 01:30 AM PDT

Hi, friends, I am Vikram, In this article, I want to talk about gazing meditation. First of all, I want to state that I am NOT a meditation expert and I have no formal education in meditation. I am a normal person who learns and practices meditation every day. I love reading books and articles about meditation and sharing what I have learned in those books and videos. Gazing meditation, also known as Trataka meditation.

I’m becoming aware of just how angry I am.

Meditation has helped with my mood overall, but the more I meditate the more I realize just how angry I am. It's not going to make me stop meditating, but it is a little demoralizing.

Has anyone here overcome severe motivational, perseverence, and discipline issues in their practice?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 07:16 PM PDT

I've started and dropped practicing meditation many times over the decades of my life, and generally have problems motivating myself for persistent, long-term effort in many areas of my life, not just meditation. I'm more of a sprinter than a marathon runner.

Has anyone here seriously struggled with similar issues in their practice and overcome them to finally achieve a stable, consistent, long-term practice?

If so, I'd love to hear how you did it.

    Musicians of r/Meditation!! Let's talk :)

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 01:23 PM PDT

Music has been very important to me from a young age, and meditation has deeply affected my approach. I dont know any other musicians who meditate, so I'd love to hear your responses to the following questions:

Have you found your approach to the practice and creation of music altered in any way as you've further explored meditation? Has your perception of music as a listener changed as well? How so?

Are there any specific qualities of meditation that you find to be especially beneficial for you as a musician?

Speaking personally, mantra meditation has helped me get better at practicing. A battle with laziness has plagued me since birth, so warm-ups and more rudimentary practices regarding technique would always render me disinterested after only a couple minutes. Repeating a mantra over and over showed me the beauty and calm in repetition, and so I can now play an exercise over and over again and see that action as a form of sadhana in itself.

On a more spiritual level, meditation showed me the oneness in all things, and that all I despise and admire is but a reflection of the self. I always have struggled with a self-hate which made writing music difficult. Being able to feel the planets and the stars moving through my fingers as I write has changed my entire outlook on the process, and has filled me with more of a love for creating than a desire to make something brilliant. Similarly, it's easier to appreciate the music made by somebody else as it is, a great and inspiring piece of music, rather than a standard I'll never live up to.

I look forward to your responses! :P

we have access to bliss at all times

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 08:15 PM PDT

my meditation last night taught me that i have access to bliss at all times. when i'm going through the small everyday stresses now, i quickly realize a lot of them simply arise from thoughts. and that's all they are—i don't have to act off of them. just watch them arise, feel them, and allow them to pass. it feels liberating.

I like to do this thing I call "drifting"

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 11:30 PM PDT

where I close my eyes and rest until I'm in a partly-waking, and partly in sleep-mode. Keep myself in the sweet spot of "drifting" off to sleep, where you start having all the random pre-dreams; visuals and sounds and scenes, etc..., while staying aware of it.

I'm going to experiment with it more, but the other day, I had some WILD drift dreams that permanently affected my perspective of time. I made a little podcast video about it.

How did you get started with Meditation?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 09:53 PM PDT

I see a lot of people here saying, "I've meditated every day for 10,000 years." But I've never seen someone tell how they got started with meditation, did they use any apps, how much time did they spend when they were beginners. Do you guys know a good guided meditation app or course?

I know paid apps but I'm looking for something to just get started so I would love to know about some fully free applications.

Also, how much time do you recommend I spend on meditation as a beginner? I wanna be consistent and not lose my streak so I think 5-10 minutes should be enough. What do you think? How much time did you spend when you got started?

    Trying to meditate

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 09:20 PM PDT

I have been trying for a while to meditate, but I can only get about half way I guess you could say. I'm ADHD so it makes it hard since I always have random thoughts going in and out of my mind. One way I have done say half way meditation, was talking a shower in the dark, focusing on the water hitting my body. Still very hard for me since my ADHD tends to interrupt me very often.

I have been meditating both while high and while sober. In my 3 months and many hours neditating I can truhfully say that I am awareness. Just pure awareness. I asked myself, am I seeking ego death or enlightenment? But the truth is all we are is awareness

I enjoy meditation but I find it hard to clear my head sometimes. I wanted to know what other people do to clear their minds so that maybe I can find a way that works best for me. If there's already a post on this I apologize for the inconvenience and would appreciate being redirected. Thank you.
