Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:45 AM PDT I have struggled with OCD, anxiety and depression my whole life. I'm sure there are others here who also have struggled with mental health in some way. It's a terrible disease and I have spent my life trying to find a "hobby" that helps mute the intrusive thoughts, and ever since I started my yoga journey a year ago yoga has really transformed me as a person. I've started to write in my journal every day and what I wrote yesterday truly made me realize how much yoga has changed my mental health for the better. I hope you enjoy and can relate in some way. Last night, I did an outdoor yoga class with my favorite instructor. Due to COVID this is the first class I have done in a very long time that wasn't just me doing it alone in my apartment. It was such a beautiful class and I really felt the energy around me, with everyone coming together to practice what we love the most during this troubling time. As I was flowing and looked up at the beautiful sky with palm trees surrounding me, and that moment I really felt alive. I don't remember the last time I felt this way, as I spend most of my days struggling with my intrusive thoughts. All I was feeling at the time was pure bliss and my OCD wasn't even close to getting in the way. All of my problems disappeared. During the class, I smiled, I laughed, I even teared up a bit. During Savasana, I closed my eyes and let everything go. My favorite part of the class is when the instructor sang "Lokah samastah Sukino Bhavantu". I hummed along and felt the vibrations go all around my body. Times like this, when I feel alive, with so much positive energy inside me, it makes me so grateful to have began my yoga journey. I really don't know who I would be without it today. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:10 PM PDT Hello mods if there is any problem with the post please message me before deletation. I am not self promoting nor is this spam, simply advice for the people I get NOTHING out of this.
Mind racing is no problem, the problem is you identify yourself as the mind that is racing. The mind is racing but you say "I am all over the place"If you were to see with clear eyes, you would see that you are completely still and alert, and you are perceiving neutrally and calmly the mind that is racing and is all over the place. The mind is not what you are, and when we mistake ourselves to be the racing mind, we ourselves feel like we racing with the mind. The truth is, that which is aware of the mind racing, is not racing, and that is what you truly are. Just stay as what you truly are, be aware of your own stillness.
Again, these are simply thoughts appearing, you are not the one caught up, thoughts are simply appearing, you are only "caught up" if you believe you are caught up, otherwise; everything is simply perceived. Nobody is caught up. "I am caught up" is merely another thought appearing in the vast conscisousnsess. The thought is pretending to be you but it is not actually you since you are that stillness which is aware of the thought "I am caught up". What are you truly that you can get "caught up"? You speak about yourself so lightly as if you know what your essence is but actually have you looked into what you truly are? Ask yourself "Who am I?" And do not look for any answers from the mind. No thought that appears can be the truth about who you are because you are that which is perceiving the thought, the thought can't know anything about that which is perceiving it. Once you realize what you truly are, and that you are formless awareness and know it experientially (by being aware of being aware) then you see that in fact "I am caught up" is literally just a thought and you are that formless awareness which is in fact no caught up but aware of caught up and can say "I am caught up" although obviously even this happens in the flow of life, simply you are identifying as the thought itself instead of the stillness which is aware of the thoughts.
Don't be so quick to say "It goes off", it is expected that it will "go off" because you must transcend this tendency to put your attention on the misery and failure again. Simply calmly shift your attention back onto the awareness which is aware of the experience of being aware in this present moment. Every single time attention wanders - even that you perceive, keep shifting the attention back unto the awareness which is aware of being aware in the present moment. Stay as that.
Well nothing positive comes out of it when you don't know what you are doing. Follow my advice and you will see how extremely effective true meditation is and you will see immediate results and peace, serenity, and even joy arising in you as you follow closely what I am pointing to.
That is natural, the feeling that something is missing/wrong/off is completely "normal", most people experience it and it is nothing to be afraid of. It is literally just a feeling. Thoughts, feelings, emotions and sensations all appear within the consciousness, but they all come and go. Not all the time you feel like something is missing. In deep sleep nothing is missing. So what can possibly be missing now? You have nothing in deep sleep, yet you are completely content. You are awake and you have all this abundance of life and you believe something is missing just because you have a feeling? It is simply not true, do not believe and identify as this feeling of lack, it is just a conditioning that was forced upon us in this corrupted and ignorant society. We are outgrowing that, and coming to see earth as heaven again. Trust my words and most importantly yourself that is resonating with this answer. So the feeling of "something missing/off/wrong" is perceived, that is all. It is simply a feeling perceived, do not interpret it, simply be aware of it, don't avoid it, don't shy away from it, meet it as it is, completely be here now and be aware of being aware, and if the feeling appears - do not fight it, let it be just as it is, and be there as a detached perceiver which is impersonal, a feeling is nothing bad, just another object perceived in consciousness. The more you resist this object; the more it persists. So let in this feeling of something wrong completely, do not resist it, and you will see naturally it dissolves into the silence of being. Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:46 AM PDT I was in class last night and part of our cool down towards the end was bridge pose. I've never felt even close to being ready for wheel but last night was that magical moment it felt different and I just knew I could probably get up into wheel. I was exhausted so didn't want to push it right then but I tried today and got all the way up! Just lasted a couple seconds but after I came down I was able to hold the modification with my head down with arms bent. I know this group appreciates that feeling of suddenly being close to a pose you felt wasn't possible. [link] [comments] |

Does anyone else have trouble with transitioning from 3 legged dog to low lunge? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:40 PM PDT I have only been practicing since May so I'm not sure if this is just a quirk of my body proportions or if it's something that will improve as I get better at yoga. When I transition from three-legged dog to low lunge, I can't complete the move in one motion because I don't have enough "space" to pull my leg through with both my hands on the floor. I don't know if I'm explaining this right but even with my knee pressed into my chest my foot will hit the floor a few inches behind the intended position. I then have to lift up one of my hands in order to raise my chest enough to allow the foot to come forward to the intended position directly under my knee. When I am in low lunge I stay up on my fingertips - if I come down to flat hands my leg will be pressed uncomfortably into my chest. I know this might just be a "me" thing (long legs, short arms/torso) but I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced this. [link] [comments] |

Any at home practice injury stories or cautionary tales? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:29 AM PDT Still don't know where I went wrong — the major downside of doing yoga alone. But I tweaked my neck in plow and had to whisper-yell for my boyfriend to help me out of the position. Luckily, it seems I only injured a muscle and my dignity. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:11 AM PDT I have been reading a lot about the masters of meditation. I have connected with many yogis and have heard their stories. I've gone through books and autobiographies. My goal is to gather all this data on all the mystics. Here is a special story from my yogi friend Ronak Gajjar sharing his story spent at Neem Karoli Baba's Ashram. Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:24 PM PDT Hey, I just started my practice, and my teacher does it in the park for free but we haven't learned any specific poses. How am I supposed to learn to do it on my own? Am I taking the wrong classes if my goal is to be like a lone monk or the karate kid for example? Any help would be very appreciated. Namaste. [link] [comments] |
Pose/flow recommendations for recovering from an illness? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:06 PM PDT I'm currently recovering from COVID (thankfully a mild case that I was able to manage at home) and I want to start getting moving again. I was about two weeks into daily yoga when I got sick and I'm still really tired a lot, so I don't anticipate being able to do any serious flow. But are there any poses or combinations of poses I can try that will help me get moving and feel better? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:34 AM PDT Hey everybody :) I've had a really nice mat for about two years now. It was a Jessica Olie one... very sticky and good, however I had an awful shipping experience, was told it was shipped to me but it never was, and when I messaged about it they were extremely rude, fully said they were not at fault, and said they would only ship me a new one if I sent them full money for a second mat! Luckily it was figured out, but that left a really bad taste in my mouth. I accidentally destroyed this in a few ways. First, I washed it just a little too intensely (I guess? It always worked fine before) but over the weekend it just never dried, and in the places it did the water/dye fully came out. There are a lot of weird white marks on it now. It was getting old anyways and it hadn't been washing well as is (I would use a cloth with soap and water like suggested, but the older it got the more dust and dirt would stick to it from the cloth instead of actually coming off). I had it lying out to dry and then accidentally stepped on it with Birkenstocks and it totally tore through the mat where I stepped! I figured between these issues, it's time to retire this mat and look into a new one. I had been using mediocre/cheap Lululemon ones before the JO one, so I've never used a real high quality one like this before. I absolutely loved how sticky it was, but it was also EXTREMELY heavy. I also would like something that can clean a little better, but I'm not sure if this is maybe just something that happens with sticky mats? Again, I don't really know too much about these. It said to wipe the mat with soap and a microfiber cloth, which I had been doing, but eventually, the dirt/dust/tiny things would seem to just stick onto the mat instead of actually being "cleaned" and it was getting gross. I live in Canada, so preferably something that can ship easily without drama would be nice as well lol. I like to switch between yin and vinyasa styles, some days real slow long stretches and others just a nice flow. I switch between yoga with adrienne and sarah beth yoga on youtube, or do my own thing. Does anybody have any suggestions or advice? Any good places beyond Lululemon in Canada? I truly have no clue so I would appreciate any help :) thank you yogis! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:22 AM PDT Just seeing if anyone has some good reccomendations, or any favourite videos jump out at you. To clarify a bit. I'm a stiff as hell guy who lifts weights and does BJJ. I've been meaning to start stretching/yoga regularly and I'm now committed to starting a morning stretching/yoga practice. I have been to maybe 20 classes so not a total beginner, but relatively new. I have a fair bit of pain in the areas mentioned in the post, and limited mobility from years of heavy weights and no stretching, but no major impairments. I've tried a few videos but I think they seem to be focused on lots of poses and getting your heart rate up. I have that aspect covered in my other endeavours and I'm looking for something that holds positions longer. Maybe not as long or slow as a Yin class, but focuses on regaining lost mobility and reducing pain. Especially in the areas I mentioned. Ideally I kind of want something between 15-40 minutes that I can do daily for a while at least. I will probably do some additional work as well as I have a gravity yoga program and a 21 day hip opening challenge from them that I may supplement with. As well as tons of bands, rollers, and all those goodies. If anyone has suggestions for videos or routines. Or maybe think my approach to slower and longer holds isn't going to get me where I want to go. Im open to hearing it. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:07 AM PDT Hi guys, long story short I now have a prosthetic elbow and in a week the cast comes off. I start PT then but a main concern of mine is that almost all of my favorite poses incorporarte a lot of arm movement and obviously this is something I will not be able to do for a while and even then my mobility won't be the same. Has anyone experienced this and found ways to substitute? And if anyone has advice about or specific helpful poses I would be very grateful. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2020 03:39 AM PDT Sorry if this is a newbie question. I've never really been to a yoga class, just used apps or Yoga with Adriene YouTube videos. What is the best way to make sure my alignment is right? I know some of my postures will be out of whack by at least a little, just not sure where to start! [link] [comments] |
