Meditation: My urges to watch porn are greatly diminished after emotional release through meditation

My urges to watch porn are greatly diminished after emotional release through meditation

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:10 AM PDT

I (early 20s male) have been going to therapy and unearthing suppressed emotions. So when I meditate, I do a form of loving kindness meditation which focuses on first bringing to mind those traumas and then wishing loving kindness.

Whenever I bring up the traumas, I have an emotional release. Usually it physically manifests in my body and crying. What I notice is, that before doing this, my mind really wants to watch porn instead.

I'm a recovering porn addict and have struggles for years. I'm several months off it but still have strong urges. But it surprised me that whenever I sit down to do this emotional release, my mind strongly craves porn.

After the emotional release? I don't want porn at all. The urges are still there but much less powerful. Barely noticeable

I guess growing up, not knowing how to handle emotions, I suppressed them with porn. Porn became my coping mechanism. And I quickly became addicted to the lack of feeling it gave me. The numbness.

The thing is that it's a viscous cycle. I would relapse to porn but then feel shame and low energy among other bad things.

Now due to this emotional release meditation, I can definitely confirm for myself that porn was just a way to respond to my emotions. The desire for it is so weak afterwards.

Meditation is not a quick fix.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:36 PM PDT

As much as I love to hear the stories about meditation and how wonderful it can be, I believe hearing this from the onset can set a false expectation on what meditation and mindfulness can do for someone. And having these expectations will actually slow your progress. In fact, the trick is to have no expectations at all.

Meditation is hard, it takes a lot of patience and practice. It doesn't end when your session ends. The benefits come slowly and subtly. It will be frustrating. You will doubt your practice. You will not want to do it. You will wonder if it is helping at all.

So I would like to share my story, I have been meditating for over a year now, nearly every single day. I had tried meditation a few years ago and I gave up. The first attempt at meditation, I had high expectation and I wanted it to solve all my problems. After some time, I felt it wasn't doing enough and it wasn't worth the time -- I gave it up entirely. I never spent the time to really learn about meditation and mindfulness. I just sat and expected to get all the wonderful benefits everyone talks about.

But then, I started again about a year ago when my anxiety was through the roof, I could no longer handle it. I needed any relief I could get, no matter how small. So, I started small, just a few minutes every morning. My expectations were limited, I figured I would take whatever came, no matter how limited the results may be. This time around, I took the time to learn, to really deepen my understanding. I read about Buddhism and the theories about meditation and mindfulness (non self, craving, aversion, suffering, impermanence). I must have read almost 10 books, I listened to Dharma talks. I spent time really thinking about these things. I committed myself to meditation every single morning, as part of an established routine. I slowly built up my time on the cushion. I spent time trying to practice mindfulness during the day -- while I walked, while I showered, while I brushed my teeth. Any small practice I could find.

And here I am today. I feel like I have progressed, but I will admit it is very subtle. I still have stress, I still get angry, I am still lost in thought most of the day, I still do things I wish I wouldn't. I am not sure any of my closest friends or family could even tell the difference. I haven't had any breakthrough experience or groundbreaking insights. But I think about being mindful a lot. I feel slightly less reactive. I feel slightly less stressed, a little more focused and I feel like I understand myself a little better. I feel like I am progressing. And for that I am grateful, and I am hopeful to continue my journey, understanding that progress will come slowly and there will be setbacks, but I know in my heart of hearts this is the path to my freedom.

    • Daily 5-10 minute guided sessions (over video/audio)
    • Optionally share daily reflections with others in group
    • Video call at end of 7 days, led by an experienced teacher

Would anyone be interested in trying this with me?

I started on on a 30 day challenge of completing 20 minutes of meditation each day. I decided to extend the challenge and today was exactly day 600 of my challenge! I have experienced a world of benefits and do not plan on stopping this challenge ever!

    Please advice ☹️

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:37 PM PDT

So I get intrusive thoughts and paranoia a lot I don't really understand it but I've always had it my whole life, like if you were to tell me "chips have something in it that messes up your mind." I could be paranoid about that for a while and have to tell myself it's irrational but my mind would still worry.

Like my brain is sensitive to that stuff!! It sucks when it's like bigger things I get paranoid about. Like I stopped smoking weed bc some girl said ghosts get to you when you're high 😐 and I've been upset that I couldn't smoke anymore lmao

Anyways I started meditating and it's been super helpful. I have CPTSD and lotsss of deep issues from that and meditating feels like it's clarifying and healing everything on the deepest almost psychedelic and peaceful level. It feels like my deepest traumas are being hugged. It helps me process all the pains and sometimes even cry mid meditation.

I always listen to those hertz meditative frequencies and music on YouTube while doing it and it helps a LOT. Like so much wow.

I meditated just for 10 minutes before work and went really deep into it and felt myself saying "it's okay to be upset. You have every right to feel the way you do. You experienced a great loss." And then I cried and it felt therapeutic. And then I envisioned myself standing by an ocean and suddenly I randomly envisioned a lover next to me hugging me and then I envisioned being teleported to space and envisioned myself as just specks of dust in the universe in this rat maze of life. And I felt ego lifting a bit and it was very enlightening and comforting.

And so I talked about to some people today at work about meditation and then my manager piped in and randomly said that meditating can be so bad and that it can do so much damage and referred to meditation like it was this scary thing and she was like "never go deep into the state!"

And I'm like ?? I go deep into the state all the time that's how I'm healing my brain and deep PTSDs?? But now I just feel scared to meditate again but I know I really need to. Like my whole paranoia thing is acting up.

So if someone could give me advice I'd appreciate it so much ☹️

Thank you for being you - What 5 months of meditation has taught me

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 12:00 AM PDT

Just hit 90 days straight of daily meditation and 42 hours of total practice in 5 months.

Being forced to lockdown 5,800 miles away from my family and completely alone in my studio apartment in SF was one of the most depressing times in my life.

With the world in turmoil and everyone's health at risk, I grappled every day with the thought of dying alone and my parents passing while home on Guam without me.

Trapped in a box, I realized the only thing I could control was my mind, and so I turned to meditation.

The 1st time I did it, the world literally looked different when I opened my eyes. I wasn't instantly better, but those 10 min of quiet gave me reprieve from the weeks of anguish.

Slowly but surely, through months of daily meditation, I pulled myself out of the hole and figured out how to thrive in quarantine.

After a lifetime of chasing my passions and always striving to be better, meditation has taught me that, even at your lowest point, it's ok to be you.

Practicing it daily is a reminder that awareness leads to calm, calm leads to rationality, and rationality leads to dignity.

Meditating doesn't make you perfect; it makes you realize that expecting perfection is judgement and that it's better to live in the present while giving it everything you got.

Ultimately, that means a life with less regrets, which is all we can ask for once our run is over🏆

    Meditation is transcendence of mind.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:26 PM PDT

meditation is transcendence of thoughts. It's a jump. Meditation is not an experience, it's the very nature of human being.

Meditation is illogical and irrational to the mind that's why very few venture into. And those who venture into are greatly rewarded in terms of inner and outer richness both.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for being real about their meditation practice. If we only read the books of master meditators, we might think we were doing something wrong. I am grateful to everyone on this page for their tips and experiences, as it is already helping and encouraging me in my practice. If you're reading this, you're fucking awesome. Keep up the mindfulness, fellow friends.

The side effects of the shift to universal consciousness happening in the universe right now

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:57 PM PDT

These are side effects of the shift in consciousness that is currently happening in incredible rates by the highest power of the universe.

    If you would like to live in this "WOW" consciousness all the time, and not experience only glimpses of it, I recommend reading this;

It is only when you take yourself to be personal (body and mind) that you have problems, suffering, grief, doubt, fear, etc.

When you see that you (who you think you are, personally) does not actually exist, but only as a thought appearing in the consciousness, that is believed in and not discerned to be just a thought, we mistake a thought to be ourselves, and therefore we don't experience life fully, we experience it through a limited box that is the personal identity.

Human beings are now awakening to the true nature of themselves, which is formless awareness which has no personal identity, therefore it is free of suffering, it is full of joy, peace, love, compassion, clarity.

To experience your true self, simply put all thoughts, emotions, sensations, identification, memory, past, present, future, imagination aside, and simply be aware of being aware.

Rest your attention on that which can't be putted aside. It just is.

That is it. That emptiness and pure awareness is what you truly are. It is the ever-present unchanging fact of yourself. Everything else is changeful, it comes and goes, it is not real, not true, it is completely false. Only this clarity of being is true, only this impersonal love is ever-present and it is what you truly are beyond the illusions and delusions appearing as thoughts, emotions and sensations in consciousness. You are that in which it all appears itself. Everything else is a misidentification of what truly is.

Thoughts will keep appearing and they will say "I am sad" or "I am this person" but simply notice they are only thoughts, emotions or sensations, they are not ultimately true, but only a temporary phenomenon appearing because of our habit to believe them. Continue confirming that you are in fact this pure awareness which is aware of being aware, you are shapeless, indescribable truly. Make it a habit to silently shift your attention towards the experience of being aware in the present moment.

Is this a side effect of meditation?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:42 PM PDT

I am a spiritual person and have always believed that we are more than flesh and blood, but souls and spirits that exist in an natural body for a short time. The more I meditate the less I care about ideals of fame and money and more I just want and enjoyable life with my husband.

But I have been having this feeling and it was brought to my attention more after having some special brownies. I sometimes feel more "alive" and more "conscious" so to speak. I start to realize like wow, I'm walking about and doing life and sometimes I get anxious, but mostly I just say, "wow that was a surreal feeling." Does anyone feel this way, because it's a cool and a little bit intimidating of a feeling.

Still unable to stop living in the future despite 2 years of meditation. Any tips?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:41 PM PDT

I've been meditating on and off for about 2 years. Most of the time I meditate 6 days a week and I skipped a month or so both last year and earlier this year. I just do 20 minutes of sitting, focusing on my breath, and letting thoughts come and go. I recently started including the visualization of tranquil environments and affirmitions of inner peace.

It has been successful in that I'm a lot calmer in addition to being slower to anger. I'm a bit more present as well. The thing is I'm having a hard time with letting go of future expectations, especially when it comes to career/money/family. I'm constantly fantasizing about a future where I'm making good money etc. I got a new job and all I can think about is the potential success. I know that this is unhealthy, leads to disappointment, and its better to take it one day at a time. Despite knowing this, I'm finding it difficult to truly internalize that mindset to the point where I stop living in the future.

Any tips as to how I can truly be present? Is it just a matter of making an effort to practice meditation outside of my daily sessions?

    Personality types of Meditators

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 09:07 PM PDT

At a wild attempt to gather an idea of the different types of people who meditate, has anyone ever done the Myers-Briggs personality test? If so, what was their primitive traits? I'm an INTP and I believe the reason why I meditate is because I have unprocessed data in my subconscious picked up at any point that requires filtering.

Would love to hear more from you all.

    Thanks in advance.

It took me a while, but I am here now.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 07:14 PM PDT

I have always been impulsive. I act quickly, react rather than respond. You could feel it in my energy: good but restless. I started sitting with my self in jan 2019. I sat and meditated everyday for over 8 months. My level of calmness improved in this time, but It always felt like i was not quite there. Here. The theory of observing the mind, and letting go of resistance was a solid one. The facts were there: if you catch yourself thinking about things that make you feel bad, stop, and think of something good... then youd feel good. It worked out that way for me. Then this past week, my wifi went out. No television, slow phone data, nowhere to escape to. So i had to sit with myself. This time it wasnt a 10 to 20 minute excersise I could muddle through. This was the real deal. After the first 24 hours of sitting with my thoughts, months of practice started to kick in. Knowledge turned into wisdom. Mundane things like doing dishes, walking, even brushing my teeth, became more engaging. Other thing like sketching, coloring, running: stuff that seemed fun in the past, but not enough to engage me, became very interesting and relaxing. It took some time for me to realize that life is happening here, now. It took me a while, but I am here now.

    Question about musical meditation

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 01:07 AM PDT

I've been finding myself listening to music a lot before I go to sleep, specifically artists like Merzbow, pharmakon, puce Mary, and others who, if you don't know, have a very experimental, harsh noise, and or avant- grade style. When I listen I find myself in a trance like state, and I don't really consider the way I listen to them to be anything like the way I listen to music in different contexts, anyway I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this too, or if this would even be considered meditation.

    August Meditation Challenge 2020

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 12:22 AM PDT

    Hi all!

We all know that it can be hard to start and maintain a regular sitting practice. So I wondered if anyone would care to join me in a daily meditation challenge for August?

u/WCBH86 set up a monthly meditation challenge for the last 2 years or so, and it's really seemed to strike a chord here and received lots of engagement and positive feedback over that time. u/WCBH86 stuck to daily meditation throughout much of that time (struggled a little some months, but he did have a two year old son at the moment!), and many others who took part have managed consistent practice throughout that time. It provided a lovely sense of community and lots of encouragement. I'd like to continue his efforts.

    So, here's the deal:

You choose how much time you want to spend meditating each day, and what sort of meditation you're going to practice. But you commit to practicing every day for the month of August, and maybe check in on here with others who are doing the same. The idea is to have some group support/accountability, to help you stick to daily practice all month long.

If it goes well, then we rinse and repeat for the month of September. I'll make a new post for that when the time comes.

Post a comment below if you'd like to take part. And if you'd like an accountability partner to really help see you through your daily practice, post a comment below that says "accountability partner needed". Then wait for someone else to reply to your comment, and say "I'll be your partner". You can help keep each other in check throughout the month.

For those who use Insight Timer, there is a group for this called Meditation Month. Feel free to join up and find some extra accountability there.

For those who use it, there is also a discord server for this : https://discord.gg/xcQAGNa

Good luck folks. Hope this helps some of you start a meditation habit and others get back into one.

TLDR: Encouragement and support for people trying to make daily meditation stick!

NOTE: I like to encourage everyone who wants to take part and who leaves a comment below by wishing them luck and other little things in response. But I don't reply to people who have asked for an accountability partner in their comment because I don't want them to get a little "new message" icon and get hopeful only to find it's me saying "good luck!", and also because I think people scanning comments to see if anyone needs a partner might more easily look past those that already have a reply, even if the reply is just from me and isn't actually an offer to be a partner. Just wanted to let those folks who don't get a reply from me know that it's nothing personal! I wish you luck too, and am pleased you're taking part! :)

NOTE 2: Since starting these monthly challenges, the Insight Timer group has grown to 900+ members, and the Discord even more than that! So join in and help make meditation a regular part of your life!

    I Need Some Advice

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 12:08 AM PDT

INTRO: I'm 15 years old and have been meditating for around two years now. I only Meditate when I start drifting into a negative headspace that may lead to Issues with me and people around me further down the line. I suffer through depression and anxiety but ever since I discovered meditation I've been very Healthy Both mentally and physically. DISCLAIMER this doesn't mean it cured my depression or anxiety but as long as I keep up maintenance with Meditating and staying healthy my depression nor Anxiety will act up.

CONFLICT: Now that I gave a quick summary of myself let me introduce you to my current conflict. Lately I've been stuck on a schedule of working out, Watching YouTube, and playing video games. As you can imagine...THIS IS TERRIBLE. It finally caught up to me earlier today while playing video games and watching YouTube at the same time and I suddenly had a Meltdown. I didn't freak out or anything but I began to feel dread, emptiness,Depressed,Lost and fear like if the News Channel were to say an asteroid was gonna end all life on Earth Tomorrow. later today I meditated to seek why and where these emotions derived from by reflecting on my actions and thoughts of recent time. I believe I Came to a Conclusion.

CONCLUSION: I've really been mistreating my brain and therefor my Psyche. All I've done this summer is Play Video games,Workout and watch YouTube for hours. Along with this I've not really been social to anyone even my family which is important for one's mind especially during quarantine. Last but not least I haven't put time and effort into reflecting on myself nor my actions.

WHAT I LEARNED: I've been Taking In soo much time with Unnecessary Entertainment and Knowledge rather than doing Anything involving Basic And Crucial human activities like talking to someone, self-reflecting, and eating together. Thus this led to me feeling empty and lonely due to me not doing anything that involved productivity or emotion for the past two months which left me stuck in a trance that I luckily got myself out of.

YOUR THOUGHTS: I wanna hear what you guys have to say! Do you think That I found the source of my Issue? Have you guys gone through something similar? How did you handle it?

Please let me know and thank you for listening

Anyone who has practiced Kundalini yoga, what exactly is it?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:27 PM PDT

I'm curious about what kundalini yoga achieves. I've done a small amount of research on it and I don't seem to fully get it. Based on what I do know, it seems like something I'd like to start practicing, but I need to understand it first.

I thought I should ask for personal experiences on here for anyone who wants to share.

Don't call it ego, call it what it is: the blah blah blah.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:28 PM PDT

The misunderstanding and arguments around ego as a tool in meditation have made it largely useless. I recently came across the work of Gary Weber who calls it "the blah blah blah" which is so much more evocative, disdainful, and precise about what is being talked about when people talk about "ego" in meditation.
