Suggestions how to loosen hips? Can't bring knee to chest.

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 03:40 PM PDT

I've started yoga this year, and am doing Adriene's 30 day challenge. I have one problem that's really stopping me from achieving a lot, like knees to chest, forward fold, anything that has me bending my hips over my legs.
There's a muscle(?) below each hip, in line with the middle of the thigh. (Sorry I don't know what to call it). That muscle always bunches up very tightly, and a little painfully. It feels like someone's put a little ball there that is preventing me from bending. It's not a problem if I'm cross legged or otherwise have my legs apart and out of the way.

Does anyone know any stretches or poses that could loosen it up and help me bend and fold at the hips?

Maybe some help on this terminology as well, haha.

Backpack with straps to carry yoga mat?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 01:31 PM PDT

Looking for a backpack to carry a yoga mat (like this one). I've taken a look through the sub and found recommendations of ones that look good, but then when I go to search for the bag it's been discontinued so I haven't actually found anything that looks like what I want that's still available.

I want an actual backpack over just a strap to carry as I also want to be able to carry yoga blocks with me and maybe a change of clothes.

I like the look of the Lululemon wanderlust backpack (the pic above) but it's been discontinued and I can't find it anywhere.

    Any recommendations would be helpful!

    Suggestions for aerial yoga tutorials/guides?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 06:27 PM PDT

First time poster, so I hope it's ok to post this here!

I've been an avid yogi for years and I've dabbled in some antigravity/aerial yoga. I loved it and decided to buy a rig for home use in light of covid.

I'm looking for some instructional books/online PDFs to get me going on my own.

I know there's a lot of videos out there but I'd like a guide to make sure I get my basics and foundation solid so I can safely practice and get the most of it on my own.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you :)

    Lose your interest in practice?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 07:57 AM PDT

I've been struggling the last couple months to get on the mat after my studio closed and I lost access to all my favorite teachers. Anyone else lost their interest in practice and struggled to regain it? What did you do to get back on track?

    Thanks for any advice.

    SI Joint Issues

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 10:42 AM PDT

    Hi yogis,

I've been practicing yoga for almost 10 years, I'm now in my late 20's. I took my 200 hour teacher training early in my journey and like to think I'm fairly knowledgeable about anatomy, alignment and safety. I'm reaching out here because I feel like I'm out of options to continue my yogic asana path.

My practice is now accompanied by incessant pain and irritation in my SI joint. It's a common occurrence for me to have to take a month or more off from practicing to let the inflammation heal so I can live pain free again. I can't for the life of me figure out how to enjoy asana without also being in pain.

Pretty much any forward folds (especially seated) and any pose with open hips (even Warrior II) irritate my SI. Although vinyasa is my preference, I was trained in a Iyengar studio, and I've taken a diligent approach to using props, modifications and being very aware of alignment and muscle activation to try to minimize the risk of irritating my SI, but no luck. I've tried avoiding forward folds and destabilizing poses altogether but that hasn't been fool proof.

I think my solution lies in attending physical therapy to try to figure out what exactly is going on, but unfortunately my insurance doesn't cover that. I've researched which muscles need to be strengthened to reduce the risk of SI injury (and tons of exercises to reduce the SI pain) but haven't had any luck in that front either.

I'm really just at a loss. I love asana and how it makes the rest of my body feel and I'm genuinely sad that I can't figure out how to manage my pain while still maintaining a regular practice. Has anyone navigated an issue like this before? Would love any advice and suggestions you could offer :)

Does anyone have any good yoga videos that I can do with a hurt foot?

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 03:29 PM PDT

I stepped on a nail today. Does anyone have some good videos that are mainly sitting or in positions that don't put a lot of weight on the feet? I can still bend and flex them, it just hurts to put my full weight on it. Thank you!!

    Cues for Chaturanga Dandasana

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 10:56 AM PDT

My yoga studio has closed due to Covid and I'm really struggling with proper positioning in this pose without an instructor. I don't have a good way to see myself and I think my alignment is poor. Any ideas how to work on this?

    A beginner needing advice

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 02:38 PM PDT

So I started my practice very recently. I'm currently using an app called 'Keep Yoga' and it has a nice week long program for core sculpting, and that has been my practice so far.

How do I progress from here?

Is it possible the injury I sustained when in my youth and the terrible jobs I have had that destroyed my back are why I can’t deep squat ? I measure flexibility by squatting. Saw a homey super deep squat was a bit upset at my self for not being able to. What can I do to improve ?
