San Salutations (Surya Namaskar) enough for one yoga session each day? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 03:14 PM PDT Due to the pandemic I decided to try out yoga. Had enough of the gym and body weight workouts, decided to do something new. Started yoga 5 weeks ago. Doing it 3 days a week for 30 to 40 mins followed by a 30 min walk outside. I did that routine for a 2 week period and then discovered Surya Namaskar. Since then my yoga session everyday consists of 15 to 18 Surya Namaskar folliwed by a 30 min walk outside. I like the sun salutations, it helps me stay calm relaxed and the movement feels natural to me. Keeps me stretched out and not sore. I just wanted to know if sun salutations is enough for a session or should I add other forms or Youtube styles? Any thoughts or opinions to add to my current yoga session. [link] [comments] |
New (ish) to yoga, Feet keep slipping Posted: 29 Jul 2020 04:33 PM PDT Hi All So after doing yoga classes I have been doing yoga at home with the "down dog" app and I love it! But I kept feeling my feet slipping so I bough a more expensive so called Non Slip mat but I am still experiencing the same problems as soon as I start to sweat like 15 minutes in I find myself slipping and sliding. I have used powder on my feet and I will stop and dry my feet at time with a small towel. Any other tips or advice to help? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:42 PM PDT I'm just getting into yoga and I'm hoping someone has some advice. I used to be an extremely competitive long distance runner, then I started getting a lot of pain and stiffness in my calves and ankles after hard runs. I was diagnosed with pretty severe tendonitis in both Achilles at age 25 and I haven't really been able to run more than a mile in five years. (If I say screw it and run anyways I can barely walk for the next few days.) I got a physical therapy routine that I do every day, but it's just managed the pain, hasn't really improved anything. I honestly have barely more than 90° flexion in my feet, so down dog is really hard for me, but I keep working at it. Any ideas for yoga flows or poses to help increase Achilles flexibility? I'm not honestly expecting a miracle, but man I would kill to be able to run again. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Jul 2020 05:53 PM PDT When I go to do dolphin my arms want to angle in. (Think elbows out, hands in) I M capable of correcting it and forcing them to be parallel to each other, but it's really uncomfortable. Not painful, but not good. It feels like my shoulders are just not capable of it. After about 10-15 seconds it's uncomfortable to the point that I have to come out of it and let my arms hang naturally. What am I doing wrong? Or what can I do to improve flexibility? (I would say that generally speaking I'm pretty flexible) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jul 2020 09:00 AM PDT So I (M28) am pretty out of shape and have been trying to get into a workout routine. I've done yoga a few times in my life and have always enjoyed it when I go regularly. I figured I'd give it the old college try again. My experiences have always been a hot yoga class and I like how I feel after them. Would eventually like to get back in to those but they're always Bikram or something more intense I'm not sure I'm ready for yet. Covid also makes me a little hesitant to get into a hot sweaty room with other people. I want to find a sequence I can do at home every day that will help me get back into the routine of doing yoga. I usually use yoga with Adrienne on YouTube which is nice but he beginners sequence is really short and I want something that's more like a 40-60 min workout. My end goal is to get in better shape and be able to do some of the more intense styles of yoga with a better flow or more demanding poses. Any suggestions for a good beginners sequences that would either give me a good foundation for any style or help me build towards those more intense styles? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Wrist issues after not practicing for a while? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 08:53 AM PDT My yoga studio reopened this week! I went to class on Sunday and yesterday (Tuesday) for the first time since March 12 (I did not practice at home). So I'm a little out of shape, inflexible but nothing too bad except my right WRIST! My right hand is my dominant hand, I work a desk job from 9-5 and have never sprained or broken my wrist or anything. But I noticed in the last two classes my right wrist hurts so bad that I can't even chaturanga or do a plank for too long. IDK if its from not practicing for 4 months and that I just need to get the strength back or what. Any advice on how to fix this problem? Any pre class stretches or things I can do outside of class to strengthen my wrist? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Yoga and accurate height measurements Posted: 29 Jul 2020 02:46 PM PDT I know there are plenty of threads on here asking if yoga makes you taller, and from what I understand this is a common phenomena amongst people who practice yoga. But has anyone actually measured themselves standing as tall and as straight as possible, then practiced yoga for X amount of time, and did the same an notice an improvement? If so, how much? The reason I ask is because I've seen plenty of people here claim to have grown 0.5-1.5 inches after practicing yoga for a few months but I wonder if this is really an increase or them just having better posture during the measurement i.e. if they had stood as straight as possible before doing the yoga would they have gotten the same "results". Curious to hear what you all have to say! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Jul 2020 10:25 AM PDT Hello all, During my exploration about meditation and practice for past 3 months, I wanted to deepen my practice by learning about breathing exercises before and after meditation session. I recently started doing "Kapalbharti" after meditation and "Alom vilom" before doing meditation. I have heard so many benefits of these breathings exercises from yogis, that it is mind blowing ! It is all over youtube. Does any of you have experince with practicing alom vilom pranayam and Kapalbharti ? What are your thoughts on it in general and specially able to strengthen meditation ?
