[COMP] Forward fold- I know this is bad. I am working on my hamstring flexibility (they are insanely tight) but this is the first time I got head to knees. How do I work on straightening my spine now?

    Yoga routine at 88 yrs

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 03:47 PM PDT

A yoga teacher once said to us: "You're as young as your spine".
Ever since then, I have concentrated on yoga stretching exercises and
poses that strengthen and stretch the spine both lengthwise and
laterally. Also important are joints: knees, ankles, hips,
shoulders, and neck in particular, so these I incorporate in my
routine. Finally, upside-down poses help reduce blood pressure and
heart rate. I do some strengthening poses, but concentrate mainly on
    flexibility.

As a general principle we were taught to synchronise movements with
breathing, and for every pose to do a counter pose. So I follow
    these principles.

I am now almost 88 yrs. and have found this routine enormously
beneficial in keeping me flexible. Over the years I have modified
and added poses, and taken suggestions from pilates as well. I do
this routine in about half an hour, several times weekly. If I
neglect them, I feel more stiff. I am able to walk correctly,
upright but relaxed, and still enjoy country walking - again
concentrating more on relaxed enjoyment rather than stamina.

I would appreciate feedback - tips on how to improve postures or more to
    add.

    First time self-practice

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 02:46 PM PDT

Hello yogis I am not new to yoga, I've been practicing irregularly for 4-5 years. However, it has always been with an instructor live or online videos.

Today was my first try without any instructor telling me what to do. I found a certain flow in my body and pushed it to the right angles to find good stretches and poses. I did this while listening to my music. On my own time.

    It's liberating in a sense.

Is this something familiar to some of you? What are your experience about free self-yoga?

Are there monthly calendars/YouTube playlists that include videos from multiple teachers?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:29 AM PDT

I followed Adriene's calendars for a long time but I eventually started to branch out because I just needed a little more then what she offers on her channel. Lately I have been enjoying yoga with Tim, cat Meffan, boho beautiful and am still discovering other channels. I do really well when I have something to follow along instead of just picking them day by day.

I have chronic nerve pain. Would yoga potentially be helpful?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 01:15 PM PDT

I of course plan on speaking to my doctor about some of this, but I'm considering yoga.

I had hernia surgery when I was 17, and now at 38 I've been experiencing nerve pain in that area for the last couple years. I'm taking Lyrica for it and get a nerve block every 6 months. It can be unpredictable when I get flare-ups.

Back in my teens and early 20s, I did Tae Kwon Do and was fairly flexible. Years of an office job have robbed me of that and lately I've been doing some of the stretches I did back then to limber up. My wife has also been doing some very basic stretching/yoga stuff as part of a mindfulness thing.

It's occurred to me that yoga would probably benefit us both in a number of ways, both mentally and physically. But I'm largely hoping it would be potentially beneficial for nerve pain rather than harmful.

Has anyone experienced something similar? What were your results?

can you get skin trauma during yoga?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:22 AM PDT

This is not an ask for medical related help. I am 22M, weight 96kg. I am fat and have underbelly. I never did yoga in my life until last year. I started of slowly and then doing stretching after few days. it got little harder day after day because my joints are not flexible, also i was fat. I did this one thing which will always cause extreme stretching between the joints of my legs(my pubic area). So i did yoga for 1 month straight, never skipping one single day. But after that i stopped doing yoga. After few my months i felt something hard and bumpy on my pubic area near my penis. i went to a doctor later in January 2020, because i was too ashamed to talk about it with my parents. i went to a surgeon, he told me that it was sebaceous cyst( later we found out it was actually epidermoid cyst). I learned from google that sebaceous cyst can occur because of a trauma or injury in that area. So i immediately thought about my yoga last year and doing yoga caused extreme stretching between my legs. Eventually i got a surgery and removed the cyst. Also the surgery caused a lot of problems in that area. And now it has come back again. i am in a lot of pain. I will be going to see the doctor few days later. i didn't ask the doctor about the yoga. Because i thought he might know little about this thing. So there was a no other way of asking anywhere else. I want to know, did doing yoga caused a trauma or injury to me? sorry if the post is a bit NSFW, i didn't know any other ways to say it and also it was bothering me for quite a while. Really need to get it off my head.

Is it bad to bring your own humidity/temperature sensor to hot yoga?

How to start yoga again after an injury?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 02:01 PM PDT

Long story short a frozen pizza fell on my big toe and sprained (and possibly fractured) it, I went to the doctor and since it's been 4 weeks I can give up on the boot but I just want to start yoga again. How do you manage to start yoga at home after an injury? I have one leg bigger than the other and way less strength on the smaller one that was injured.

Bone on bone feeling is hard to get past

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:35 AM PDT

Hey guys! So I've been practicing a lot of arm balances and recently have been getting skeeved out by the feeling of my bones pressing against each other. I have pretty muscular legs from horseback riding, but even trying to do a figure 4 chair and put my palms on the floor, feeling the bone below my knee press on my humerus bone is so freaky. Any tips to get over this? It's not pain it's just mentally been irking me!

Hallux Rigidus and yin yoga toe squats

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 09:53 AM PDT

I just went through a beginner yin yoga routine, and one of the poses that was included was a toe squat. I have osteoarthritis of the big toe joint, otherwise known as hallux rigidus. The pose was very intense. I was able to do it by using my arms to support my bodyweight so that I didn't put my full weight upon the joint.

I couldn't figure out if the pain I felt in the joint was a good pain or a bad pain. Is it something I should lean into, or something I should avoid? In other words, is toe squat pose going to aggravate or ameliorate hallux rigidus over time?

What is the best kind of yoga for scoliosis post operation?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 05:07 AM PDT

I (16F) had a scoliosis surgery a year and a half ago. I can do anything normally, but obviously I can't twist my spine or bend it too far. My doctor said that I can do any kind of sport, as long as it's not extreme. From September, I want to join a yoga class, but I can't decide which type is best for my spine.

I'm looking forward to all kinds of advice!
