Lockdown has unlocked a dark side of my vocabulary and I love it. Posted: 02 Jul 2020 08:38 AM PDT Being able to scream at my screen with my mic is off during yoga classes has improved my practice immensely. The girlfriend and I usually attend a local hot yoga class. Being an inflexible man I never felt like I got really deep in to my stretches due to not being able to moan and groan my way through it. Since lockdown I have been doing zoom yoga. Being able to mute my mic has been a GOD SEND. I can 'ooooooh' and 'aaaaaaah' in pain as much as I like. And even better, I can let out out all the horrible aggressive expletives I want whilst holding long stretches. I'm sure my yoga teacher and her mother are nice people but wow, these last few months I have called her all the four letter swear words I know, plus some made up ones. I feel that I'm normally quite a chill person but it gets dark and dirty during some of the hip openers and I never knew I had it in me. It's the best feeling ever. Has anyone else taken up screaming during lockdown or is this super weird? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Jul 2020 05:34 PM PDT These questions ate primarily for those whose studios are in an area under a mask mandate. . Is your studio open. Are people wearing masks ? Is there entry criteria ? Is there criteria re: whether masks are worn or not ? Any other thoughts on the subject ? [link] [comments] |
Hello all I have started yoga and my height has apparently increased. Posted: 02 Jul 2020 05:00 PM PDT Now before anyone says anything yes I know yoga cannot increase my height. I am 25 nothing except that painful ass surgery that breaks your legs can. I know my posture has significantly improved and that's the sole cause. My question is that before when I used to get my height measured I used to stand as straight as I possibly could, at least for that particular moment. Now I do the same thing, but I am taller. Does that mean that standing as straight as you can isn't "proper posture"? I thought proper posture just meant standing straight and not slouching. Any ideas would be appreciated! I dont know if im doing this right and im kinda scared im going to hurt myself? Any help? Posted: 02 Jul 2020 04:47 PM PDT I know you guys have probably been getting a lot of post like this so 1) sorry and 2) how do I know if I'm hurting my joints? In poses like warrior 1&2 my back foot hurts a good bit, is that ok or are my ankles slowly breaking? And in plank, my hands get really red and I don't want to mess up my wrists! I've looked up guides for specifically how to plant your palms, but it is so much easier said than done for me. Also I don't think I know how to engage my core, and that feels like a pretty important thing! I feel like I'm just constipated and trying to poop really hard... I've been doing yoga for 2 weeks and feel really good, I just don't want to have crippling arthritis at age 30 because I tried to start doing yoga at home. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jul 2020 06:34 AM PDT Hi everyone! I really want to begin doing arm balance poses, but I'm honestly scared and don't really have an idea of how to start. Any beginners poses and tips or advice to practice them would be so helpful and greatly appreciated!! Hope you're all staying safe!! [link] [comments] |
Online resources with Indian instructors? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 09:05 PM PDT Hi! As part of BLM & expanding the voices of POC, are there any resources you've found for online yoga instructors who are ~actually~ Indian? I ask as an Indian American (born there, raise here in the States) that it's really hard to find non-white instructors, and even harder to find popular Indian instructors. I signed up for Yoga International's free trial & am a little bummed that there's not a single Indian instructor & that in general the instructors aren't diverse. Any resources? I'm sorry if this is offensive to anyone, I genuinely don't want it to be. I'd just love to see yoga presented by the people whose culture it originated with! 🕉️ [link] [comments] |
Can yoga be used for strength training? please help Posted: 02 Jul 2020 11:45 AM PDT Hello all, so with the lockdowns going on it has been hard for me to maintain my regular gym routine an without weights at home I've been struggling to find a new routine that works for me. So, I've come to ask you if yoga can be used in place of strength training? My main goals will be to build muscle, increase flexibility, and less importantly burn body fat. If you have any information, suggestions, or resources you can to share I would really appreciate it, thanks! [link] [comments] |
Suggestions for Alo Moves instructors/series/videos?? Posted: 02 Jul 2020 09:40 AM PDT I just joined Alo Moves and really like the website, but am a bit overwhelmed by the choices of series, instructors, etc.! Who are your favourite instructors and what are your favourite series? Any recommendations for someone who is moderately fit (works out 4-5x/week) and not super advanced at yoga? I've looked at the Alo YT videos before joining and quite like Caley Alyssa and wasn't a huge fan of Briohny with her talking (but am willing to give her another shot!). Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jul 2020 02:39 AM PDT Hello fellow yoga people! I'm a beginner to the practice and was hoping for advice on a couple of things as naturally under current circumstances I am practicing from home. I'm finding during a reclined yoga twist (with my right leg straight and my left twisting over bent) I am getting a sharp uncomfortable pain in my groin so wondered if there's anything I need to check in with doing this pose to prevent injury? Or can it be modified? Also I have a very painful ganglion cyst on my left wrist and finding upper body strengthening sequences difficult to do, again is there any advice in terms of modifying these so I'm not bearing any weight on my left wrist? Already tried wedge and blanket with no success. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Yoga Alliance -- What counts for teaching hours? Posted: 02 Jul 2020 08:26 AM PDT I'm currently in a 200hr teacher training program. I'm on the fence about joining Yoga Alliance once I complete the program, as I know there's a list of pros/cons (sounds like more cons) in the teaching community. However, I'm curious about how logging your teaching hours works once you've certified and are working toward E-RYT -- what counts for teaching hours? Do you have to prove employment or business status with another studio or your own? Can volunteer teaching count? Especially given that in the COVID era, it won't be easy to find a studio that wants to hire on more teachers right now... is Yoga Alliance counting streaming classes toward experience, and can you log hours teaching structured classes for free? What do they require as proof, if anything? TIA!! :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jul 2020 06:05 AM PDT I've owned three mats, and I can't stand the way my feet and hands are constantly halfway on/off the mat. I feel like it defeats the purpose, plus it interferes with my progress because it's distracting. I'd like to find a mat that's at least 28" wide, but the choices are slim. Can anyone recommend a good source? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jul 2020 11:19 PM PDT Its hard to be optimistic for good and have faith in things turning out right in this world right now, and I publicly admit that I lack optimism. A lot of bs has happened to me this year (got laid off my job, almost lost my house, my gf broke up with me) and those things have really drained my optimism. I would love to find optimism easier and let it find me easier. Is there any specific poses (physical or mental) that I can do that can help me or guide me in the right path of finding optimism again? [link] [comments] |
Has anyone used Yoga Down Dog app? Posted: 01 Jul 2020 10:43 PM PDT Hey people, I came across a post on this subreddit about Down Dog app and downloaded it but haven't got around to practice with it. I'm in the middle of a 30 day yoga journey with Adriene so i don't wanna mix these 2 up. Have you guys tried it? Should i get their membership since my free trial will be over by the time i'm done with Adriene? What's your experience? Cheers [link] [comments] |
Getting bored with yoga / Falling out of practice Posted: 01 Jul 2020 09:07 PM PDT I first began yoga maybe five years ago and fell out of practice multiple times due to injuries and just plain exhaustion from my daily life I'd rather sleep than yoga. When quarantine began, I restarted my practice after months of not practicing and enjoyed it as it gave me calm. On top of that I have been meditating every day. I have also been doing strength workouts and interval training. I use yoga as cool down or to stretch muscles in my off days. I usually get to do a full flow in my off days and enjoy it but lately I just find it so... boring. I'm not saying yoga isn't challenging for me, because trust me it is. I have very tight hips and depending on the day even lunges can be very difficult. Needless to say, A LOT of poses for me are very challenging. But yoga doesn't give me the "rush" I crave from a workout, the same rush I get from strength workouts or internal training. I have tried more active yoga like power yoga, but still... boredom. Fast paced vinyasa but nothing. Now I know some might say, "You're afraid of stillness, of quiet," but I'm going to say I don't think that's true. I meditate at least twice a day, every single day. I spent time reflecting every single day at night and review what I'm grateful for, and also practice my faith. It's crazy, and I'm not sure many people will understand, but I find that I achieve more mental clarity and even mental stillness in strength workouts. The focus to keep proper form after progressive overload, the rush and excitement of interval training, as well as paying attention to my breathing are what keeps me going. I've found myself replacing my designated yoga days with interval training, or even dance, just because it's so fun! I guess I'm the person who wants to have a little fun in my workout, and I just don't get that from yoga anymore. Has anyone been in the same spot? [link] [comments] |
