Yin Yoga vs arm strength and joints?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 01:08 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,
Very new to doing yoga, and have been doing some gentle Yin Yoga at home (using Youtube - I hope that's not total blasphemy!) to work on my lower back, which is often stiff, sore and inflexible.

In general I like the movements and poses...but there are a couple where I have to wonder if I'm doing it wrong. In puppy pose, for example...am I crazy or am I trying to hold up my upper body with my arms straight out, palms down? I find it very hard on my arms and my shoulder joints, even resting my forehead on a block. And with Thread the Needle, I feel like it puts a ton of pressure on my neck such that I have to support myself with the arm that isn't stretched out on the floor (which, again, is tiring for that arm).

Anyone else experience this and/or am I just doing it wrong? Thank you!

    Anatomy/movement question

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 09:41 AM PDT

So I've noticed something about my body's flexibility and I'm wondering if anyone has any insight. When I'm sitting down with straight legs extended in front of me, I've always been able to flex at the hips much farther if I only have one leg extended and one leg bent, as opposed to both legs extended. I'm assuming this is common but I still wonder - why is this? Does it mean that I'm doing some sort of weird compensation when one leg is bent? Thanks :)

    Meditation light headed

During some of my meditation seasons if I retain the breath for 7 10 seconds I notice I become light headed. Is this normal?

Bent elbow, downward facing dog and pain

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 11:46 AM PDT

Recently I've been feeling pain in my elbows because of downward facing dog. I've been trying to do this pose in the best way possible, following the best tips I can find on the web, but I believe that my true problem is that I was born with a kind of bent elbow and can't make my arms fully straight ( It's an kind of hyperextension and I don't know if there's a name for it).
Does anybody know how can I stop feeling pain?

How to be aware of lower back compression in poses?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 07:37 AM PDT

History: enrolled in a once-a-week yoga course in college that got cut short because COVID, I continued my at-home practice using Yoga w/ Kassandra and Adriene.

I stick to beginner videos and I feel strong in the majority of my poses. When trying poses with back bends, I try really hard to not compress my lower spine but I feel like I don't necessarily know how to focus on that? I feel like I struggle with being aware of the full length of my spine. What am I missing in my practice?

How many hours of yoga do you do a day? And what type of yoga is it?

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 11:10 AM PDT

I'm just wondering, I've been doing 2 hours of power yoga but recently just upped it to 3 hours. I now do 2 hours of power yoga and 1 hour of hatha/gentle yoga.

I'm just wondering about everyone else's type of sessions!

    Yoga and its Benefits

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 12:42 AM PDT

First of all, let us understand that we are not 'supposed' to do yoga. Yoga as some physical exercise and breathing techniques is good for the wellbeing of the body and mind. But true yoga is not about asanas or pranayama, but being in yoga. Yoga is Yuj or union with the Divine. True yoga is living like a yogi, knowing, realizing that we are not this body that will die, we are not the mind that wanders, we are not even the ego that gets agonized - we are the Divine soul. Then uniting the soul within with the supreme consciousness - that is yoga. It is being connected to the network of the Divine, like a SIM card is connected to the satellite. We should be constantly connected to God - that is being in Yoga and that liberates us from all suffering.
