Yoga Book Club! Starting in September. First book- When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chödrön

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 03:36 PM PDT

    Hey all

I made a thread here maybe a month or so ago about a yoga book club. Seems like quite a few people were interested. Emailed the mods and got no response so decided to run with it. First book will be When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chödrön

I plan to make another thread in september with some guided discussion questions, or where we can just share our thoughts on the book. Maybe skype/zoom? if people would prefer live chatting about it.

This thread is more to give people opportunity to get/read the book.

Help with getting into a headstand? I flop back down & I feel like my hips/back are wrongly positioned. If I use a wall, I can get into it and hold it but I want to be able to do it free-standing.

Need some guidance regarding yoga for anxiety.

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 02:14 PM PDT

Hi everyone! Hope everyone is well. I'm a 22 year old female who has been dealing with anxiety for quite a while. I'm in talk therapy, and I've also talked to my MD physician about it. She has done extensive blood work and come to the conclusion that there is nothing physiologically wrong with me. She has recommended yoga and meditation. I told her I already to HIIT workouts every day, and she said that she wants me to specifically incorporate yoga into my daily routine as well. I have done yoga in the past (yoga with Adrienne), but to be honest, I have never felt mentally calm while or after doing it. I feel like I maybe don't know enough about what kind of yoga I should be doing. What do you recommend for stress/anxiety relief? I would prefer specific youtube videos/channels if possible, as I am a bit limited in the budget department haha. Additionally, what time during the day would be best for long term, sustainable mental health benefits? I am not sure whether morning or bed time would be better.

And one last question...I know this is a yoga sub, but if anyone has recommendations for good guided meditations that really help, that would be super helpful too!

    Thanks so much! :)

How to get rubber smell off Manduka EKO?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 06:02 PM PDT

I have sprayed it down countless times with apple cider vinegar/water but it still smells a lot. I have had it a couple weeks and try to keep it unrolled when I can. Anything else I can try?

    Any reviews on decathlon mats?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 07:46 AM PDT

Has anyone ever bought mats from decathlon, if so is there any model you would recommend? I'm stuck at quarantine and they seem to be the only option that delivers fast in my location.

What does your yoga space look like and what is your dream yoga space?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 09:17 AM PDT

I thought it would be fun to see everyone's current yoga space at home and what their dream indoor and outdoor yoga space is and why it is their dream space.

    Heres mine: https://imgur.com/a/26Aopwu

My dream indoor space would have lots of windows and wood floors looking outdoors because I find it to be soothing to be surrounded by nature. My dream outdoor space would be on a dock by the ocean. The sound of the waves is so soothing and rhythmic that it instantly grounds me. My current space is out of necessity in my 650 sq foot apartment.

    Can't breathe using my nose

I can't fully breathe using my nose, so how should I practice yoga breathing? Should I just use mouth breathing instead?

Is cracked skin on your big toes/feet a thing for regular daily practitioners?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 11:42 AM PDT

The skin on both of my big toes has cracked/split a bit... not quite down to raw flesh but pretty close... it seems to be healing fairly well.

It has happened to my partner as well.

Is this a yoga thing or is there something wrong with our feet?

Thinking it's probably from all of the jump backs we've been doing lately? On toes that have otherwise been fairly immobile for the past 30 years?

How many sessions before I can have more flexibility and breathing?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 04:55 AM PDT

I started using the down dog app since last week and slowly easing into it. A couple of flex and breathing questions.

I am only doing 15 min sessions and when the instructor says inhale before she can say exhale I already exhaled. Am I supposed to hold the breathe? And follow along with the breathing instruction?

These is also this this pose of bending down and holding and lift straight up. I see my knees bending quite a lot and can't touch the shins with my head and lift up my back is most likely rounding. How many sessions before I can get more flexibility?

Also, is there is daily questions thread where these beginner type question are more appropriate?

Crow destroys the back of my arms

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 12:28 AM PDT

How do people do this move?! I do it for one second and the back of my arms are on fire from the friction and pure pressure. I have quite squishy arms which I thought would help cushion it.. but apparently not

    Crow feels impossible. Any tips?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2020 06:47 AM PDT

Hi guys! just wanted to hear some input from yogis, maybe you can help me out here.

I've been practicing yoga since January. Used to be quite active (almost everyday), But now my practice has been reduced to about 3 times a week as I've been incorporating strength training into my routine. I have seen it has improved the physical side of my yoga practice, mostly when it comes to stability and endurance, which is amazing.

For some reason though, crow just feels Impossible for me. Even though I know it's my ego talking, I cannot help but feel disappointed and compare myself to others. I feel like everyone can at least hold it for 1-2 seconds except me. It's frustrating because I've seen major improvement in my upper body strength but it seems like it doesn't help at all.

Something I've noticed about my body is that my upper body is larger than my lower body - I have very short legs, while my torso is longer. I've started wondering if this plays a part in my inability to do crow and if my body type hinders my balance in this asana.

I know, ultimately, that this doesn't really matter in my journey with yoga, and that the practice in itself is way more than achieving one asana or another - but it's still something I'd love to accomplish someday, a small side goal in the grand scheme of things.

I've followed all the tips you can think of, even tried the "easy" variations my teacher pointed out, but it just seems like the action of balancing my weight over my arms is just not made for my body haha.

    Thank you in advance!
