Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:19 AM PDT I am in Europe for a year now. I am here as a student and work part-time as a sales person in a bakery. Everyday I meet at alteast 10 racist people who are rude to me just because of my skin/ethnicity. One of our regular customer (also rude with me) told my colleague yesterday that her daughter is a yoga instructor here. Although what I said in my last post holds true as well. What actually made me post it was this incident. I, as an Indian(brown) person am discriminated on a daily basis in a white majority country. People look at me weird if I wear a Bindi (a black/red dot on forehead) or anything slightly related to my culture. But it's super cool when a white person does it. How is that fair? To all the Indians saying that it doesn't matter on that post, yes it doesn't matter to you because you probably didn't go through something similar, but to dismiss what someone else feels is just wrong. To all other people who felt attacked by it. No, I didn't mean to attack anyone. I am really glad that people are learning something from my culture but what I want people to understand is that you just cannot completely forget about its roots and just change it to your taste, especially when it comes from a community that has been suppressed for such a long time and still hasn't recovered from this suppression. It is important that everyone who practices yoga realises that and appreciates it rightly. [link] [comments] |
As an Indian, yoga seems more like a white people's thing to me now. Posted: 24 Aug 2020 10:52 PM PDT This is just my personal opinion. I started yoga few months ago. While before starting I thought I would be more connected to my roots this way, I was really surprised to see the internet filled with just white people doing yoga. The names of asana's that I learned as a child are now all changed to English names. No where, I swear no where do I see any connection to India in Yoga videos on the internet. Personally I don't feel so comfortable with this and maybe I am wrong but yoga has been severly whitewashed for me. [link] [comments] |

What should I do ? Train or stretch ? Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:21 PM PDT So I need a little help from you wonderful people.. I'm a athlete who is always training, primarily mixed martial arts, running and a little bit of weight lifting.. I decided to get into yoga a couple months ago because of my tight hips. After yoga I feel so freakin good, honestly it's amazing. That's why I love it. But my issue is this .. so I'll do my yoga and feel really good, then go back to my running or mma, and I get super tight again. This is hard to explain through text, but it just feels like sometimes training makes me hips worse ? I don't know. It feels like a ever lasting cycle .. I train , I get tight, I do yoga, I get lose , I train , I get tight . [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Aug 2020 10:38 AM PDT Is it possible to self align your body properly (spine, shoulders, hips, etc.) with yoga or can something like that only be done with a chiropractor? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Aug 2020 01:33 PM PDT So I was wondering how y'all remain motivated to continue do yoga. I have this issue with most forms of exercise where I just get bored with it, and low and behold, I'm struggling with yoga as well. To be quite honest, I haven't particularly enjoyed yoga since starting a regular schedule at the beginning of the summer, but it was helping with some aching that I was experiencing, so I continued with it, thinking that enjoyment would come along as I started to get more comfortable with different poses. It hasn't though. Every time my alarm goes off to remind me to do some yoga, I just cringe at the thought. I don't want to lose the progress I've made, but god, I really don't want to do it. Has anyone else experienced this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Aug 2020 09:27 AM PDT Looking for advice for tops for men. Currently I practice in just athletic shorts. Prior to Covid-19 I was doing Bikram and so that was the most comfortable way to do so. I've thought of sharing a few COMP images to get feedback but I'm not very comfortable with the idea of not having a top on. I've tried my regular running tops and other athletic tops but in poses like downward dog or any inversion I end up with the shirt over my head and then I have to come out of the pose so I can see again. Any solutions guys have found around this? [link] [comments] |
I’m having a difficult time building core strength Posted: 25 Aug 2020 12:14 AM PDT I've been doing yoga for about three and a half months. I've definitely gotten more flexible, but I feel like my strength, especially in my core hasn't improved. I find it incredibly difficult to do Chaturanga and haven't seen improvement. I'm a bigger lady and my thighs are huge. I've unconsciously rested my torso on it while doing lunges and I don't know how to not lay on it without curving my back. Any advice on this? Edit: I probably should mention I have scoliosis. This might affect things. [link] [comments] |
Curl toes under and sit back on feet Posted: 25 Aug 2020 11:26 AM PDT I'm a beginner trying to follow a beginner video, she's gone from being on all fours, curling her toes under and then sitting back. I can start to lean back and take my hands off the ground but I'm still Alost 45° from the pose. I can't really figure out what's wrong, I'm a little chubby but nothing excessive, but could it be my calf muscles are in the way or my thighs are too fat? There are about 5 inches between the bottom of my butt cheek and the place where my lower and upper leg stop touching What should I do? [link] [comments] |
Need help with Yoga terminology Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:35 AM PDT Hi, I'm assigned to do live captions today for an intermediate yoga course. My knowledge of yoga is basic. I have yet to hear from the teacher what they're covering. What terms/phrases should I be prepared for? [link] [comments] |

Questions on the relationship between body and mind after yoga asanas Posted: 25 Aug 2020 07:57 AM PDT What I learnt from asana is to relax. Before I know asana, stretching hamstring muscle is almost an impossible task for me. I used to think that stretching ( or to make muscle flexible) is a very difficult task coz I am a low-pain tolerance person. When I start to feel a little tension on hamstring I feel that pain not only on hamstring but in heart also. And then there's a kind of like buzzing feeling in my head trying to stop me from stretching. The harder I avoid giving up, I stretch harder to encounter against the feeling. When I try to stretch harder, the more painful I got. I found it doesn't work. Until I met asana yoga and kind of understanding the philosophy behind, I can do what I can't in my previous life. The feeling was amazing! I can finally unlock some posture! The posture that I can't do previously because I avoid pain, now I can do this by accepting the pain and just keep accepting and focus. Suddenly I realize that all those posture that I can't do, they are all like invisible prisons that limit what I can do. And furthermore, I realize that's a change of a mindset in me. Im feeling like stretching the body actually at the same time making the mind more flexible. Im not sure if it is true. I'm feeling like if one stretch his/her body enough, then he/she may achieve sth new/ tale their life to the next level. And if one has a full flexibility within their body, I don't know what will happen but I'm sure that will be super awesome. Anyone having any thoughts please let me know:) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 25 Aug 2020 08:31 AM PDT Any disc golfing yogis here? What are some poses that have helped your game, whether it be putting or driving or just overall fitness to survive a big course? What are your favorite poses after slinging some discs? Supported fish pose rocks my world after a couple hours of field work. Any recommended poses/stretches for tennis elbow? Any other "aha!" moments you may have experienced while doing yoga? Dancer pose and chair pose always makes me think "Oh! This is good for my putting technique!" [link] [comments] |
