    Yoga and Lifting

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 05:51 PM PDT

Have any fellow yogi's that really want to deepen their practice found that lifting weights (kind of heavy) hinders that ability? I really want to fully immerse myself in my yoga practice, and i feel as though going to the gym tightens my muscles and makes it more difficult for me to open and loosen then up.. but on the other hand i also feel as though lifting will help me in becoming stronger for my practice. Ive also been a gym rat for years before i ever even tried yoga and i always feel like blah when i'm not working out😬 im torn and need opinions.

How to Asana | Learn common yoga poses easily with Misted Forest

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 12:27 PM PDT

Aloha Reddit. I am a yoga instructor and I noticed that the internet doesn't have the best videos for learning the common poses of yoga. So I am starting a series.

    How to Asana

Each video is only 1-3 minutes long teaching you how to do a pose.

    Here are the first three

    Triangle

    Chest Expansion

    Standing Straddle Splits

I would really appreciate any feedback here

and likes/subscribing on my channel and videos directly on YouTube.

New to yoga. To get the most benefit should I rest in between days where I do yoga or should I try and get it in whenever I can? I am trying to improve my overall flexibility

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 08:06 AM PDT

Just wondering if this works like lifting weights whereby you need to have rest days in between sessions to see the best results. If I want to improve my flexibility, does this work the same way or should I try and be as consistent with my practice as possible? Thank you

Hip width apart and underneath the shoulders...

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 11:42 AM PDT

What kind of tricks are they to know that my legs are indeed hip width apart and that my hands are underneath the shoulders? I don't have alignment lines on my mat and my mirror isn't much of a help...

Indian yogi moving to USA - want to understand accessibility & options for holistic / "Indian" yoga practice in America

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 04:27 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

Long time yoga practitioner here - I am Indian by background and have been practicing various forms of yoga (Hatha, Yin, Raja) in the "traditional holistic" way (less pure focus on physical asana, practicing yoga in a way that incorporates pranayama breathing / meditation / philosophical aspects around ego, pratyahara etc).

I'm moving to the US (New York City or SF to be determined) soon and want to keep up my yoga practice - but have read that there are significant differences in the way yoga is practiced in USA versus India.

    Curious to know -

    1. Are there Americans who are interested / engaged in yoga practices that are more indigenous to India, i.e. incorporate the philosophical and spiritual elements of yoga and all 8 facets beyond physical asana?
    2. What are some yoga studios, teachers or yogi communities that fit well into (1)?
    3. In case I can't find offline options, I've also been exploring online and I have noticed that many of the traditional Indian teachers have bad online presence and poor video content - do any other US-based yogis feel that it would be valuable to have accessible content that is more geared towards the holistic traditional practice of yoga?

Just to be clear, I have nothing against yoga teachers or practices in the USA. I follow a lot of them and believe yoga should be accessible to all.

But my personal preference is to continue the practice as I have been for the past 15 years and want to understand American yogis' views on the above and connect with like-minded folks :)

    Strange pyrography question...

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 11:44 AM PDT

I got a nice plain cork mat and I was wondering whether I can perform pyrography on it, not something too extensive. Just something small in the middle of my mat to make it more beautiful and keep me aligned. Would that destroy my mat? Has anyone ever tried it? 😋

Fellow yoga teachers on this sub, how are you affording additional teacher traînings?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 01:06 AM PDT

If you don't mind me asking. I've been teaching for 3 and a half years and have been wanting to up my teaching level to 500 hours, but my god. YTTs are so expensive! Even the online ones. You're looking at £3500+ for a 300H training, and £4500+ for 300H trainings with renowned teachers (not even including accommodation or travel). Added to that the fact that 300H trainings involve taking at least a month and a half off teaching – that's another £3000 or so. In all seriousness, I've crunched the numbers, who is affording this?!?

Also if anyone has recommendations for reputable online 300H trainings that won't break the bank, I am all ears. Thanks!

    Edit: typo

Yoga butt (high hamstring Tendinopathy/ tendinitis relief suggestions?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 07:56 AM PDT

Well it happened. After months of lockdown I was finally able to get back to my favorite studio for my beloved hot vinyasa classes. I started out slow (two classes per week) for a few weeks then added a third class. After two weeks of 3x/week I was hit with yoga butt-specifically in my left leg. It's not extremely painful but I'm aware it's there and stretching makes it worse. I've already cut out the third class as well as any other exercise and I've stopped actively stretching my hamstrings.

Any suggestions on how I can get my hamstring to heal faster so I can get back on the mat? Thank you fellow yogis!

Just as a side note and to give some background before the lockdown I was doing 2-3 hot vinyasa classes/week plus core work 1x/week. I'm 36 and have been actively practicing 6 years and I've always been active and exercised my entire teens and adult life.

Tips to get a 13 y/o started on yoga?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 11:20 PM PDT

I want to get my 13 y/o into yoga. I'm only just a beginner myself having only started in June doing mostly Yoga with Adrienne on YT. I love how yoga has made me feel & the changes it's bringing to my body so I thought I'd do it with my daughter too. I thought I'd ask this community for some thoughts and tips ie:

    1. Is it alright to start doing yoga at 13?
    2. If you've had experiences in starting yoga around that age (or know of someone who did), how did you/they get started? Should I look into foundation vids first?
    3. Can you recommend online resources that may be suitable for her considering her age?
    4. Anything particular I should look out for? Like Do's and Don't's kinda?

Some more info about us that might help:

    1. My daughter and I are currently in two different countries so we'd be doing our workouts via Zoom. Aside from current quarantine measures, our distance makes the possibility of enrolling her in a yoga class where she may be better taught/assisted by an instructor a little tricky.

    2. She isn't an active child and more so with being quarantined since March.

Mods, I'm unsure if this Q is allowed but feel free to take it down if it isn't. Or please redirect me to a previous thread if this has been discussed before? Thanks!

    Boat pose alternative stretches?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 09:33 PM PDT

I'm on day 3 of doing yoga, but while I do my best to stumble through Adriene's 30 day challenge the boat pose I physically can't do, as it causes some very harsh pain (medical reason) is there a stretch I can replace it with for the same work out?

Need advice. I originally wanted to get high once a week with cannabis sativa using actual herb. I ended up taking a edible and then after a few days a vape pen. This destroyed my original plan to lower my tolerance. I been working out and sweating profoundly with yoga. Am I in the wrong?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 02:47 PM PDT

I do yoga like its my daily bread. I just wanted to unwind once a week the right way. I am such a dumb ass for not doing this from the get go. By that I mean not taking any concentrate when my tolerance was already lowered. It has been a week already since my last use. Can I get advice? I do not use bongs or smoke it. I use a small device that holds around .1 grams so you can imagine how its essentially a micro doser. I have a lot on my plate;however, I get what I have to get started and done.
