Is mindfulness supposed to help with this? Is this a great opportunity to meditate? Or should I just continue crying hysterically?

I think I'm seeing results after only 7 days of meditation?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 06:33 PM PDT

So I've been meditating on and off for years. I've always felt super bad at it. My mind is always running and I can't spend probably even 10 seconds without getting swept up in thought. But recently, I found the Waking Up app, which I really like because I can't just get lost in thought within 10 seconds like I normally do, because he interrupts your thoughts and talks to you with lot's of ideas to stay present. I've really appreciated how he's helped me focus on the things around me and to really notice them fully, I feel like it's been a big shift for me in my meditation journey. It's really helped me a lot with not getting stuck in thought too long.

Anyway, after doing this for 7 days in a row (which feels like definitely not enough time to see results) today I noticed the same person bothering me at work like they normally do with the exact same annoying behavior they perform, but instead of it ruining my evening (it ruined like an hour of my life at work), I noticed that within a half an hour of work ending it had completely vanished from my mind. I made dinner and watched a show and then realized, holy shit, I'm feeling completely relaxed right now. That coworker totally didn't affect me as much as it normally does. I can't know for sure if this is from meditating, but I feel like there's a real possibility it could be at least partially due to meditation.

fasting is the meditation of the body... maybe?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 11:44 PM PDT

I was drawn to make a channel about spirituality but it failed. No one cared about what I had to say. But then I started a channel about fasting and today I was drawn to give my thoughts on fasting and spirituality. Check it out if it resonates with you!

A little back story, last night I had a sort of mental/emotional/spiritual crisis and I broke my fast for that reason, which I am documenting on my channel.

How to get instant results from meditation

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 07:36 PM PDT

Meditation is super simple. You are just manipulating your attention.

Have you ever focused your attention on something? Like when you are studying. Or when you are playing a videogame. Or when you are listening carefully to understand the lyrics of a song.

    Of course you have.

And when you focus your attention like that, studying goes better. And you play the videogame better. And you understand the lyrics of the song better.

Congratulations! You just got instant results by doing a meditation type thing.

And if you do it more. If you keep focusing. If you focus deeper. You will get more results. More understanding. Deeper hearing. More skillful doing.

    So there you go. Results!

    But wait, there's more!

We also have another TOTALLY DIFFERENT thing that you can do with your attention too. A totally different meditation technique.

And that delivers results too. But different. It's different from focus.

    How Ajahn Brahm overcame restlessness

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 09:05 PM PDT

"I like telling the story. 5 years as a monk I was and I found this most beautiful place. I was with my teacher, Ajahn Chah, I was in the next best scene, in a chai plantation, in a tea plantation in the North of Thailand. There's as much tea as you could drink. This was angmo haven. [laughs] Angmo means white monk or actually red hair. But anyway, so there I was, at a beautiful monastery with caves, I love caves. There was a batcave. And I must say, because there's lots of bats in the cave. They always, when they fly out, that's when they do their business.Because when they hang upside down, you can't poo when you're hanging upside down. [laughter]So they have to wait until they fly. [laughter] You try it. [laughter] And so just outside the cave, it was just incredibly rich soil.I always remember this papaya tree outside and that was the most delicious papaya I've ever ever eaten in my whole life. Nothing ever matched that.

I was by myself, nothing to do but meditate all day,I started getting restless. I know what it's like when the thoughts take over your mind, you can't stop them. And it would be okay if there are thoughts are about the high dhamma, about the meaning of dependent origination,or something useful. But you know what I was thinking about? Old girl friends, I wonder where she is now, [laughs] sex, maybe I'm still young enough, maybe still someone might have me, romance and all those, but I was a monk, Stop it! I love being a monk, I always did. But these thoughts kept coming into your mind, what I call unmonkish thoughts. And the more I tried to stop them, the more they came in. It was driving me crazy. The thing was I never had anyone to talk to, cos I was in solitude by myself. And so one day, it got so bad, I remember this, the only thing I could do was, there was a big Buddha statue in the hall and I bowed to that and I just said, "Help". I was really going crazy. And then the idea came to me, that is not supernatural, which is sometimes when you ask someone else you can get an answer for yourself. And the answer came, why don't I do a deal. If you really have to think about all those unmonkish thoughts, I was going to give myself a time,3 to 4 pm every the afternoon. I can have my thinking, anything goes and I won't try to stop it at all. Even the weirdest sexual fantasies, I'll accept you from 3 to 4, the rest of the day you behave. Fair enough. You know, just make a deal. Of course it never worked as I expected it. Until 3 o'clock the mind was still as crazy as ever, going all over the place, thinking about this girl, that girl, oh, goodness knows what else. By the time it got to 3 o'clock, you know what it's like when you are restless, you get so exhausted and tired. So at 3 o'clock, I went up to my room, I leant against the wall, put my feet, they were aching, said, "Ok, now,I'm not going to fight you anymore. Whatever thought comes into the mind, the weirdest sexual fantasy, girlfriend, sex, anything, come in." And for the next hour, I watched every breath without missing one, it was so peaceful, the calmest hour I had in months [chuckle]. And that really shook me, I was trying to fight those thoughts out and they just kept going stronger. When I said, "Ok,you can come in, do whatever you want." I was so calm and peaceful, there's not a thought came into my mind for an hour. You understand why? I did, after that experience. When I was trying to stop those thoughts, I was feeding them, I was giving them energy. But as soon as I said, "ah let go, the door of my heart is open to you, any thought can come in, whatever it is. Come." Nothing came. [laughter] That is how you break that hindrance."

    Newcomer here, got some questions!

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 01:36 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I discovered this sub about 10 minutes ago and I have some questions. I come from r/NoFap. I've been trying to get myself under control for a while, it's going pretty good! One of the things that's often mentioned in that sub is meditation. I saw someone mention the 6 phase meditation by Vishen Lakhiani and I've been listening to that one for about a week. I have seen some videos by Dr. K (HealthyGamerGG) where he does some form of guided meditation: alternate nose breathing and listening to oscillations from some kind of instrument (this last one was really interesting, I'd love to try more of this)

So my question: What's the best way to start meditating? I have very little experience. I heard dr. K say there are 120+ different meditation techniques and right now I have no strategy when it comes to meditation, I just pick random audios. Thanks in advance!

Is Mindfulness an "advanced" and therefore "risky" meditation technique? Most Eastern traditions teach mindfulness or similar to adepts while novices start by chanting mantras, sutras, performing physical qigong

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 09:10 PM PDT

Buddhist novices chant the sutra and sometimes basic qigong like Eight Brocades. Mindfulness and breath techniques like tummo are taught to advanced students and adepts.

Hindu-based traditions start with pooja (temple worship) and chanting mantras, maybe physical hatha yoga. Again, breath techniques like ajapa-japa are only taught to adepts.

Sufis practice start with simple dhikr (analogous to mantra. Not exactly the same, but a one sentence comparison), and acts of devotion. Breath techniques like "pas-anfas" and "habs-e-damm" are taught only to adepts.

They all emphasize that the breath-techniques are "advanced" and can be "dangerous".

I heard of Mindfulness back in the 1990s but put off practicing Mindfulness, after doing some background reading and noting that all the Eastern traditions regard it as "advanced" and not for novices. They all seem to concur, and I respected that.

Only six months ago under lockdown did I dare to even start!

    So my questions:

1: Why are breath techniques thought of as "advanced" and "risky"?

2: Are we wise to popularize this thing?

Going through a tough time and handling it better since meditating

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 12:41 AM PDT

I started meditating a few months ago but have been doing it every morning for an hour this past few weeks. I now have some family issues going on and normally it would drain me and I would have a hard time sleeping and focusing. It's still tiring but I have kept up with meditating and use it as time to remind myself that my life is good even when other people's chaos gets in the way. It feels a bit like a sanctuary that is just for me.

I have been better able to stay focused on school, I went for a run today, and overall feel like the stress is not sucking me in. I'm so grateful to be able to stay grounded right now

    Metta Journey

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 10:16 PM PDT

I had such an empty feeling when I first started compassion meditation and shame for not being good at it. Now I almost get high off of it and feel so much love. It took a few weeks, but I wonder what it will be like in a few more weeks - Will I be completely embracing love throughout my day? I am excited to see and feel the difference. I feel almost like a kid again when I do it. I get flashbacks from happy childhood memories. And I do feel lots of actual sensation in my heart - Is this Oxytocin perhaps?

Almost got 100 meditation sessions !

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 11:15 PM PDT

Next session will be my 100th :)

    https://gyazo.com/7d42501a48a78a8ef67bb19e5c62a141

I've been very consistent with it, despite my running streak being just six days in a row I've been pretty much consistent for the entirety of those 100 days, but due to my sleeping schedule it passes midnight before I get my meditation in.

Other than that I've noticed something interesting. I just finished my meditation for today and it left me feeling quite depressed. I wouldn't say that it's a negative, it somehow exposes what's lacking in my life and it gives me purpose in what I need to do to fix those issues. Does anyone else have experience with this, thoughts ?

Edit: There's also something beautiful about experiencing all the emotions we're supposed to feel. This is something you get to learn if you experience the real pain of being stuck in a state of numbness. The state of numbness is usually just a complete lack of the emotional spectrum with an underlying feeling of slight panic.

Just a haiku that happened during today's practice.

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 02:11 PM PDT

I have been an on and off meditator for the last few years. While I understand the positive benefits and have experienced them, sometimes I drift away. Today I'm proud of myself because I sat to meditate for the first time in a while. While breathing a little haiku popped into my head and I wanted to share:

    .

    I am alive as

    A miracle of nature

    As is everything

    .

    Have a pleasant day :)

How to introduce meditation to skeptical family

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 10:41 PM PDT

Hey, I'm new here, seems like a cool place. I'm just getting back into meditation after doing it on and off for years. So far I'm finding it beneficial and I feel committed to deepening my practice.

The more I do my practice and learn about meditation, the more I realize how hugely beneficial meditation would be for my parents. They're both stressed out with chronic health problems, and my dad is highly ego-driven.

They know I'm meditating daily, and I've tried to gently explain how beneficial it's been for me. But they also know I'm still working out my own life problems so in a way I'm maybe not the greatest advertisement for meditation.

They haven't said anything explicitly to me yet, but I know my parents well enough to know they think meditation is a bunch of hippy bullshit. Also, my mom is extremely Christian and she definitely would be turned off by meditation's association with Eastern religion (even though obviously it doesn't need to be). Even if I could get them to try it a few times, it seems unlikely they would become sufficiently self-motivated to start practicing in earnest. It's frustrating for me to know that I'm aware of a practice that could hugely benefit their lives, but I just can't figure out how to convince them that meditation is not at all what I suspect they think it is.

My question is: has anyone had success getting friends/family to give meditation an honest try, when they were initially skeptical and close-minded about it? What was your approach?

Note: my parents don't read books (except for Bible study), so all of the great books out there on meditation are useless here.

    Tried meditation twice a day.

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 02:05 PM PDT

So I researched a lot before doing it. It was October 20th 2020 when I subscribed for Headspace and gave it a go. I came back from work feeling really tired but couldn't sleep. My room was a mess. Dirty, clothes everywhere, no bed frame, sleeping on a mattress on the floor even though I had a beautiful room with bed frame in it. Things everywhere. It was 1am when I meditated for about 20 minutes and I felt like Bradley Cooper from limitless. I cleaned my room, kitchen and then took a shower. Basically revamped the whole vibe of my room. Then I made some food for myself (most of the nights I sleep drunk or hungry or both). This night was different. I slept like a new born baby. I woke up feeling better than ever. Now I feel better, happy, more relaxed, more organized, more calm, less angry.

Calm and Headspace Lifetime discount on a budget?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 01:22 AM PDT

I am a mature university student of very fixed means but I value meditation and my most recent Calm and Headspace annual subscriptions have expired which in the past I used every morning. When I have checked in the past student discounts do not apply here in the Republic of Ireland.

Calm lifetime is available right now advertised as discounted by 60% for $160 and I am tempted to jump unless there is a chance of further reductions on Black Friday? I would be absolutely kicking myself if the discount ends while I am waiting but perhaps this is something they run regularly?

On searching today it seems that Headspace no longer offer a lifetime subscription! Apparently the discount code LIFETIME allowed this for some time but that no longer works. Does anyone know if it is likely to be reintroduced?

My best option may be to set up a Google search alert for Headspace Lifetime in case they bring it back and otherwise just stop using it.

    Started meditating again

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 12:31 AM PDT

I just started meditating again yesterday after going on and off for a while. Does anyone have advice for how to make it a habit so I won't only do it for a week or two this time. Also currently I am only focusing on my breathing for the whole ten minutes and that's it. Are there any other tricks to it, or am I doing this correctly?

I have tried different meditation apps and have a really hard time getting in the habit of it. I live in Dallas, Texas. Looking for a good meditation retreat. Please if anyone can help.

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 08:28 PM PDT

I will be off from 12/21/2020-1/1/2021. Are there any meditation retreats that I could drive to and that would be open during thus time? Also, any you can recommend that really made a difference. I would get covid tested before going there and quarantine. I am an atheist so would prefer non religious and more more focused on the practice. I cant see family right now since they are out of state and international so don't want to risk flying and getting anyone sick. So thought it might be a good time to really learn how to successfully meditate.

    DAE cry when they meditate?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 06:17 PM PDT

Whenever I take a break (aka lose consistency) from mediation practice (1-3 months), during my returning practice I cry. I don't fight it, I just let myself sob and it feels so good. It feels like this major release of anxiety and overwhelming feeling of relief, like I've been high strung for months and I'm finally allowing myself a break and to center myself. I suppose of course that's what meditation is all about, but I don't hear often about people crying.

This probably screams "I need to see a therapist" (this is know), but I'd be interested to hear if anyone shares this feeling.

Why doesn't meditation help me anymore?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 09:27 PM PDT

    Hello,

I meditate so I can stay calm, i have MPD, BPD , high anxiety and PTSD. I used to meditate all the time but after one event, i haven't been able to go back.

All i remember is that the meditation i went into was so deep, that i literally figured out the meaning of everything, and how it is connected. And after the meditation, nothing has been the same with me mentally. I look at everything as connected, and it stresses me out.

I love meditation, im currently using it to accomplish all my chakras but i can't ever get deep enough again like i was the last time, please help
