A few questions as I just started my ashtanga journey! Posted: 09 Nov 2020 04:27 AM PST Good morning everyone! Hope you are having a lovely start to the week. I started my ashtanga journey just 10 days ago as I wanted to first go to a shala and get a teacher to start a mysore program and do it properly (even though it closed down two days later due to lockdown in France). I have been keeping up with classes on zoom with my teacher and so far so good. To put a bit of background I am 23, male and the last 6 months I was doing only vinyasa classes online due to covid (weightlifting obsessed for many years before it) and stuff but I feel like nothing feels as deepening spiritually as I have been feeling with ashtanga; also never feel as open during the day when doing vinyasa style classes compared to now doing ashtanga. Up until now I have been doing up to Marichyasana A, then doing a few extra stretching posses my teacher recommended me to open up the hips more; and finishing off with urdhva dhanurasana, paschimottanasana, sarvangasana, halasana, karnapidasana, matsyasana, uttana padasana, sirsana, yoga mudra, padmasana, utpluthih and finally savasana. The few questions I have are the following: As up until now the whole practice only takes me around 1h and I feel like I could have another go at it maybe in the afternoon without pushing the forward folds as deeply as I do in the morning; would that be recommended? Because I come from a background of heavy weightlifting I am very aware of when I am burning out and when I am not so I could just back off if I saw that´s the case. Second question is my left knee started hurting from the first days, it´s like a weird pain when I bend it as if it was going to pop but I actually cannot make it do it somehow (really bothers me in trianga mukhaikapada paschimottanasana, any way to modify??) and was wondering what I could do for the pain? I have been doing a few moxatherapies myself at home but as it is a feeling of it not being able to pop I dont seem to be able to solve it. Last question is do you need to make the inhale/exhale as long as the movement? I feel like I have a really long breath, specially at the start of my practice and for example in chaturanga I cannot go any slower and happen to just stop and hold it down until I have finished my exhale (another example is when coming into urdhva mukha svanasana from this). Thank you so much everyone and hope you are all safe and sound! Have a lovely week! Daniel [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Nov 2020 02:05 AM PST Hiya I have a long term issue with my right wrist which i suspect is tendonitis somewhere around the heel of my thumb. I think it comes from cycling and not from yoga, but is anyone aware of any common vinyasa mistakes which might be causing it? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Pain above knee joint Surya namaskar a and b Posted: 09 Nov 2020 02:08 AM PST I just about managed to get through 5 a and 1 b and the day after I tend to have a dull achy pain above a knee joint. From a some tentative Googling it seems like it might be helpful to stretch my quad before practice. Is there a position in Surya namaskar that should be stretching my quads and I'm not doing it right or is there another position I can add in in to Surya namaskar a to my quads? [link] [comments]
